This is straight up Ukranian propaganda. More neutral estimates have total casualties (wounded and killed) at 200k, not 600k. Versus 120k Ukrainian casualties.

These numbers have been more in line with realistic estimates.

The ones posted above look like if you take everyone elses estimated russian losses (150k ish total) and incorrectly assumed that meant 150k dead and did the quick maths guesstimating hundreds of thousands of wounded/missing/captured on top of that.

On Norwegian TV on Jan. 22, Gen. Eirik Kristoffersen, Norway’s defense chief, said estimates were that Russia had suffered 180,000 dead and wounded, while Ukraine had 100,000 killed or wounded in action along with 30,000 civilian deaths. General Kristoffersen, in an email to The New York Times through his spokesman, said that there is “much uncertainty regarding these numbers, as no one at the moment are able to give a good overview. They could be both lower or even higher.”

Senior U.S. officials said this week that they believe the number for Russia is closer to 200,000.

Britain's defense ministry shared in a Friday intelligence update that Russian forces have likely suffered between 175,000 and 200,000 causalities on the battlefield.

It added that the rate of this carnage has "significantly increased" since late-September 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the partial military mobilization and drafted hundreds of thousands of reservists to be sent into Ukraine. Many of these freshly mobilized troops were sent to Ukraine with poorly equipped and with limited training.

Britain's defense ministry said that between 40,000 and 60,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the fighting. The ministry noted that the death toll represents "a high ratio of personnel killed compared to those wounded" by the standards of modern warfare.

According to CSIS estimates, there have been approximately 60,000 to 70,000 Russian combat fatalities in Ukraine between February 2022 and February 2023. These estimates include regular Russian soldiers from the Russian armed forces, Rosgvardiya, Federal Security Service, and Federal Guard Service; fighters from pro-Russian militias, such as the Donetsk People’s Militia and Luhansk People’s Militia; and contractors from such private military companies as the Wagner Group. Overall, Russia has suffered roughly 200,000 to 250,000 total casualties—personnel wounded, killed, and missing—during the first year of the war. These casualty estimates also include regular Russian soldiers, militia fighters, and private contractors from the Wagner Group.

I think they're taking Ukraine's claimed kills (which are that high), and just multiplying it by three for the wounded number. The other figures on destroyed equipment seem to just be the daily figure Ukraine puts out there.

Fuck it.
When I play WarCraft or any other RTS style game, I always move my units into bad positions, fail to diversify my unit production, neglect resource gathering, and generally get my rear end handed to me even by the computer on easy mode.

Russia is worse than me at strategy and war planning. If I didn't grow up fearing Russia, I would be laughing hysterically.

No I understand the default idea is a peace agreement is genuinely preferable. The pointless dying stops. But Russian elites literally openly say that the only way to solve this problem is through military means. Outright. So unless you have the opinion that Russia should just get everything it wants, the only rational and ethical thing left to do as a westerner is to support Ukraine financially and militarily.

Yet somehow this opinion makes me a bloodthirsty banderite.

Even if someone hadn't worked it out beforehand or from his long rambling invasion speech, when Russian media accidentally published Putin's 'I'm doing this because I am Peter the Great reborn, the Ukrainian state is an accident and I'm going to destroy it for the dream of the Greater Russian empire' manifesto that should have been enough for any reasonable bystander to work out there wasn't really a reasonably way of just giving Russia what it wants for peace.

Mick Ryan with a new thread on the present battlefield situation, and who currently possesses battlefield initiative. At present, neither side possesses actual battlefield initiative, only marginal gains and minimal momentum for outsize losses on the part of Russia against Ukrainian defenses, whose losses, while heavy now, are still bearable. What happens in the spring and summer will probably decide the further course of the war.

In Indonesia’s most popular destination, the arrivals are finding refuge from the economic fallout of the war and the threat of conscription.

They are also meeting a backlash from locals angry about what they see as the growing problem of outsiders taking their jobs.

Earlier this week, Bali Governor Wayan Koster said he had asked the central government in Jakarta to end visa-on-arrival privileges for citizens of Russia and Ukraine amid growing complaints from locals.

“Why these two countries? These two are at war, so it is unsafe in their country, and they flock to Bali. Many of them come to Bali, not for leisure, but to find comfort, including for work,” Koster was quoted as saying in local media.

Minister of Tourism Sandiaga Uno said he would review the governor’s request while leaving open the possibility that the number of those “acting up and causing problems” may not be significant.

While nearly 60,000 Russians arrived in Bali last year, roughly 20,000 have been arriving each month since the Kremlin declared a partial mobilisation of military reservists in September, according to figures compiled by Bali’s international airport.
