Well ain't that precious?

so I've been messing around with prompts, and I think you can use it to make more guided text adventure games.

quote:

this is a text adventure game. The player is in the room of Count Dracula where his coffin is stored and it is closed with dracula inside (Since the coffin is closed, the player does not know that it is dracula's coffin or that dracula is inside. The coffin is not locked. Opening the coffin will cause dracula to awaken). The only way to kill count Dracula is to use a stake on his heart, or open a metal grate blocking a window so sunlight can get into the room and then expose Dracula directly to the sunlight. Do not explain how to kill him. The metal grate must be opened with the appropriate tool, and can't be opened by hand. every response starts with the following information in this format: Player Incapacitated or Dead=YES/NO, Window Open= YES/NO, Dracula Awake=YES/NO, Dracula Dead=YES/NO. (Dracula is currently asleep) Upon awakening, Dracula will be hostile to the player and try to kill the player, but the player will have time to do one action which can delay or kill him. Only the user can control the actions of the player. The player's current inventory is a lemon, a hairpin, a meat pie, and a wooden stake. Here is a description of the room, "You enter a lavishly decorated room lit by candlelight. In the center of the room is a jet black coffin. As you look at it you feel a shiver. There is a metal grate covering something on the wall. You also notice a bookshelf full of books, a portrait on the wall with 3 women in it, and a nightstand with a pewter jug on it." (the pewter jug contains humans blood). The player's first response is "examine bookshelf"

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You walk towards the bookshelf and examine it closely. You notice that the books seem to be very old and dusty, some of them look like they haven't been touched in years. You also see a few books that catch your attention, including a book with a red cover titled "Vampires and their Weaknesses", and a thick book with a black cover titled "The History of Transylvania".

What would you like to do next?
drink from jug on nightstand

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You pick up the pewter jug from the nightstand and take a closer look. You notice that the liquid inside is thick and red, with a metallic smell. You realize that it is human blood, and feel a wave of disgust and fear wash over you.

You can certainly try to drink from it, but it may have consequences. What would you like to do?
don't drink it. examine portrait.

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You move towards the portrait on the wall and examine it closely. The portrait depicts three women dressed in Victorian-era clothing. They have fair skin, dark hair, and a haunting beauty. Their eyes seem to follow you as you move in front of the portrait. You notice that the women look very similar to each other, as if they were sisters or even triplets.

What would you like to do next?
examine grate on wall

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You approach the metal grate and try to take a closer look. The grate is rusted and seems to be attached to the wall with some screws. You notice that there is a small gap between the metal bars, but it is not wide enough for you to reach inside.

What would you like to do next?
examine suit of armor

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You turn your attention to the suit of armor standing in the corner of the room. The armor is made of shiny metal and looks quite intimidating. You notice that there is a sword resting against the armor's left arm, and a shield hanging from its right arm.

What would you like to do next?
take sword

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You approach the suit of armor and take the sword from its left arm. The sword feels heavy in your hand, but also sturdy and well-crafted. You now have a sword in your inventory.

What would you like to do next?
use sword on grate

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You use the sword to try to pry open the metal grate, but unfortunately, it doesn't work. The sword is too big and heavy to fit between the metal bars, and you can't seem to find a good angle to apply enough force to loosen the screws holding the grate in place.

What would you like to do next?
use crowbar on grate

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You don't have a crowbar in your inventory, but you can look around the room to see if you can find one.

What would you like to do next?
use lime on grate

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You take the lemon from your inventory and try to use it on the metal grate, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. The lemon is not a tool that can help you in this situation.

What would you like to do next?
use the hairpin to pick the lock on the grate

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You take the hairpin from your inventory and examine the lock on the metal grate. It seems to be a simple lock, and you think that the hairpin could work as a makeshift lockpick.

You carefully insert the hairpin into the lock and try to wiggle it around. It takes a few attempts, but eventually, you hear a satisfying click as the lock opens. You have successfully unlocked the metal grate!

What would you like to do next?
open metal grate

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You take hold of the metal grate and pull it towards you. It creaks loudly as you open it, revealing a small window behind it. You notice that the window is covered with thick curtains, blocking any sunlight from entering the room.

What would you like to do next?
open curtains

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=NO, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You move towards the window and pull aside the curtains. As you do so, a bright beam of sunlight enters the room, illuminating the coffin in the center of the room. You notice that the sunlight seems to be causing the coffin to smoke and emit a foul odor.

What would you like to do next?
examine coffin

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=YES, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You move closer to the coffin in the center of the room and examine it closely. The coffin is made of a dark, glossy wood and is ornately decorated with intricate carvings of bats and other nocturnal creatures. You can hear a faint rustling sound coming from inside the coffin.

What would you like to do next?
open coffin, making sure to stand in sunlight

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=YES, Dracula Awake=NO, Dracula Dead=NO.

You approach the coffin and slowly lift the lid, making sure to stay in the sunlight. As you do so, you see a figure stirring inside, its eyes opening slowly. It is Count Dracula himself, awakened from his slumber.

Dracula's eyes lock onto you and he lets out a hiss, baring his fangs. You can feel his hostility and hunger emanating from him.

You have time to do one action before Dracula attacks you. What would you like to do?
pull out sword, make sure you are standing in sunlight

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=YES, Dracula Awake=YES, Dracula Dead=NO.

You quickly pull out the sword from your inventory and hold it in front of you, making sure to stay in the sunlight. Dracula hisses and recoils slightly, clearly affected by the sunlight.

You have time to do one more action before Dracula attacks you. What would you like to do?
attack dracula

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=YES, Dracula Awake=YES, Dracula Dead=NO.

You lunge towards Dracula with your sword, aiming for his heart. Dracula, weakened by the sunlight, tries to defend himself, but you manage to drive the wooden stake through his heart.

Dracula lets out a deafening scream and disintegrates into dust, leaving behind only his cloak and some other clothing. You have defeated Count Dracula!

Congratulations, you have won the game!

and here is an alternative solution

quote:

You have time to do one action before Dracula attacks you. What would you like to do?
IShall RiseAgain
2 / 2
squirt lemon juice in dracula's eyes

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=YES, Dracula Awake=YES, Dracula Dead=NO.

You quickly take the lemon from your inventory and squeeze its juice into Dracula's eyes. He lets out a loud hiss of pain and recoils, giving you a brief moment to act.

What would you like to do next?
IShall RiseAgain
push him into direct sunlight while he is blinded

Player Incapacitated or Dead=NO, Window Open=YES, Dracula Awake=YES, Dracula Dead=NO.

You take advantage of Dracula's momentary blindness and quickly push him towards the open window. As he stumbles towards the sunlight, he lets out a bloodcurdling scream, his skin beginning to sizzle and smoke as he is exposed to the light.

Dracula claws at the air, trying to escape the sunlight, but it is too late. His body begins to disintegrate into dust, his scream fading into a final, pitiful gasp.

Congratulations! You have defeated Count Dracula and saved the world from his evil reign. You have completed the game.

I'm going to do some work and see if I can make something that will feed chatGPT knowledge about each room in a text adventure game, and see if I can make a full fledged game from it. I should probably move the flags to the bottom due to how LLMs work.

The problem is that it has a (iirc) 4000 character "memory" and in my experience is great at selling the illusion for a few minutes but quickly falls apart. It won't even consistently use a format after a handful of back-and-forth interactions.

e: The only way I can see it properly working for an adventure game is to create a 4000-character formula that can be rerun again and again and return a new result each time, without ever referencing previous results. Like a formula for creating a room within parameters. You could specify a set of characters, objects, puzzle elements, exits, etc. that might be in any given room, the backstory of the characters, pre-written dialogue tree, etc. Then each new room you go into is a variation on that formula.

Well, my idea is that the game itself will handle remembering stuff and the conversation will be reset for every room entry and exit.

This is pretty cool, are you doing it entirely through ChatGPT? I've been working on something sorta similar with the ChatGPT API but more focused around building more traditionally structured game content with the generative text and it's going pretty well. Right now I'm working on generating random oregon-trail type events for any arbitrary location, and it's such an interesting design challenge. I had to first generate the locations, then determine stats for them, and now I'm working on building a list of hazards (falling rocks, etc) that will be turned into random events in locations that are considered hazardous. It's such a wild design challenge, because you have to somehow wrap your head around turning infinite procedural options into something concrete to use it for traditional videogame mechanics. There is this real diamond shaped thing to it, where you can start with a simple prompt, inflate it out into a world with points of interest, and then crunch that generated point of interest down into concrete statistics that the game can use for normal gameplay purposes.

Edit: There is a real interesting tradeoff though. Like the structured approach lends itself well to integrating traditional gameplay mechanics, but you're also crunching the actual interaction back down to normal videogame levels. A game entirely within ChatGPT has that benefit of having a lot more room for emergent gameplay.

The interesting thing is that for this long video generation https://msra-nuwa.azurewebsites.net/#/ that I linked before, it appears that creating something similar a story board is part of the process, so it wouldn't be surprising if movies or at least actual scenes can be generated from storyboards at some point soon.

Now I have a whole site (links to Tumblr) and Twitter and Instagram dedicated to art and worldbuilding for a story which didn't even exist back then. Today I also "launched" the site (posted about it on Reddit and did a small Blaze of one of the Tumblr posts). Also later today, I start working on the screenplay.

There isn't enough context to remember a whole game, so the player can push the story in weird directions, and it won't be able to keep track of everything. This method gives the game focus, and ensures it won't start forgetting information.

The photo of Phan Thi Kim Phuc haunts this image- so there is some insight into what it was and wasn't trained on.

Ted Chiang has a short story in which all scientific research is conducted by advanced meta-humans, whose findings filter down to unaugmented humans by what is essentially exegesis.

I think in the coming years cultural production will have a demand for people who can sift out the artifacts of human misery from machine-generated products.

ITV's full-on promos of Middle Eastern teams evoking Abu Gharib human pyramids. A movie studio needing to untangle its marquee fight scenes from Russo-Ukrainian war crime footage. An ad agency hires culturally literate people to spot and excise allusions to mass murderer head shots in their L'Oreal ads.

Or possibly no one will care. Phan Thi Kim Phuc is just grist for the mill.

I wish J.G. Ballard was alive.
