I hear this argument so loving often. I can't deny its seductive. As someone who was an idiot liberal child the last time labour came to power, you go down the rabbit hole thinking what an actual competent left wing govt that plays the game to get into power then goes turbo socialism might look like.

If you squint really hard, I can see how a lot think that might be Starmer. It's certainly a lot more palatable fantasy than the actual reality.

Then it just devolves into looking at policy, and not being drawn into a "cult of personality" because that would be bad you see. Corbyn was a cult you see.

If you then point out how poo poo the policies are, so far its just been a "lalala" fingers in ears "labour are less poo poo what else you going to do" endless loop and I'm just tired of it.

Christ this is every conversation with my folks.

Followed by chanting "Corbyns not coming back!", as if you have to say it every time you mention politics, otherwise the man manifests in your house and tries to nationalize your sausages.

There do seem to be a fair few of us.

People can post NI political content here because nobody gives a poo poo about Northern Ireland, which is as it should be. Pretty much anywhere else on the internet where such content might be appropriate turns into a sectarian slanging match when anything political is posted.

I suppose i could post more often in the Irish thread but i don't follow their ''standard politician'' type corruption stuff & shenanigans too much to understand it really.

I mean the reality is that NI is politically a part of the UK so it makes sense to post NI politics itt, and us Free Staters with a fraternal interest in what's going on up there can just read this thread and vice versa.

But also who cares :justpost:

OwlFancier

Most of the NI politics stuff ITT is just the DUP being insane tories, which I admit does inspire a kind of unionist sentiment because we are obviously not so different.

Then again I also get that impression reading the ireland thread because apparently everything there is also tories and landlords.

I would say we gravitate here as NI culture has politics ingrained into everything.
And we get UK news more than Republic of Ireland news, so know more about the workings of Parliament than the Dail.

Edit: I am also here waiting for reparations for 800 years of english rule.

Just got an email from Octupus telling us they now own Bulb, and they're putting our direct debit up to about £180 a month. And unlike Bulb, we can't just go onto the website and manually lower it again.

So we moved here winter 2019, turned the thermostat down, turned the boiler down (way before that was a thing Martin Lewis was shouting about) and got our heating down to about £80 in the first winter, which we were eventually able to reduce down to £40 a month, which should have given us the credit to last over winter in a normal year.

This winter I added £350 credit from the DWP money we got, we had that £400 credit from the government, and we're still being told that the £120 a month we were paying isn't enough.

£40 to £180. Tell me this country isn't collapsing.

In my experience Octopus tend to overevaluate if you don't have 2 kids living at home or something along those lines, but good luck. We're 2 people and electric+gas is at about £120 a month and we've got the heating on a decent amount since we work from home.

https://twitter.com/Chican3ry/status/1639337431752114213

Once it's out there that there's a prize to grab, and the 'those crazy people' might actually be the ones palling around with Nazis, and the Nazis are getting repeatedly humiliated and getting soup on them and running away from a man dressed as a cake, you want to make sure you're not on that side no matter how much of an old contrarian oval office you are, so it may be more of a battle lines being redrawn than a tide turning thing.

You must have a different interface as a Bulb person.

I'm on octopus but I signed up with them directly so I can do that (though I want to drop it by around £20pm for the next 6 months based on my weekly meter readings and the heating has been off completely for a couple of weeks and will be now through to at least October (nuclear winters or asteroids blocking out the sun excepting) and I expecting I'll have to call them to get it lowered that much. (My DD is currently £68 ignoring the govt discount and my fix ends in October 😭
