He seems to be a lot less serious in his demeanor. Shi-woon's whole thing was just being steadfast in the face of all the powerful Murim people (and impressing them through his willingness to put it all on the line), while new guy's is more just speaking his mind and not adhering to their various social norms. Shi-woon impresses the Murim through never backing down, while the new guy will just shamelessly ask for stuff.

To take the recent thing with Goomoonryong as an example, if Shi-woon were in that same situation (ignoring his relationship with Goomoonryong obviously), his approach would been something like "ask him for teaching and show his steadfast willingness to die for it, causing Goomoonryong to be impressed," while new guy shamelessly barters information in exchange for teaching (while obviously being extremely afraid but still pushing past that to shamelessly demand something of someone who could easily kill him).

murim is the korean version of "wulin" which is the term for the martial arts community in wuxia or related genres. Basically if it's got a murim in korean it's a wuxia story of some variety.

Well hot drat, I had no idea there was an actual Manhwa thread!

Okay, I'm open to suggestions on any angle; I just need action. I'm not great at keeping track of multi-layered plans between factions playing into each other's hands.

I do like:

  • Survival Story of a Sword King
  • Villains Are Destined to Die
  • I'm Only a Stepmother, but My Daughter Is Just So Cute!/ Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom
  • Get Schooled!
  • Study Group
  • Weak Hero

I'm kinda all over the place and I could be totally wrong about some things not being Manhwas just because they're on webtoon. My current 'I enjoy this but wish I had found it five years from now' series is Susuhara Is A Demon

Most webtoons eventually take a few month break at the end of “seasons” to work on future material and rest their overworked bodies.

From what I know, webtoons that haven’t sold that well or aren’t popular enough simply don’t get a new season. Sword Sheathe’s Child is loving awesome and the art is among the best I’ve ever seen in a webtoon so I reeeeaaaalllly hope it’s coming back

There’s honestly like a dozen or more wentoons I enjoy that are on mystery length breaks and at this point who knows how many will come back :(

not action, but based on Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom, A Wicked Tale of Cinderella's Stepmom (tapas licensed) is a pretty good family/romance fantasy.

for action stuff:
Return of the Mad Demon (webtoon). Murim stuff. Very pretty, main character actually does come off like he deserves the mad demon title.
Nano Machine (webtoon, but app only). Pretty good murim action stuff once you accept the weird time travel nano machines.
Escort Warrior (unlicensed afaik). Some good Sad Old Killer comes out of retirement. It's a bit slow on getting into the action because of that, though.
Return to Player (webtoon). Constellation action stuff. I'm not going to lie this comic is a bit ugly, but ugly in a way I like.
Masters of Lightning Knives (tapas). Mysterious old martial arts master adopts an orphan.

I'd recommend SSS Class Revival Hunter too but that's been on indefinite season break for like a year or something so rip that.

A couple of my favorites (that I don't think others included I'm their replies, though it's possible I missed them):

I Don't Want This Kind of Hero - a sort of comedy/character drama that is extremely good. It's kind of slow to start, but I find it very compelling and the humor is top tier

Kubera - also extremely good, long-running fantasy with a focus on the characters. A very unique story - there isn't anything else quite like it.

That Works

Gonna also in general rec (as always)

Taekwondo Kid - for some reason this just completely hits the vibe of high school sports. If you were ever in a martial art, or wrestling or track and field etc it just captures that same mentality of training and going to tournaments etc, lots of team members rooting each other on etc. The art style is unique in an interesting way that I like as well, its not beautiful or skillful but it works for the action and the characters are all distinct. Just one of those that i like that I can't well describe, but its good, especially if you were ever an athlete, it hits home.

Wind Breaker - just all around decent. Fun enough story, goofy out of nowhere at times and not up its own rear end. I've consistently enjoyed it for a while, decent art, fun characters etc. Mostly about teenagers living up to (or not) the expectations of those around them and about cycling and some counterculture stuff. More funny than serious.

Thanks! I think I might've worded it badly initially but I don't have anything against low stakes or comedy manhwa/manhuas I just want them to have an active plot progessing forward or something. Or even just the protagonist is doing something? I like stories like Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom that have a normal and less detailed doodle art style for side jokes in it, for example. There's just so much stuff on webtoons alone, I don't know how to filter out the good ones. Always happy to hear another female protagonist one though. Even the isekais tend to avoid the worst pitfalls with just that small difference.

I'm not really sure how to describe those types of manhwa though. I'm a sucker for a 'Whoops, I died, haha, silly me. Let's do that again' stories though. Reincarnation's dope, seeing people fix their lives and they all live happily ever after when they get a second shot at it is fun.

Eleceed is #1 recommendation. I literally cannot recommend it enough. Magnificent action, magnificent characters, magnificent cats.
"The Newbie is Too Strong" is also quite fun IMO.
The S-Classes that I Raised is quite good. The MC is weak but everyone around him is a powerhouse so there's tons of fighting.
Reformation of a Deadbeat Noble has lots of action, not as much fighting at first but still plenty going on. No plots-within-plots but lots of mysteries (Who is the mysterious man in his dreams? and such)
The Novel's Extra (Remake) is quite good - author is Isekai'ed into his own story, but now there's a co-author so the plot goes in unfamiliar directions and stuff. Currently in between seasons.

Literally every single arc.

I bounced off Eleceed very early on. Maybe I needed to give it more of a chance, but the start just didn’t grasp me. Guy turns himself into a cat then sits around doing nothing. Which is pretty in-character for a cat, but did little to get me hooked.

The newbie is too strong I also bounced off early. I’m actually kind of a sucker for “tower of trials” style manwhas, especially if they have good scenario design to them. But I absolutely cannot stand ‘streamer sucking up to twitch chat’ elements. I already find it intolerable with real streamers, but doubly so when it’s fictional streamers appealing to fictional viewers. And it was particularly annoying here because the guy already knows what to do, but he’s pretending to be puzzling things out for the sake of impressing non-existent people.

I find it much easier to criticise things than to champion them, but some things I like:

Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint
Has interesting scenario design. Even though the MC knows almost everything it still does a good job of sweeping him up in events beyond his control. Constellations/Gods/Whatever feel powerful and self-interested, so they feel more like celestial beings than twitch chat losers.

Doom Breaker
Takes a little while to get going, but it’s a regression story that feels like it’s plotted out in advance and the small details matter. Does a good job of portraying a world where it feels like things are just about to go horribly wrong all over the place at roughly the same time. Which means whenever the MC scores a big win, he immediately has to pivot to sorting out the next disaster before the world gets ruined so it does a good job at maintaining an overhanging threat. Also the gods are dicks.

Greatest Estate Developer
MC is the right side of rear end in a top hat - he’s arrogant, super greedy and aspires to be lazy; but also works hard, protects his people and takes the biggest risks himself. The focus on construction gives it a unique feel, and differentiates it from a typical power fantasy. E.g. Getting a massive strength boost and getting excited about mining more efficiently. Fun faces, cute summon creatures and good character banter. It sort of feels like stuff just happens arbitrarily at some points though, especially when introducing new arcs. “Here’s *rolls dice* a vision of your home getting attacked by monsters. You should probably do something about that.” Some parts of the setting are kind of generic too, but the fantasy races have decent (if somewhat silly) twists to them.

Mother's Contract Marriage (tapas) is one of those, seen from the perspective of the daughter very confused by her mother's sudden change of heart. Medieval europe aesthetic.
Fantasie of a Stepmother (tapas) also, about a stepmother who wasn't close with the kids after her husband died because she was learning how to manage the house in her first life, managing to bond with them this time. This one might be a little too busy with the politicking, but it's very good.

I've been enjoying Genius of Unique Lineage. It has decent art, action is good and it's funny. The main character isn't an rear end in a top hat. He's talented but you see him struggle and actually has to work at getting the stuff he does right and when it finally clicks its fun to see him put skills into action.

It's one of those gates open and everyone gets super powers stories. The hook is he's the only successful cross breed between two of the super power factions. His parents both think the other is a normal human and want him to keep it a secret.

Dammit, I'm still bad at explaining myself. I haven't really had trouble finding reincarnation stuff at all, it's stuff like Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom or If You Touch My Brother, You're All Dead that I don't really know how to search for. They have a fairly similar art style and sense of humour to them with the less detailed doodle versions of the characters every so often and I really like those.

I'm still not sick of isekai stories, I just don't want any lazy harem set ups or (The most frustrating premise I can encounter) 'Guy who is more powerful than everyone on the planet and is somehow unaware of this after turning a mountain range into a valley?' types of stories.

I'm a big fan of villlainess ones since they do tend to have a goofy angle on them, although I'm sad I haven't seen any that play around with it as much as I like with like, various races and stuff. Like I want one where eight things go wrong and they wake up as the villainess of the story and also part dragon or demon too.

I have a general Korean language question.

What's up with the "keuk" sound? It seems like it's some sort of sound equivalent to "ugh" or "an onomatopaeia for flinching," but it always confuses me that translators don't use something else, because "keuk" sounds a little strange when read in English. It's sort of like leaving "pikapika" in a Japanese translation instead of just translating it into "shining" (or a similar thing for one of the other countless onomatopaeia).

Okay I caught up with the unofficial Eleceed stuff and I guess I'll admit I was wrong. One singular bad guy was not solved by Kayden releasing his power limits and slowing his recovery. Instead someone else showed up to solve the problem for the MC.

It's getting a little annoying. Every arc has the exact same layout just with escalation. MC shows off they are so cool -> woah everyone is amazed -> worse guy shows up, nearly kills MC -> mentor shows up and saves him -> MC promises to get stronger and train harder -> repeat.

Luckily the actual characters (besides the MC who is just Generically Nice Guy mixed with Fight Addict) are really good and the cats are adorable.
