GateGate was a moment in SA history when a guy who, unfortunately, has a stranglehold on Skyrim modding and added feature bloat to his stuff. In this case he added Oblivion gates to the cities of Skyrim in his mod that is supposed to move Skyrim's cities into the overworld. A goon, Upmarket Mango, makes an edit to the mod to remove the Oblivion gates, and of course the creator, Arthmoor, flipped his poo poo. First there was the kinda acceptable reason where Mango took the mod, edited it and then reuploaded it in whole. But then another goon (Ardeus) uploaded a version that required Arthmoor's mod to work.

But this still wasn't good enough for Arthmoor who would threaten to sue SA for being a "den of pirates and warez", all over his dumb feature creep. Why was this guy so full of himself over the gates? Cause he was utterly convinced that Bethesda was too lazy to adhere to their own lore and didn't put the gates in, so it was lore friendly for him to put them in. Yeah. After some time he finally relented and allowed one specific person (certainly NOT a goon) to have a patch that removes the gates, and even then he still tries to intimidate the user by going "but its unsupported by me AND WILL CONTAIN GAME KILLING BUGS".

Oh, and this got so bad that both Ardeus and Arthmoor contacted the community manager who works with the vice president of Bethesda about it, and the guy sided with Ardeus. Which caused Arthmoor to go full conspiracy theory that Bethesda was setting up a precedent that would enable mod pirates to pirate people's mods and install viruses in them to hack people downloading their mods or some stupid poo poo.

Now cut to some years after that and the Nexus makes some changes to its policies where users can hide their mods but can't utterly delete them, anyone with a link can download the mod again. Arthmoor again, flipped his poo poo cause the guy is infamous in his refusal to ever have old versions of his mods. He insists that people only want old versions of his mods because they're using pirated version of skyrim (cause pirates can't get a hold of an up to date crack of the game, you see). So in protest he took down a bunch of his mods off the Nexus, including Open Cities.

The kicker: In the past week someone released a mod that is basically Open Cities, but is entirely made from scratch using their own code, and literally within 24 hours Arthmoor reuploaded Open Cities to Nexus. I was just reminded of this saga and wanted to share it with everyone.

The FFT one was pretty cool because i don't think they have ever even considered a normal person playing FFT and they made a whole other version of the hack for all the content/qol type stuff without stuff like always scaling to your level + 5

the original romhack is one of the ones I loathe where it expects you to do every possible glitch and trick and optimally plan everything. I caught a Smight stream a while back by one of the insanedifficulty romhackers where he just made everything in the game have 10x health and removed the most well known powerful items, including making the shield rod two handed out of spite

This cant possibly be true when Minecraft modding exists. Im hazy on the details but there was once drama where one mod (I think for beekeeping before bees were added?) would break the game if combined with certain other mods due to drama between the mod creators. Also, for a while it was also treated as a horrific act to give people links that bypassed adfly (basically tinyurl but with ads that pays the creator a tiny amount per click) because it was tantamount to stealing and game piracy, which was a major catalyst in a lot of modders throwing tantrums about modpacks. And you can guess which notorious internet forum popularized modpacks and dodging sketchy ad sites.

I was poking around romhacks a while back and found this one for FFT that seems really promising: https://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=12993.0

It's one of those hacks that aims to create a more balanced experience with greater variety rather than trying to amp up the difficulty. It nerfs some things, buffs other things, makes some options more available, things like that. I was reading over the change log and basically just going "hell yeah that sounds great" to every change. The hack tries to keep the spirit of the original, too--for example it rebalances all the special knight characters to be less wildly overpowered, but leaves Orlandeau somewhat overpowered because that's his whole identity and makes sense for the story.

I should give it a try sometime soon

oh yeah there have been multiple mods that have actively sabotaged users

One of the mods used to check if it was installed in the technic folder and screw itself up.

Somewhat recently, a shader injection tool for ffxiv decided to see how fast it could ruin its own goodwill and did something like that

The FFT romhack was just called like FFT 1.3 for some reason.

Yeah I vaguely remember from the bits people posted to make fun of him that he would barely describe the torture itself but would go on for ages about his tools and brands and matinence. He had the insanely specific fetish of not fairy torture, but the tools used to fairy torture.

GregoriousT (of the Gregtech mod) decided a while back that Minecraft was too easy, which is a little weird for a mod that adds mostly automation mechanics, and made a change that doubled the amount of resources you needed to gather for your most basic recipes. Everyone hated this, particularly users of the big modpacks Gregtech was bundled in. Another big mod, Twilight Forest, added an update that checked for the presence of Gregtech, and added back the original crafting recipes if so.

Gregtech added an update that checked for the presence of Twilight Forest, and force crashed the game.
