This is such a lol, Gallant, that muppet, of all people, that guy is such a mega boomer, but really a weird move by the old Bibs, Gallant has been a loyal soldier up until now and although he was perhaps one of the few Likudniks who had something of a pre-Likud career he really wasn't in any way a challenger, the dude is a mannequin, he's about as charismatic as drying paint, so Bibi pretty much filled his ranks with with people who are party socialites through and through, and it's kind of getting harder and harder to see anyone with any claim to electoral power setting foot anywhere near Likud, so what is a histrionic move or is Bibi playing 11th dimensional chess again basically exiling Gallant and any right leaning army general who had political aspirations to yet another smallish centrist party that is likely to either to fail to pass the threshold and just contend on voters with Sa'ar\Shaked\Whoever, can't tell with that guy, I didn't hear anyone other then Ben Gvir calling for Gallant's head, there is of course the other line of thinking in which Bibi is as always an abject slave to status quo and to his billionaire benefactors that this whole saga is all about making Ben Gvir and his kahanists look like complete and total failures and wiping them out by the next elections, Bibi doesn't like sharing power and he doesn't like disrupting influences and Ben Gvir is too deranged to be controlled, perhaps it is better to make it look like Ben Gvir is calling the shots as poo poo is being edged towards the fan on multiple fronts. Really, who knows what's up with that guy. Maybe he got goaded into this by his idiot son.

Well, it's either do the largest protest movement now or never. If Netanyahu gets his way, Israel's pretense towards democracy and rule of law evaporates and then it'll be much less feasible for anything the people do to anything about their government. And of course, on Netanyahu's side of things, he also needs to kill the courts before they can get him. Although while he's definitely the center of all this, he can do this because the rest of his coalition is filled with other people with legal trouble and people who have grudges against the courts for various reasons. This whole judicial reform thing is something that is pretty much a republican talking point translated into israeli policy, the guys hawking it are funded by american conservative think tanks and they are basically trying to transplant the same public discourse, I guess it's a cost saving thing, if you can rehash clips of Ben Shapiro talking about trans kids in bathrooms and use it to raise hysteria both in Israel and in the states I guess that's a win, honestly Israelis were never that up in arms about trans people this is all such a new thing, Israel send a transwoman to the eurovision in like 96 or whatever, not that we're not horrible bigots we obviously are it's just that we never had the trans-scare and all of a sudden we do, big time. So, this is why I'm kind of open to the notion that Netanyahu is just letting Levin\Rotman embarrass themselves so that he could just say "Ok, ain't doing none of that, in fact, ain't doing nothing at all, unlike those weirdos, I'm the only responsible adult around here" but.... the judicial reform is really a move from the Trump play book, it was all about replacing supreme justices with more conservative leaning ones but because in Israel supreme justices sometimes retire it was more about controlling how they get appointed rather than simply having a conservative majority, it's really just neo-con policy, I don't think Netanyahu personally ever really cared all that much, can't know though.

Oh yeah, people here aren't terribly concerned about trans rights but it was never seriously picked as a battlefield by the extreme right. The model here always seemed to be "let the lilly livered liberals have Tel-Aviv so long as I can keep abusing brown people" And up until this point it seemed to work, most liberally affiliated jews were content enough to let thing go.

Copying my post over from GBS (sorry) since I love spreading cheer. I left Israel for France about a month ago, partly because I was (and still am) fairly certain that "it's all downhill from here". Be it this dictatorship nonsense, the Jewish religious tensions, and last but not least the Palestinian conflict - I really see absolutely no way it will get better. Even if the good guys win this particular battle, demographics will win the war. It is clear where the wind is blowing, and even if there are sudden breezes the other way, you gotta pay attention to that hurricane coming your way. That said, it does warm my heart to see everyone fighting and scoring small victories. And hey, maybe I'm wrong! I'm not

This kinda checks out with the notion that Netanyahu is giving Ben Gvir all the formal power he wants as he knows that this formal power will not survive first contact with reality, Ben Gvir's private militia kinda already exists, they're the right wing hooligans and the violent settlers and their collaborators within the army and the police that let them do whatever they want, I joked on facebook (such a boomer I am) that it's actually a good thing that Netanyahu is forming an official voluntary private militia controlled by Ben Gvir as this will make the job of the future tribunals much easier, but this is of course a somewhat optimistic view, whether this is Netanyahu's plan or not he is playing with fire, In Israel we have this trope of violent chuds who play it tough but don't actually want a fight so they tell their friends to "Hold me back before I kick this guy's rear end", I don't know how universal this trope is I definitely saw similar things play in american media but this is a tangent really!!!! my point is that Ben Gvir has always largely been a yapping dog and maybe Netanyahu is trying to call his bluff and maybe not but in the meanwhile a few protesters will get their bones broken and it looks like Netanyahu himself has become a persona non-grata in Washington.
