So this is pretty cool. All of our strikers are up with a bunch of ginormous cruise missile like things.

It looks like something you'd see at a gas station in Nevada or southern Wisconsin with a Miller High Life sign on the side.

Flight Ripper30 looks to be the first on station at Faya Largeau Airport. The ToT is a bit off due to the zig-zag as our J-16's refueled. I now realize I should have staggered my attack by 30 seconds so I wouldn't be screen capping everyone at once.

Ripper30 discovers there is still CAP somewhere. They manage to evade and continue with the attack run.

:ohdear:

Look at that luck!

One striker down!

Can you imagine how terrifying that would be? Heads down, flying nap of the earth, the sun rising behind you. When suddenly your RWR squawks and all you know is a missile is coming. Flight Ripper30 succumbs to the next barrage.

Argh, a flight evades and now has to refuel. I'm going to have them RTB.

It must be a headwind or something, everyone needs to get fuel. I knew I was cutting it close fuel wise. poo poo. So I send the tanker closer

The Abeche airport is going to get hosed up.

SAM launch!

Multiple SAM's! We lose Gunman 1.

Argh, the Crotale NG just whoop rear end and are destroying my incoming flights.

We get bombs on target but at great cost. It's about now I realize that my SEAD flight never launched.

Abeche though gets fairly torn up.

A fuel leak knocks a Fencer out literally 5 miles away from the airfield.

The evading over the target area has revealed a fatal flaw in my plan. I guess we cut it too close on fuel stores.

To add insult to injury, our strike on the Rafale bases has been called off due to flight time.

But it is not all sadness, for we have contacts... skunks... an FFG.

And there it is.

Our contact with the CDG is tenuous. As best I can tell they are headed 347 degrees at 15 knots. The two escorts are close behind. But for us, we have one goal, the Carrier.

I slow the 101 - Carvor and set it on an intercept. It should be able to launch both anti-ship missiles and torpedos if we time this right. The Type 99 Habeas Dorkus, will also send out a barrage from the rear.

Glynnenstein gets the order, his target is in range.

Meanwhile Dance Officer and his meager flight of FanTan's head out for a brief strike.

Rockets away! Not sure how the accuracy will be at 11,000 FT, but hey, Manpads!

Scratch one T-54!

lol

And he eats one! But he stays aloft. The next FanTan knocks out like 4 tanks with his rocket strike.

Troubling. I'm going to send up our last MPA and fix the position for the main strike.

We get a sonar fix, it's the D620 - Forbin.

That's our main problem there, a capable VLS with a lot of interceptors. We need to overwhelm it with vampires.

Strikers go up!

Carvor pops up to periscope depth and sees Rafale M's overhead, but more importantly fixes the position of the CDG.

Our Glorious MPA fixes the CDG with its radar, moments before it eats poo poo.

Look at that air wing!

Lt Skooma512 valiantly intercepts a missile with his aircraft.

We have a solid location, the strike is a go!

Barrage away!

Habeas opens fire as well.

First weapons close are Habeas's flight of YJ-18's. All are intercepted less than 2 nm out from the CDG.

The faster barrage of YJ-12's launches from further out.

Glynnenstein lets loose with his battery of SSM's. They furiously reload for a secondary barrage.

Carvor strikes the D620 with several torpedos! If we can knock out the VLS on this it will do amazing things for the rest of the strike.

:ohdear:

The CDG and its remaining escort intercept almost every single one of our vampires... We have a few that miss, but are intercepted not by the VLS but by a CIWS. Are they dry? Carvor launches torpedos!

Glynnenstein's final barrage smashes into the De Gaulle!

And the remaining torpedos re-acquire and strike the LaFayette!

The CDG, at Position latitude='17.0950243530583', longitude='41.0023344600916', sinks in 1,178 ft of water.

That was rough! But I think a worthwhile trade for the Charles De Gaulle.

The Chadian ground forces got kind of wrecked, I guess? Not bad for 3 FanTan's and some Z-19's.

I reviewed the save file and the Mirages were going to launch in two hours or so, at the same time as another Rafale OCA strike. So we absolutely got our knocks in while we could.

In hindsight my fuel planning was lacking which led to the Chadian air bases being, basically, untouched. We roughed up Abeche a little bit, but not enough to really stop them. The Carvor, knocking out that DDG, really saved that barrage. Had that DDG been alive I don't think we'd have gotten any vampires through.

France lost its only aircraft carrier, 1/2 of its modern AA destroyers, 1/6 of its surface combat frigates, and 1/3rd of all its modern fighters...for less than a squadron of modern chinese fighters and a grab bag of mostly obsolete second stringers and some random utility planes...pretty great trade for China!

Feels like the question is PL-10s vs Meteors. I wish I could be surprised at how murderously effective the Meteors are against our craft (oh god is this what it was like for the OPFOR in all those Hayard Gunnes scenarios?) but I'm honestly a little surprised the Rafales didn't dodge more of our LRAAMs.

CMO recently redid missile kinematic modelling and its caused some unexpected results. Looking at claimed range of a weapon then giving a burn-time needed to achieve that range means that the No Escape Zone (highest hit chance zone) for some weapons is VERY optimistic as a result.

It'll no doubt get refined in the future.

The "unexpected results" are already familiar to anyone playing combat flight sims like DCS or F4 (and the real AAW pros we consulted with). The big pushback is from people too accustomed to the old "photon torpedo"-like missile behavior, who apparently are uncomfortable with the need to actually pay attention to launch ranges now.

Progress almost always means you piss off some people.

The sub definitely knocked the CDG out, but even if it had only taken out the first DDG the saturation would have been enough for the YJ-12's to "eventually" get through. By the final barrage it was CIWS only. There's probably a pretty narrow reload window on the VLS so the time-on-target was really critical.

Greece Vs. Turkey!

quote:

Location: East Mediterranean

Date: 11 June 2020

Description:

A few decades ago, during the "1987 crisis" Greece and Turkey came very close to Armed Conflict over disputed drilling zones in the Aegean Sea. Turkish expanding Sea Exploration Activities with Piri Reis and Sismik 1 ships created a provoked tension between the two countries. Greek plans also to nationalize the consortium of companies that was drilling oil off Thasos island and a planned drilling activity 11 miles east of the island, was recognized as illegal and provocative by the Turkish Government. The crisis escalated quickly and military forces of both countries were set on the highest alert level while Political and Military leaders of both countries threatened to use armed force if obstructed by the other.

The crisis was ended when international pressure was increased (mainly from other NATO allied countries) and Britain's Lord Carrington, the Secretary General of NATO, urged Greece and Turkey to avoid the use of force and offered to act as a mediator.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdgogan recently unveiled his plans for a wider role of Turkey in the Region and the expansion of the country's sphere of influence even outside its physical borders

September 2, 2019: Turkish Prime Minister makes clear his intentions as he presents his Mavi Vatan (Blue Motherland) plan. Based on this claim, Turkey does not recognize officially Exclusive Economic Zone rights to any Greek island close to Continental Turkey, thus claiming that half the Aegean Sea and very large areas even over Libya are part of its own Exclusive Economic Zone. The newly elected Greek government issues a protest.

December 5, 2019: The Turkey-Libya EEZ Agreement is announced and days after, Turkey submits it officially in the UN. Greece reacts by declaring it as invalid. Given the ongoing civil war, Turkey makes it public that will assist the GNA (Government of National Accord) militarily.

January 17 2020: Greece reacts by inviting General Haftar, leader of LNA (Libyan National Army) for talks before his trip in Germany ahead of another round of peace talks.

February 2020: Turkey is facing increasing casualties in the Syrian front as the Syrian Army with the support of Russia is launching a series of counterattacks north.33 Turkish soldiers die in a single air raid.

February 28 2020: Turkey reacts by declaring that all restrictions on the land borders with Greece are lifted and all immigrants are free to cross. In fact, key members of the Turkish Government make no secret that their aim is to blackmail EU for financial aid and destabilise the Greek Government. This escalates into a show of will as Greece declares its firm position not to allow any trespassers and mobilises Border Guards, Police, and Army while receiving token reinforcements from Poland, Austria and Italy.

March 20 2020: Greece has managed to protect what considers to be European borders by having successfully blocked any trespassing attempts that were supported by Turkish police. Rumours regarding the impact of Covid-19 in Turkey start circulating while Greece is facing a second major crisis and announces a general lock-down.

April 22 2020: Drill ships Fatih & Yavuz and research vessels Barbaros and Orucreis continue their activities inside what Cyprus considers to be their EEZ. They are escorted by a number of ships of Turkish navy with UAV support .Greek foreign ministry condemns this as an act of piracy. This action takes place while Turkey sees mounting losses due to Covid-19, Turkish lira on a free fall and oil prices so low that drilling is not viable.

13 April to 3 May: Exxon Mobil, Noble Energy, ENI and Total are stepping out (2 year period) from most of the sea exploration and Drilling activities on Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone due to uncertainity an low prices of Oil/Gas in international markets .

3 May: A Greek Army Hellicopter trasporting the Minister of Defence to Aegean Oinouses island have been harassed by two turkish F-16 fighter jets. The response from Hellenic Airforce was immediate and two Mirage 2000-5 mk2 scrambled and intercepted them.

May 2020: Greece is highly regarded as the country that managed to win the fight against the pandemic. There are ongoing talks as to the size of EE financial help ranging in the tune of €15-25Bn. Turkey runs a campaign to declare themselves Covid-19 free that backfires massively as the EU declare it not a safe place. More than 80% of companies in the hospitality sector declare bankruptcies. Following that, a wave of nationalisation of bankrupt companies follows that only stretches further the already stretched Turkish economy

June 08 2020: Unofficial discussions between Turkey and the International Monetary Fund are leaked. Part of that, mentions what most suspect about the number of victims due to Covid-19 and the terrible situation of the Turkish economy. Turkey reacts by declaring strict capital controls and blaming USA & Greece.

Present: Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs comes to the following grim realization; considering that the Greek economy is rapidly recovering and so does their armed forces and pitting that against the Turkish armed forces facing a quasi-embargo from the USA they realize that there is only a small window of opportunity to impose their will based on armed force. MIT intelligence bureau in a top secret memo confirms that there is a significant part of the armed forces that are discontent with current policies.

Turkey needs to act fast. The timing couldn't be better but also tight

Due to Covid-19, there is no tourism so no risk for collateral damages or casualties, the seas are relatively empty as international trading is slowly recovering, and most foreign capital ships are anchored. In addition Energy Giants like Exxon Mobil, Noble Energy, ENI and Total are freezing their offshore activities on Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone and Easteran Mediterranean Sea.

Turkey announces that it will immediately commence exploration in at least two parts where Greece and Cyprus are strongly contesting and consider as part of their EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone).
Having strong media coverage and with the majority of their Navy providing cover, two platforms begin their trip in what is expected to signify Turkey's dominance in East Med and thus toppling a long standing status quo.

While the Greek government evaluates the situation, news of further 2 vessels with adequate armed escort hit the media.

Due to Jamming from both sides, AIS (civilian Automatic Identification System) is not fully functional. Situation is complicated for both sides and civilian or allied casualties will create a diplomatic turmoil. Moreover a US Sub has left Suda port a few hours before and operates in the wider area, with unknown intentions. It is clear though that any attack on it will be considered as an act of hostility from the US.

Turkey has even issued a Declaration of its EEZ at the United Nations stating the borders of their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which includes major parts of Greece's and Cyprus EEZ. They have warned the Cypriot and the Greek Governments that they intend to defend their EEZ against any foreign vessels and warships that violate their modern "Lebensraum" (Territory claimed by a nation or state on the grounds that it is necessary for survival or growth)

Greeks are facing a dilemma:
Accept the fait accompli or fight back for something that could change the future of the country forever. While Turkey bets on the first, Greeks decide the second!

War...war is inevitable!

That's the fluff, I'll post the OOB's for each side and we can pick which one to play.

First up, Greece!

quote:

Commander a strong naval force has been monitored near Cyprus. Several Turkish naval ships have been gathered around the Fatih (Conqueror) and Yavuz Drilling Sea Drilling ship. These Massive Platforms have begun drillings inside Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone. Additionally, the Turkish Air Force provides them with air support.

They are unfriendly but intel suggests that they will become hostile if they feel threatened. Avoid flying over Turkey because this will be treated as act of war according to Turkish Minister of Defence, Hulusi Akkar. Also Barbaros Sea Explorer vessel is conducting research activities around Kastelorizo. Oruc Reis Explorer vessel is somewhere south of Cyprus. Consider them as priority targets.

The Drilling Ships along with the Sea Explorer vessels are your main targets

While you are ordered to perform a multi spectral Alpha Strike against their forces, keep in mind that NIS (National Intelligence Service) informers inside Turkish Supreme National council suggest that the turkish side is also preparing for a pre-emptive strike against our forces.

Check the no-fly zones between Crete and Cyprus. For these areas, Turkey have published navtex that they will conduct Live Fire Exercises and anyone in the vicinity of these area might be considered as hostile.

Turkish Naval forces gave an Ultimatum that: "Greek Naval forces should withdraw from their positions in Eastern Aegean. In case of advancement this is an act of war".

This translates to an updated "Casus Beli" as in the crisis of 1996 IMIA and immediate start of hostilities!

Commander, your main mission is to find and destroy the Turkish Drilling ships along with a number of Sea Explorer vessels. This action will send a strong message to the Turkish side to withdraw from Cyprus EEZ. Recon is a primary priority. Turkey has an unfriendly posture but the TDK (turkish navy) have declared that it would not hesitate to shoot first if you are flying close to the Platforms and Explorer Ships (check No-Navigation Zones). Also avoid flying over turkish soil as this will be seen as hostile activity. You might have to use your submarines to get a closer look around the platform if you manage to stay undetected. A big number of civillian ships are passing through the contested area. Avoid any collateral damage as this will cause us international political losses . Inflict maximum damage to the turkish naval presence but remember that your High value target is the drilling ship itself!

Currently your Mirage 2000 EGM are arming for a AsuW strike mission against Turkish Naval Forces. You can alternatively reroute to Kasteli AFB if you want to Turkish Naval Forces in Eastern Med. To support your TASMO missions, a group of C130 can transfer the remaining AM-39 Exocet missiles there. It is up to you either to use Kasteli AFB as FOB for your TASMO operations or stick to Tanagra AFB and use long strike loadouts

Kasteli is the closest Forward Operating Airforce Base (FOB) we have against their naval forces in Eastern Med.

quote:

EXECUTION

Your orders are the following:

A) Eliminate the Yavuz and Fatih Sea Oil Drilling platforms near Cyprus
B) Eliminate the Barbaros and Oruc Reis Research Vessels
C) Land forces in the North will be placed in alert but will assume a defensive posture and will not be for now under your command
D) You have been granted permission to hit major military land based targets in-depth inside Turkey if you deem that they pose a high risk to the safety of the country or armed forces. The furthest target you are authorized to strike is the Eskisehir AFB

E) National Intelligence Service (Intel) suggests that there are two S400 battalions. One battalion is placed near Ankara and the other is expected in the vicinity area north-west of Cyprus. Even if their crew is inexperienced or the deliveries of the missiles haven't finished yet, they pose a serious threat. Monitor closely and pay extra caution, with its superior range and sensors they probably cover both their Capital and their main naval forces in Eastern Mediterranean. Destroying their S400 battalion while it is not the highest priority, it will contribute to our cause massively in military and political terms.

F) Bonus Mission: You have been granted permission to hit key industrial facilities in Turkey, including Turpas Oil Refinery located in Izmir, TUSAS Engine Industrial Complex located in Eskisehir and Roketsan Missile Industrial Complex located in Ankara

G) You have 36 hours to accomplish your mission.

H) Avoid collateral damage and any civilian casualties. Your Rules of Engagement are Weapons Tight.

There's a lot going on here. Way more than just sink a French Carrier.

Our navy is already deployed in support of the drilling platforms. We expect that if our deployment goes unchallenged for a short number of days, we will be in an undisputed negotiating position.

Notification has already been passed that any provocative move close to any of our units will be considered a hostile action and will be dealt accordingly.

Your orders:

Defend without engaging Greek units, unless they violate our borders or get close to any of our SAGs.

Prepare your forces for the possibility of a full escalation within the next 24 hours.

In the event of hostilities, your priorities are the following:

A) Destroy any part of the Greek forces that you deem necessary in order to protect our offshore drilling activities. High Value Targets (HVT) include Frigates, Aew and Maritime Aircraft, Hi-SAM (like S300/Patriot)

B) The following airbases Runways are considered top priority targets: Skyros, Agxialos & Larissa. Pafos AFB in Southern Cyprus is also a high value target as the HAF might attempt to shift units there.

C) Use our marines that are already loaded to occupy Lesvos Island ( Success of that mission would force the Greek side to accept our terms) (Developer's note: Move the LST fleet in the assigned area RP Landing Lesvos Zone 1-4 and keep them for 8 hours in order for the landing to be considered successful. Also try to advance till the center of the island (your can use also Blackhawk/T-129 Attak Helicopters stationed in Cigli to support this mission).

D) Destroy the Greek Parliament and Pentagon (Greek armed forces HQ), located in Athens

E) Destroy key HVT Industrial Facilities in Greek Mainland which includes Elpe and Motor Oil (LPC) Oil Refinery located in Aspropyrgos, EAS industrial complex located in Athens and HAI Aviation Industrial Complex located in Sximatari near Tanagra AFB

At first I'm like oh, this is the defensive side, until I got to "Destroy the Greek Parliament and Pentagon."

Enemy Forces

Our intelligence confirms that the vast majority of the Greek Air & Naval forces have mobilized or are in the process of. Pay special attention to a number of systems that are of strategic significance. Be prepared that in the event of hostilities, the Greeks will try to maximize their use . Do not underestimate them

U214 AIP: considered to be one of the most advanced submarines operating in East Med.
Scalp: Air launched cruise missile with an estimated range of more than 200 miles. Used by Mirage 2000-5 mk2, located in Tanagra AFB
AM-39 Exocet : Used by Mirage 2000 EGM, located in Tanagra AFB

SSM MM40 Coastal batteries, unknwown location, probably dispersed around Aegean Islands and Cyprus

DWS39 AFDS: Anti-Runway Weapon. Range around 8 nm. Defend closely your AFBs to avoid being locked out from Air Operations

Interesting Intel report on the Greeks. The sub is a definite threat, but how much water can it cover in a short time period?

QUESTION

So what say ye, Türkiye or Ελληνική Δημοκρατία?

Those Turkish forces :dogstare:

I kinda want to run Greece. It looks like we'll be on the defensive somewhat against...all of that.

Yeah, Greece is going to have a hard time dealing with that, on the one hand Greece has easier targets, on the other hand Turkey is clearly going in for an entirely different war than what Greece expects, a submarine lucking into a target that really shouldn't have been there for its own good isn't gonna work here.
