I'm not sure how many use the For You feed, but since it's actually the default I wouldn't be surprised if a substantial amount of users are using it regualrly. But more importantly, it's also really valuable for onboarding new users, as that's the main way for them to build up a list of people to follow until they've actually got enough going on to populate their Following feed (at least before they hosed the algorithm to turn it into a 24/7 radicalization machine). Ideally you want the For You to be the main way for users to discover new accounts to follow, which gives the algorithm more information to fine-tune its suggestions, and so on in a self-reinforcing loop. With this change, that feed will instead be populated only by brands and the absolutely worst weirdos on the site, leading to the vast majority of would-be users never ever seeing accounts they might actually be interested in.

This is true of some blood products, specifically plasma -- when I worked at a blood bank the hospitals preferred we sex match products and patients if possible for plasma. But those patients who need a blood plasma transfusion are usually undergoing some serious poo poo anyway. As far as I know it is not true of red cells, the thing most people think of as a blood transfusion.

Given the source of this I cannot imagine what her point is except that it's some anti trans thing.

The question of how the blood of trans people on stable hormone therapy performs in this respect is not as open and shut as she is implying either. Based on what I know about trans hematology, my guess would be you'd want it to match hormonal sex, but I doubt there's any data about it.

If they’re getting large enough doses of sex hormones through transfusions for long enough to matter, the priest is probably in line ahead of the endocrinologist.

Not the hormones in the blood, but the effect of hormones on your body and how it changes most non sex hormone related blood tests to be aligned with the reference ranges for your hormonal sex. The actual sex hormone measurements themselves don't really match either model.

I don't think the name is a coincidence, but don't pretend Robert Galbraith Heath is as well known as Adolf Hitler.

It is loving hilarious that such a TERF originally published using initials to hide her gender (sadly a common thing among women writers, no idea if it was her idea or her publisher's) and then when she wanted to write something other than books about a wizard school she used a male name.

Without further studies, I would assume it's a matter of people receiving that blood are already in terrible-outcome states to begin with.

Not to be as dire, but it sounds like the same thing as studies claiming sugar substitutes cause obesity ... no ... the current published study groups are including people that are already obese and trying to cut back (hence the correlation) and much better controlled studies are required to prove causation.

Here's the paper.

abstract posted:

Transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs) from female donors has been associated with increased risk of mortality. This study aims to investigate the associations between donor-recipient sex and posttransfusion mortality and morbidity in critically ill patients who received RBC transfusions from either male-only donors or from female-only donors (unisex-transfusion cases). Survival analysis was used to compare 4 groups: female-to-female, female-to-male, male-to-female, and male-to-male transfusion. Multivariate logistic model was used to evaluate the association between donor sex and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. Associations between transfusion and acute kidney injury (AKI), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and nosocomial infections were assessed. Of the 6992 patients included in the original cohort study, 403 patients received unisex-transfusion. Survival analysis and the logistic model showed that transfusion of female RBCs to male patients was associated with an increased ICU mortality compared with transfusion of female RBCs to female patients (odds ratio, 2.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-5.77; P < .05). There was a trend toward increased ARDS in patients receiving RBC from female donors compared with those receiving blood from males (P = .06), whereas AKI was higher in donor-recipient sex-matched transfusion groups compared with sex-mismatched groups (P = .05). This was an exploratory study with potential uncontrolled confounders that limits broad generalization of the findings. Results warrant further studies investigating biological mechanisms underlying the association between donor sex with adverse outcomes as well as studies on the benefit of matching of blood between donor and recipient.

It doesn't look as if trans people were included or even considered.
