Pablo Bluth posted:There was recently a BBC documentary series following the Royal Navy aircraft carrier during a joint NATO deployment, and included a period in the black sea (this was 2021 I think). One Royal Navy ship intentionally passed through Crimean waters and it got pretty spicey with Russia harassing the fleet in return. Worth tracking down a copy. I'll track it down but i want to make a shout out to the 70s Sailor series about the Arc Royal because it's fantastic watching featuring a salty as gently caress old chief telling a youngster "one of the facts of life me old son, you drink a man's drink and you act like a man" Hell yes awesome snype

Officer asks his NCO what it is, guy takes a sips and grimaces, and responds with something like "bad whiskey is better than no whiskey". So the officer tells them to "get rid of it". NCO turns to the rest of the soldiers and states "alright lads, this is a man's work" and starts drinking the awful stuff. I don't remember the movie but I remember the scene.

Charlz Guybon posted:There was a lot of revisionism of the Red Army performance in WWII after the Berlin Wall came down (and I think most historians bought into it to some extant. After all, much of the historiography of the war had been written by rear end covering German generals to make themselves look good.) I wonder if this performance is going to have that looked at more skeptically and pushed back on? Probably not. The Red Army in WWII was far, far more fundamentally competent than this after the first few months of 1941.

Series opens with a lot of very drunk sailors returning to ship and getting written up. Also there is I think some nudity in part of the 1st episode so be aware if you are at work.

It's a bit hit and miss because it focusses too much on the lives of a few sailors, but enough interesting stuff on the operations manages to squeeze in. It was also being filmed when they had the f35 mishap. Sailor was a BBC documentary on HMS Ark Royal 1973-77, The Warship: Tour of Duty was decades later.

psydude posted:Not trying to start an argument here, but how does one reconcile this viewpoint with the 26 million dead? 2. A lot of soldiers died as prisoners of war. 3. Germany also lost a huge amount of soldiers - the scale of the war was very different. 4. An astounding number of soldiers died in the first few months. 5. Soviet leadership generally tried to hold to a high intensity of warfare. This meant for example that a successful advantance would be pushed as far as it could go. Unfortunately, this lead to over extensions that were then often punished severely. Also, they would try to force breaks in the German defensive lines. If they underestimated the defense or overestimated their own position this lead to horrendously high casualties in failed offensives (see Zhukov's Greatest Defeat: The Red Army's Epic Disaster in Operation Mars, 1942).

Being practiced at piecing together what has happened is very different from predicting what will happen or even really understanding the current situation. Skepticism is fair. He was wrong early on about how poorly Russia would perform and how well Ukraine would stand up. But outside of that, imo he's been one of the most keyed-in and consistently correct analysts, and I think he does a pretty good job to clearly state his uncertainties and separate his guesses from facts. He does tend to make a pointed effort to tamp down excessive optimism or unrealistic expectations which maybe comes across as hot-take-esque, but I think that's an honest position for him (and might be pretty ingrained in his psyche from having been born in the Ukraine SSR late in the cold war).

https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-...ign=position_01 WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s president said Thursday that his country plans to give Ukraine around a dozen MiG-29 fighter jets, which would make it the first NATO member to fulfill the Ukrainian government’s increasingly urgent requests for warplanes. President Andrzej Duda said Poland would hand over four of the Soviet-made warplanes “within the next few days” and that the rest needed servicing and would be supplied later. The Polish word he used to describe the total number can mean between 11 and 19. “They are in the last years of their functioning, but they are in good working condition,” Duda said of the aircraft. He did not say whether other countries would follow suit, although Slovakia has said it would send its disused MiGs to Ukraine. Poland also was the first NATO nation to provide Ukraine with German-made Leopard 2 tanks. On Wednesday, Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller said some other countries also had pledged MiGs to Kyiv, but he did not name them. Both Poland and Slovakia had indicated they were ready to hand over their planes, but only as part of a wider international coalition doing the same.
