Kinda but not really? I assume you're talking about the Three Kings arc. By the point it starts Yusuke is bar none the most powerful being on Earth, and Kurama and Hiei aren't far behind. They all gently caress off to demon world for different reasons: Yusuke because he's pissed his demon ancestor won his last fight for him (and also to get answers to the whole "secretly a demon" thing as well), Kurama because he functionally gets blackmailed into it by one of the three kings, and Hiei seemingly because he just wanted to fight dudes and brood, so I guess he's closest? Kuwabara just hangs out offscreen all arc studying for entrance exams and doesn't seem too bothered by the fact that he can at will summon an energy sword that slices clean through reality.

The anime significantly expanded the final arc, although it does still have Yusuke getting knocked out in an early tournament round and waking up days later to "tournament's over!" It also cuts out the whole subplot about King Enma secretly being the real villain all along who was somehow behind everything which is probably for the best because that particular "twist" was dumb as hell.

It honestly kinda ruled. Instead of any of the heroes or villains we knew winning the tournament one of the old king’s drinking buddies wins offscreen and decrees that all demons must stop being mean.

I don't remember much of yyh other than the massive power creep on the four leads, and apparently one big fight involves the bishounen character playing the nes with a child and psyching the kid out so much that the kid dies upon getting a game over. And the main guy apparently being a demon, actually, the whole time and had to have an awakening sequence when he spent half a story arc dead?

The power creep reminds me of another comic I read in the 90s called ushio and tora about a teenager who got a spear that binds him with a tiger like monster, it ends with them having to fight the whole yokai world who was trying to kill the big yokai that held the whole of Japan on its back and then having to fight that big dude back to sleep and the kid nearly turning into a monster, that usual summer vacation in Japan I guess

Yusuke becoming a demon sucks for a lot of reasons, the big one being it just dumpsters a big thematic point of an earlier arc where you find out the big bad turned himself into a demon so he could live forever, Yusuke's mentor gives him a big speech about how growing old and accepting it is a natural part of life, and Yusuke telling the bad guy to get hosed and that he looked forward to growing old together with his waifu. Except whoops now it is heavily implied he also gets a virtually eternal demon's lifespan so uh... gently caress all that I guess. But hey at least he's got a bunch of time to get better at punching dudes! :downs:

YYH was the first anime that I ever got super into as a kid, and Yusuke is still my favorite shonen protagonist. Rewatching it is one of those things I want to get around to someday.

Super Eyepatch Wolf's Gantz video (remember that?) tricked me into reading the whole manga from start to finish. Not really worth it, especially the last quarter which completely changes the comic's genre for the worse.

gantz has a great high concept and they do so many incredibly stupid things in it, my favourite being introducing the protag's brother to become a vampire, introducing a vampire clan, realising vampires are written to be way too powerful and would destroy the aliens with ease, abandoning vampires, deciding to bring in two of the vampire characters to the final battle, realising that they can't do much because they invalidate the whole fight, and finally abandoning them immediately

the doppelganger thing is something i genuinely did enjoy esp how it's explored but oh boy the way it concluded

I am so incredibly mad at the marketing for the mangaka's current series, because it promised me "oh maybe he got all of that grimdark poo poo out of his system with Gantz" via the ad copy and then I got some of the most unpleasant manga I've ever seen crammed into a volume that technically did include all of the elements on the cover and in the description.

Rei dreams of becoming a big-ticket film director, but when he stumbles into a chance meeting with a busty adult film star, his high school life takes a turn for the strange. All manner of bizarre trouble lies ahead, and a gigantic, gorgeous woman is just the tip of the iceberg!

I didn't go further but the US publisher keeps hawking it as this lighthearted "apocalypse of the weird!" retro sci-fi thing and meanwhile I just think back to a first volume where our hero wants to do casting couch poo poo with teenage girls, and someone is posting photocopied pics of a lady all around their neighborhood going "THIS BITCH DOES PORN" and it kept escalating in misery when I was thinking "edgelord urusei yatsura" was between the covers.

I apply that treatment to the Critikal\Pyro\SomeOrdinaryGamers "I will put something chunky everyday" type of youtube videos for when nearly every channel I watched stops uploading, and while some stuff is good,
there's always that point around around the 3rd or 4th consecutive video where they say something that clearly tells me their audience is not older than 19 years old and not in the same way I would feel like if I was watching a Bluey clip or whatever. I hear "Let me try and explain the recent Apghan war in 2023 like if my audience has never heard of it" or "Doom is one of the oldest videogames ever" and I feel like if I'm watching that stuff along with the kid from Yankee Doodle Daffy.

You're going to hear a bunch about Red Rooms or whatever, but stated to an audience that might have never seen a compact disk.

One of the creator's follow up efforts was about a woman who is given the ability to grow into a giant to fight aliens who is also an adult film star and gets an underage boyfriend who she starts dating because he just breaks down in the middle of like McDonald's when she says they should just be friends. Well ain't that precious?

The Gantz author also made a manga where a psychopath killer really likes one piece, and tries to talk about it with a girl after killing her entire family. There is also a scene where somebody has a Gantz poster on the wall, and the character does a rant about how trashy Gantz is and they should read One Piece instead. It really comes across as the author being extremely salty about the success of One Piece.

Speaking of Night Mind, does anyone have any recommendations for any creators that deal with spooky stuff? Not so much true crime as mysterious disappearances, unsolved mysteries, creepy folklore and the odd alien encounter or ghost sighting. I'm preferably looking for ones that talk about the potentially supernatural stuff without being too credulous of the more woo-y explanations.

I liked Barely Sociable's videos but they made a full conspiracy theory mode video about the music industry killing off artists with overdoses including Prince and Michael Jackson. It wouldn't surprise me if it happened at one point, but the dude was acting if it was a widespread and common thing. The main evidence they provided was a possible motive.

It was supposed to be a multi-part series, but they must have gotten pushback because they haven't uploaded any more videos.

The music industry doesn't directly like poison your coke, but it does just cut people loose after controlling their lives for decades at a time. So an OD can definately be the industry's fault, even if it wasn't like a record executive's direct order.

Yeah, there's absolutely no way that a man who was severely beaten by his dad and forced to become a child star wouldn't have some deep-seated issues that never got addressed as he grew older and eventually managed to escape his abuser, only to land himself among a whole bunch of enablers who never gave him any help he desperately needed.
There's also no way that a man, who was so dependent on his secretary, that he wrote an entire song to her, because she decided that she needed to do less work for him and instead go help her dying father, and who would consistently destroy any relationship with anyone he worked with, would have issues that might need to be addressed.

Both Prince and Jackson made ridiculously great music, but they were also deeply troubled as human beings and needed help they never got.
That people can't accept that as an answer to why they're no longer with us, is not in the least bit troubling - especially when they then go on to invent conspiracy theories galore.

Yeah, his videos started out as "HERE IS THIS DEEPLY SPOOKY THING and here's, like, the actual explanation of what happened," so when I saw the music one I was expecting a turn. I never got one. I instead was left feeling that I guess its impossible to stay in those realms and not eventually start seeing a conspiracy.
