My personal irritant for today is that I camped all last weekend so I didn’t have time to prepare meals for the week, which is fine because I’m in the office this week and their cafeteria is pretty decent

Except they’ve been pushing people back into the office and now the cafeteria is falling on its face and keeps pumping out lovely food or just straight up running out of food before 12:00 which is the earliest I can get away from my desk for lunch

Selective moral outrage. As opposed to general moral outrage?

Anyway, I'm not outraged. This sort of thing is the water we swim in. Capitalism runs on exploitation. Hell, I'm a labor rep. I deal with this stuff everyday. The only unique problem of Mr. Beast is a bunch of young people are buying into his charity as an excuse for embracing grindset mentality nonsense.

Grindset means working yourself to the bone while you're young because you're young and you can handle the hours so you work like 80 hours a week and share a 500 sq foot loft with four people or some poo poo and don't try to date or get married or start a family until you're in your mid 30s

I hate grindset mentality or rather I should say I hate what my understanding of it is, could be off

e: I guess my picture of it is a bunch of people kiling themselves with work at a time in their lives when they should be enjoying living and probably aren't even making all that much for the work they do with a dream of retiring at 40

Basically, go above and beyond. Always give 110%. When you commute to work, why aren't you also ubering someone near there? When your boss tells you to produce X why don't you produce 3x X?

Also it seems like a lot of the people who post grindset poo poo are trying to make their living from grindset posting, so their main "job" is posting about how hard people should be working.

Performative grindset poo poo is also great because it gives poo poo like the executive who posted her calendar showing being scheduled for like 18 hours a day, but then parts of it were finding a creative way to re-brand taking a 90 minute lunch.

Tangential grindset poo poo is the articles about people who became millionaires at 27 that always bury having college and apartment paid for and being given an executive-level job straight out of college at their uncle's company.

e: I, on the other hand, showed up late (vet visit for the cats), plan to leave early, and will spend a full hour today filling out a requisition for basic lab supplies because our ERP system needs to think for 30 seconds between every new line and many of the fields within a line. He actively pushed me away from programming despite my interest in it, so now I'm a chemical engineer who does as much computer touching stuff as possible. Ha, my wife is a speech path. Grad school at NYU, multiple hundred thousand dollar student loans, works with needy, underserved kids literally changing the trajectory of their lives. Makes less than her high school grad husband. Made a hell of lot less before I took a pay cut to work for my union.

Very true. I work much longer and harder now in my new career and am happier for it despite the lower pay. The only problem is that my new high intensity career aligned with becoming a dad. I had much more time to work myself to the bone when I was 21-25 and no good employer wanted me.

My mother on the other hand is massively type A, and constantly harrangued my father into getting higher paying jobs, which moved him into an endless array of startups from like 2000 on. So he was working his butt off for this string of companies that all flamed out / got purchased and he'd move onto the next one. Meanwhile her constant pestering raised a socialist and a weed smoking goat farmer, so maybe she should just take the L on hustle mentality.

Are you going to it from the "Continue Watching" or "Recently Watched" (whatever Disney calls it) on the home page? I think that's where I started the long episode from without realizing it was so long, but maybe it would be there if I dug into the actual show page. We usually have a few things on rotation spread between different services, so I almost exclusively use the continue watching function across all of them. I think HBO shows how long things will be from that menu, but I'd need to log in irl to document my specific gripes with each service.

At least Hulu has now added the description to show what sport is being played in the live sports streaming. When they first added the ESPN+ stuff it would just be poo poo like Argentina vs. South Korea with no other context offered.

I usually go into the Mandalorian “page” or whatever because it always has the last episode I watched on “continue watching” main page because the credits are like 6 minutes long and as far as I know there’s no way to clear it except navigating to the next episode manually. But then the problem just repeats itself.

Farming is definitely way more work then I'll ever do for sure.

Over Christmas, she was telling me about how they got a horse that none of the billion horse rescues wanted, because he won't let anyone ride him, and also hates all other non-horses, so it just stays with their pony in a corner of the farm and tries to attack any goats that wander over to him. Plus side it's stomped a number of coyotes to death, so that's cool.

My parent's weren't like "Leper you must become a doctor or a lawyer", my stepdad was a pipe fitter; they just wanted me to be a hard worker and successful, but from their narrow boomer perspective, working 30 hours a week and taking night classes wasn't that, because I wasn't rapidly earning a degree that they recognized, I wasn't pounding the streets to find a better job, I was not cutting my hair and dressing for success, all that poo poo.

At my first job, a tech startup in SF, I had to patiently explain that no, I was not going to wear a suit to work, I would stick out like a sore thumb, my boss wore jeans and a t-shirt and the receptionist had a pink mohawk.

Also my younger sibling was a colossal fuckup and while she was getting fired from jobs, faking going to school, having to move back into their basement, etc. it may have slowly dawned on them that actually I was fine but they'll never say a word out loud to that effect and honestly I hope they don't because it'd make my younger sister feel bad if she heard about it.
