Not to shill but again, the Fed's don't pay their IT that bad so if you're looking for a stable government gig give USAJOBS a look. Pay is based on locality so it's not going to be great in AR but even then entry level is going to be more like your senior pay.

Depending on where you live non-remote Fed jobs may be few and far between but its worth a look.

I'm honestly happy where I'm at. Lucky enough to have a team who are competent and dedicated to the mission. I try to be as flexible as possible for work/life balance since it is butts-in-seats 40 hours a week, generally. Bennies are decent at least. CoL is bottom of the barrel, so fast food and retail are only just now coming around to $10-12 per hour starting in the area.

Next year my Public Service Loan Forgiveness kicks in, so I may be singing a different tune!

Back at the ad agency, our prize possession was a $15k (in ~2003) LED projector with a hard shell travel case. One Thursday one of the junior account people signs it out for a New Business pitch. Come Tuesday, I get called into the main conference room by the VP of New Business. He's got the president of the local agency (75-person office, $100mil annual revenue) and the Senior Executive Creative Director for North America (the guy who did the Got Milk? campaign) with him.

The VP goes off on me. "Rant rave the projector didn't work rant rave rant rave we looked like assholes up there rant rave this cost us a $5 mil pitch rant rave what do you have to say for yourself?"

"Did it work during rehearsal?"

MFer froze. His brain just segfaulted and he froze up.

About 30 seconds of dead silence later the president says "thanks for coming in mllaneza, we'll take it from here."

I strutted out of that conference room and went out back for a smoke and a laugh.

Dumb career question:

I do tech support for a B2B app that only runs on iPads. Our next tier is really only for researching bugs and we don’t have a cap on time spent with customer since there’s nowhere to escalate to. So I do spend a lot of time looking through logs, doing support for the iPads themselves, etc. My duties are slightly more advanced than turn it off and on again (although that’s a lot of it) but I don’t really deal with desktops themselves at all beyond my own for looking up account info.

In terms of advancing my career what’s the best move. Going to another help desk that’s closer to desktops? Or something else?

I know most of us in this thread probably cut our teeth on the helpdesk and worked our way up, but it's not necessary.

What do you want to do?

My recommendation is parlay your mobile device skills into something involving mobile/modern device management like Intune, MobileIron, something like that. The traditional desktop will never go away, but there's a big shift in the way we're going to be managing these things. Microsoft Intune, Autopilot, JAMF (for Apple stuff), other Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) platforms, there's a pretty good market for folks with those skills.

Try to skip the helpdesk level and get into an administration level role.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

It’s AWS logs mainly. The system is cloud based and o don’t mind cloud stuff and I also heard cloud pays the second best after security (which I do NOT want to do. Pretty sure I’m not smarter than most criminals.) this is my second career and I got into it mainly because I wanted financial stability. Although I do really like the feeling I get when I successfully figure out what went wrong

Sounds like the next obvious step is getting some AWS certs and expanding there. You're already in it on a regular basis, so poking some of the corners may give you a better idea of where you want to jump to next.
