To be fair, he's depressed for like half the movie.

His performance could've been fine, it's just fairly subtle, but one of the big issues with the movie is that they clearly had no idea what tone they were going with casting the actors and so ended up all over the place from realistic and subtle to full noir scenery chewing (his costar reporter girl, who again would've been fine if the rest of the movie had matched her style), all jammed together.

Directorial failure more than anything else, though, I'm sure it could've been possible to get them to line up.

Yeah, I dig his low-key vibe. He looks like he’s going to be fun in that new Dungeons & Dragons movie.

I think my main criticism of the Sonic movies is in the climax of the second one when Robotnik creates the giant robot with the help of the Master Emerald it didn't play an orchestral version of this music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3JZKyaucK4

Cartoons have been selling themselves on the basis of Famous Voices for decades now. I guess that's rubbed off on the audience.

Not that it actually has anything in common with it but I wonder if someone at Dreamworks saw Luca and was like "we need a sea monster movie"

I HATE THAT HEDGEHOG, BROTHER!
I am extremely not a fan of the art style they're going for in this movie. I think it kind of works for the main girl and the villain, but it doesn't work at all on anyone else, especially the guy. He looks so so bad. Did the Smallfoot people work on this because it looks a lot like that movie did, although I think Smallfoot managed to look better than this.

Kind of a disappointing looking movie from Dreamworks after how strong Puss in Boots and The Bad Guys was. I appreciate them trying to go in different directions with the way the movies look but I think this one doesn't really nail the landing.

Also man that trailer gives away the whole movie huh

The best one of those jokes was in Invader Zim's pilot. "But he's green!" "It's a... skin condition." "YOU'VE GOT NO EARS! Is that part of your skin condition!?" "...yes...;_;"

I don't think this will end well for them... financially at least. On a creative level, literally anything vaguely new is beating "Disney live-action remake" so good job there I guess Dreamworks?

I'm assuming, that she was such a massive shut-in that nobody ever bothered to look. Alternatively concealment magic, since a kraken wizard did it. From the trailer, it sounds like that mermaid can see right through that and assumes that eventually the rest will too.

Odds aren't great but if it turns out Grandma Kraken is just as wrong about mermaids as 'we' are about krakens and the mermaid character is a red herring, that'd be a neat twist.

from what i understand he totally revamped his creative process during the interim, moving from drawn art to CG and then teaching himself blender and rigging to supplement it on top of doing the soundtrack and most of the voices as usual

it's been an education in how incredibly labor-intensive "finished" animation can be for one person
