I've decided to pick up the recaps of the OG Dominic Deegan because I have nothing better to do and I'm a horrific masochist.

Chapter 25: Built to Resist (cont.)

Last time, the village of Lynn's Brook was destroyed in an anime fight between Celesto and The Infernomancer, and TIM revealed his new look:

It's really stupid.

Seriously, look at this poo poo.

lol at crazy rachel and her perfectly spherical boobs ignoring the danger! so crazy!

TIM drops the dumb scribblespeak, likely because Mookie got bored of it.

Thankfully we're spared from tentacle porn. It took me a sec to figure out what was going on in panel 4: Rachel's headbutting TIM, but because there's no sense of motion it looks like she gave him a bloody nose by phasing out of existence. Then I got angry because I realized Mookie did the same thing for Legacy's fight scene. loving hell.

Greg remembers he's an anime character and punches the poo poo out of TIM accordingly. The panel borders make me unreasonably angry -- use a ruler or something!

That's right, let a man take care of this before your fee-male emotions make things worse. You think I'm joking?

Rachel STILL tries to fight Celesto after seeing what he can do and gets her knee blown out. No one comments about this, implying she deserves it for getting in the way.

TIM tears his face off for shits and giggles and then this happens:

gently caress this I need a break.

Is it weird that I like the Greg punching TIM to pieces full page thing? His hips look weird, but I actually like him holding onto TIM's wrist after punching him so hard his body broke apart.

Has a Dragonball feel to it.

People say bigger is better.

But for the first time in my life, I think I've gone too far.
More happened in that one recap than through most of Legacy.

The villain is actually being fought on-screen! The characters communicate!

This was why Original Deegan was enjoyable to follow when you would get this much craziness in just one week.

It could stand to be a little more dynamic, and the technical work isn't quite there yet, but there's a definite promise to the work that makes the loving boring-rear end fights in Legacy that much more disappointing.

OG Deegan was basically him drawing the coolest moments from his favorite mangas, so the work was stiff and derivative and didn't quite work in the context of the story but it was action.

Rather than learn how to stage better flowing action he just, stopped doing scenes like that.

It's not high art, but it's a perfectly serviceable panel of a guy being punched to pieces. I know what's happening, I'm not confused how we got there from the thing that came before it... man Legacy has lowered my standards.

That third panel of the first comic just makes it. It's still funny if you remove it, but that panel included just makes it top tier.
The problem with og Deegan's art(just the one?) is that so many characters look alike, like Greg and stubble guy, if not for the stubble, I wouldn't have realized these were two characters. Of course, it's also been a year or two since I saw the preceding strips, so that may be a factor. At leas with Legacy, Mookie learned how to trace different peopledesign distinct characters.

It helps that Legacy only has about half a dozen recurring characters.

If the comic ever went to the Ink Witch Academy then we would be in trouble.

He still has that problem.

Remember in Legacy there have been multiple crowd scenes where people have pointed out that there are background characters that look exactly like Snout.

Rotten Red Rod

All the main Legacy cast and the vast majority of the background characters - when there are any - have exactly identical body proportions. Tall, thin, large breasts on the women. It's clear he's using the exact same references/traces for everyone.

That's the page before the all-text infodump page where Jacob says that "LUNA" is the friends we made along the way.

Chapter 25: Built to Resist (cont.)

TIM and Supergreg continue their anime fight. I love how Dex doesn't give a poo poo about Rachel's blown-out knee.

Dex's reaction to people getting gibbed is mild discomfort. Check out Celesto's massive package in panel 6.

I think we're supposed to be horrified by the carnage but it's all random nobodies so I don't care. TIM decides to wrap Greg up in a bunch of strings.

Greg's trapped in a Hellraiser situation and the strings are ripping him apart. Too bad it looks so comical. Luckily, TIM just wanted to rip a glowing orb out of Greg.

Turns out that orb was Greg's magic abilities. How? No explanation. Why did TIM need them for a new, EDGY BLACK gauntlet? No clue, other than for borrowing Celesto's Kamehameha attack. But wait! Dex is here to save the day!

I'm calling bullshit. Dex is resistant to magic which means healing magic doesn't work and something like a mind control spell is useless. Double edged sword, right? But a big gently caress-off laser beam? Get outta here. I don't care if it's charged particles or energy pulled from another dimension, you're not surviving that.

Dex confirms that poo poo hurt, yet he's undamaged. Whatever. Celesto saves his dumb rear end. You get the feeling Mookie watched The Thing before drawing this?

Literal spaghetti monster.

Celesto grabs the idiot baton with both hands and monologues instead of finishing off TIM. This is supposed to be Dex's redemption except all we know about his character is he was an addict and a wife beater (but only once!) and this sudden self-sacrifice isn't earned at all.

The fight unfolds as expected.

Celesto finally ends this fight with another Dragon Ball Z move.

what's amazing is mookie actually seems to be trying different things in DD even if they're ripped straight from his favorite anime and come out looking like garbage. There's no experimenting in Legacy besides playing with the brush tool in photoshop.

The pity with this story is that Dex had potential. I can believe a backstory of a fantasy sportsball player who turned to drugs to deal with the pain, got violent and is now struggling to prove to himself he's good while not dealing with his past. I would like to see where that character goes, so it's extremely Mookie that it goes instantly to ripping his face off and binning him.

lmao I'd forgotten Snout told his tale as "the Lemonhead guy ejected me" and not "the Lemonhead guy blew up the ghost that looked like one of my friends." What a self-centered tool.

There's so little thought put into these sequence of events. Greg's DBZ beams were supposed to be able to heal people in the vicinity, yet Rachel and the others remain injured in the end. Greg's powers got ripped out of him, yet Garrit seems to think Greg can still heal the injured. Greg's white magic is supposed to heal physical injuries, yet it's somehow fine to heal TIM's edgy gauntlet that shoots out demonic energy.

I know it's a fool's errand, but where are the characters standing in proximity to each other? Mohrgs is now having to walk over to Snout despite being in striking distance a second ago? This is like wonderland's chessboard desert. They just stand still and the panels move around them.
