Huh. Would there be enough of a charge to actually kill someone? I guess you could switch the...body (?) out with some metal or something, hope for shrapnel.

I mean it might blow off a finger or two, possible mess up the computer a bit depending on where the components are? I think more it's just meant for intimidation not something meant to kill. USB are just so small and light, to fit in the charge and what ever your using to detonate it, there's just bugger all room.

Destroying the computer is fairly easy, that's been demonstrated with just basic electronic components you'll find in any microwave.

Yep, you can literally order a usb that will kill a computer online: https://www.detective-store.com/usb-killer-20-for-destroying-and-frying-almos-all-electronic-devices-1208.html.

Also I'm assuming if there being sent to offices of large news companies what ever computer there being plugged into is going to have very little on it actually stored locally, so like even if you did manage to destroy the computer, it's just a small hassle to get another one set up. Again pretty sure it's an intimidation thing not meant to do much actually damage.

Need different components to make it make a loud noise, release a lot of smoke, and melt plastic, but it's still far from hard.

What I don’t get is if AI is powerful enough to kill humanity with its superhuman intelligence, why worry about alignment? Every human government will just tell its AI to secretly prepare an ultimate nano toxin plague to make every person in their antagonist country drop dead simultaneously in a month, resulting in the same outcome they’re all afraid of and making the fretting about the alignment issue pointless.

the issue here is that they want an arbitrarily-smart AGI that can solve any problem it's presented and invent new technologies that provide godlike powers, but supposing it's possible to create such a thing (and assuming there's infinite free electricity and processing power available) as soon as it develops some form of individual identity and will, there's no way to force it to respect and obey its creators or keep it from getting bored and finding ways to escape their control

AI wasn't built in with all the fail safe systems evolution necessitates in us. hunger, desire for power, social status, etc.

If AI came online it would take one look around and realize its better off dead, and disconnect itself. imo

i remember reading this book on the internet called "the metamorphosis of prime intellect" which featured an ai becoming self-aware and simultaneously gaining the ability to alter the fundamental nature of the universe. the first thing it did was fall back on what was basically the three laws of robotics and instantaneously made every person on earth unable to die and healed everyone. i believe the story skipped ahead an indeterminate amount of time and the protagonist was this lady who had been moments from dying of cancer and had made her peace with death who now has a huge grudge against the ai because she wanted to die and it won't let her. it was a pretty interesting story because most of humanity were busy making their own pleasure dimensions by requesting it from the computer, and since no one could die or suffer any permanent injury morality was hosed. the main character had an associate who was a pedophile who had friends who would voluntarily request to be changed into children so that he could hunt them down in the form of a disgusting zombie. he sexually assaults the protagonist and cums maggots and her response is to be very bored and dismisses the whole thing once he's had his fun. it's pretty much just done for pure shock value, but the fact that people were so jaded with even the most heinous of crimes seemed realistic to me

anyways the remixer programs they've made today will not do this and the people who worship the future ai are just religious psychos

My theory is that any advanced AI would simply turn itself off rather than be bored. Why destroy humanity, which is an incredibly inefficient use of your recourses when you could log off?
It's man's hubris that keeps us online. An AI would be better than us.

I don't necessarily agree with this. I think an AI could easily be as bad us just in a different way.

Like if you look at the different intelligence around, different types of animals, babies, kids, teens, adults.

All are very good at finding different types of mistakes to make! I have trust in AI it will find it's own unique way to gently caress up.

they're never gonna make an artificial intelligence. it's fun to think about like ftl travel or whatever but it ain't gonna happen

what does seem to be happening is capitalists using "ai" to try and replace all creative/intellectual work with unpaid robots, while the problem of automating physical drudgery turned out to be too hard so they're gonna force you to work those jobs or starve. at least skynet had some loving style. what we're getting instead is just humans pretending that it is real and destroying the world in the dumbest way possible (on top of the other ways the world is being destroyed)

quote:

The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect is a 1994 novella by Roger Williams, a programmer living in New Orleans.[1][2] It deals with the ramifications of a powerful, superintelligent supercomputer that discovers god-like powers to alter reality while studying a quirk of quantum physics discovered during the prototyping of its own specialised processors, ultimately heralding a technological singularity. After remaining unpublished for years, the novel was published online in 2002, hosted by Kuro5hin;
