Most of those are really good character designs, the only ones I'm not a fan of are the Soldier's, but that's just because they're missing his coat (the sketch ones underneath wearing the coat are spot on though).

I want to say I've seen that Mother/ Earthbound image, or at least one from the same set. It's not totally new but was made public fairly recently, it was a mockup done by Namco who tried pitching a Mother game for GameCube. The Namco rep says Iwata and Miyamoto were there and had a "WTF?!" reaction to it, not because it was terrible or anything (I don't think, at least) but because they never thought in a million years a third party would offer out of the blue to do a Mother sequel of all things.

Aside from all the big stuff like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger being on CDs, I'd also like to imagine ports of the Ys games on par with the TG16 certainly would have made Ys 5 more interesting

My concern wouldn't even be beating the technology, I'd hope there's some documentation on it or someone with really great problem-solving skills would have a plan for cutting open the plastic and diagnosing. What I think is harder is identifying who would be that person and how you get them access to the hardware.

Is it a Rare-specific device, or was it a standard part of the devkit? Other prototypes have been dumped, so if it were a standard thing there should be a way. Worst case, somebody should theoretically be able to read the flash chips directly and reassemble it into a ROM.
