I hadn’t traveled much since my kid one, so I never bothered doing it. I had it on my list of perpetual todos, and this was more of a “hey it’s great if you can come, but if not it’s fine”

Yeah the only reason I have one reliably is because my wife’s family lives in Canada. And we usually drive so I could technically get away with the little ID card. For a lot of people (maybe a large majority) in the States international travel is a very rare thing that you can usually plan well ahead for and there’s no need to have a passport at all much less always be aware that it’s up to date. Even for me we only go to Canada every couple of years so we always have to double check for ourselves, it’s not on a reminder.

Of course now a I have a job where I will travel internationally once a year reliably so that changes for me and why I found this thread.

My second US one just expired, and I can't have two without a valid reason. The expired one contains a Brazil visa that is valid for longer than the passport's term. Huge pain in the rear end.

Welp, the cheapest alternative flight option is $804 more which I know my job won’t approve. So I guess I’m just gonna be prepared to dash through MSP. And maybe be prepared for my checked bag to not make it with me…

This will be my first time checking a bag in like, 13 years, but can’t really be helped for this trip.

Mine is 2026... guess I should start planning in 2025?

Got approval to book D1 for my travel this weekend -- hooray! Two of our execs got 360 it turns out...

before the expense report permissions got fixed, everyone's was visible -- turns out they were booking full-fare D1 the entirety of 2022 and cross-approving each other's policy exceptions. They tell everyone 'they get upgraded' :wtc:

It is a pain in the rear end, I just pay the cost for someone to help with it and eat it as a cost of doing business.

What was their spend?

With my experience with CK it’s less about my personal spend and how much spend I can direct for others that got it.

Probably around $60K I would guess. I suspect Delta's algorithm also factors in job titles (via LinkedIn) and makes a reasonable assumption that the company spend is controlled by them (we actually have no specific airline policy requirement...).

I managed to get a passport in 5 hours. Flew to MSP and went to the passport office with all my info and paperwork, later that day I made my flight to Toronto. I think this was in 2017.

This is so bizarre, because I had just about the opposite experience and I was terrified of not being able to get an appointment based on the same basic posts that you saw. To be fair I had 2 weeks until my flight, not 48 hours, but right at day 14 I woke up at 5, called, waited 2 minutes on hold and got a California appointment for this week.

Best of luck getting one.

That’s awesome. Your specific strategy is the optimal one. Any deviations lead to sadness.

Ended up missing my flight due to no passport but it came the afternoon of my original flight. Booked a direct flight the next day to a small Mexican beachside resort and missed the ceremony but made the reception!

I usually renew early but I blame pandemic.

The best you could have gotten given the hand you had.

I'm hopeful that I can get it that day, rather than having to come back, because it's just far enough to be inconvenient.

Transfers within have always been smooth for me; worst I’ve dealt with is security re-screening from JNB-AMS. About 45 minutes to get through that…

Exit immigration from EU can be really long for non EU citizens. Or if arriving from 'non clean' airports like movax mentioned, transfer security can also be backed up.

There's still staffing/labor issues at AMS and the afternoon bank of departures can make the airport overcrowded as well.

Today has been a DAY

Huge transportation strikes in Paris meant a bunch of scrambling of actually figuring out how to even get to CDG. Then at CDG the air traffic controllers are also striking so our flight got out late… then at LHR they weren’t ready for us so we sat on the tarmac for awhile. We’re now 40m behind.

And after taking a bus to the right terminal, though I definitely, visibly could make it through the security line to get to my conx they wouldn’t let me or escort me (or the 10 other people on the same flight to ORD). BA rebooked me through Dulles with another extremely tight 2hr connection and a carrier change to United and it was supposed to take off 26 minutes ago but I think we are missing some crew and maybe catering?

Odds are NOT looking good that I’m making it back to Chicago tonight, or maybe ever at this rate.

Edit: BA’s technology is horrible, I really am spoiled with AA.

Also I had to call united while standing in front of the ba desk so the united agent could then call a ba agent with instructions to add my ktn so I could actually get precheck on the off chance I can recheck my bag fast enough to sprint through security. Complete shitshow

First world "problem" (not really...) -- last minute equipment change on AMS-NRT from 789 to 773 -- I had sworn I had an aisle with 6C w/ no neighbor... but the 773 is 2-2-2. Hopefully the window guy doesn't have to get up often. Was looking forward to seeing what the KLM Dreamliner product was like -- no real complaints about the seats on the 777 (have taken it AMS-JNB a few times) but I like checking out new stuff.

I am reminded of why I hate AA today. Had a confirmed business class ticket and had to standby for an earlier flight. I had to be on this particular flight to make it in time for an appointment.

The flight was full, cleared me into a middle seat in economy, I boarded, and there were two no-shows in business. The empty seats goes to the free upgrade list instead of me, revenue confirmed standing by for an earlier flight.

Am I supposed to just loiter at the gate and be the last one to board so things are done properly with AA?

I did! They said "First is full (gently caress off)" so I just boarded.

Then while on board there were no shows and they upgraded people from the list. I suspect I was incorrectly listed as revenue standby for Economy and not Business.

When I've called Delta asking if I can get on an earlier flight they managed to keep my upgrade more than once. Then there's my flight home out of ABE last week where comfort+ was almost empty and the GA didn't upgrade anybody.

You'd think that if someone paid for the ticket they'd be put at the top of the list for the class they paid for.

I had a last minute work trip come up (traveling without clients) and just booked a couple of 1 way tickets direct to Haneda in JL F for 80k miles each and return on SQ J for $3700.

Previously had no cash availability inbound to HND on OneWorld and round trips were starting at 8k for D1 or United Polaris and 10k for SQ.

As much as it pains me to not throw the money at OW, I love booking a real F ticket for less miles than the economy in any amount of connections. The 2 week release of JL award space is real
