last night i had another edition of a recurring dream i get where i'm driving to canada and the border crossing is this weird steep hill that you have to drive round and round a narrow, helical road to slowly ascend and then there's a heavily-guarded cold-war-style checkpoint bridge at the very top that disappears off into the invisible foggy mist of canada, but i forgot my passport so i have to drive all the way back down again

that's my canada dream story thanks for reading

that does actually look an awful lot like my dream. though in my dream the road goes around the hill rather than next to it, it is up on weird supports like that and the general surrounding area looks very similar, bizarre.

we’re looking around Nanaimo, cause Victoria is laughably priced. sadly.

there's a lot of yeehaw here for sure, but it gets insane in the summer when all the albertans show up. my down payment was what an entire house should cost, but other than that i am loving it. massive step up over saskatoon, which was a massive step up over san francisco

nanaimo is cool, but the island is certainly not free of weirdos. last february victoria was rammed full of convoy psychos every weekend. pretty near every car on the highway from vic to nanaimo was heading into town to honk their horn.

so in India the notice period seemed to be 90 or 180 days, so you’d make an offer, the candidate would accept, then spend the last 30 days of their notice period marketing themselves as ‘available at short notice’ to other employers to try to get a better offer. once you understood this as an employer it was fine because you’d just budget for a pay adjustment before they started but it’s a surprise the first time. we were hiring for competitive roles so it was fine. good hustle, gotta respect it.

being a low paying employer in that market would not be fun.

yeah also people accept jobs and just don't turn up so you have to factor that in as well. which in practice means you're getting the person that couldn't get a job anywhere else

yeah i've got it a few times, relatively recently actually. otherwise i doubt i'd remember it. it's not really scary per se, it's more like it's just a giant corkscrew-esque tower. sometimes on the way down i drive over the edge just to land on a lower level lol

Accenture Plc surged after saying it will cut 19,000 jobs — about 2.5% of its workforce — over the next 18 months, one of the largest rounds of dismissals in a consultancy sector facing strong economic headwinds.

The shares climbed as much as 8.4% in New York following the announcement, the biggest intraday gain since December 2021. The company said it expects to incur $1.2 billion in employee severance and other personnel costs, and will spend an extra $300 million on office space consolidation. It also trimmed its forecasts, with revenue expected to grow between 8% and 10% this fiscal year, down from a previous range of 8% to 11%.

Wasn't Accenture the consulting firm that Facebook was using to outsource it moderation, in an act of supreme Elite University thinking that didn't even recognize the existence of the temp firms out there which actually specialize in filling out customer support type roles in most places? (After hearing that, I was almost surprised that Meta wasn't outsourcing their janitorial services to some white-shoe firm.)

EY were chasing me on LinkedIn about one of their spinoff specialist consultancy practices, they're getting super into that poo poo.

so are law firms, I got the most pathetically unsuccessful sales pitch from one recently where they unironically said "we may use regex as one of several tools like machine learning" to (I think) sound clever to the business guys on the call

when the place I just signed a contract with first got in touch with me last year one of the things they were looking for was someone to wrangle vendors in the same ai extractions space and I said that they were all snake oil merchants of varying degrees, not expecting this view to go down so well I'd get offered a job lol
