It's kind of weird to me that porn is also technically illegal in Thailand and some of the bigger sites are blocked. You'll see on the news every few months about a couple being arrested for running an OnlyFans page as well.

I remember when I first moved here, I'd go to like a tech mall to look at video game peripherals or computer components and then dudes would casually walk up to you, pull a binder out of a trench coat, and flip through pages of pornographic VCDs for sale. It was kind of quaint really.

Very different than Taiwan where there are porn and sex shops on every street corner, but don't you dare look at a marijuana cigarette.

It's like how prostitution is illegal in Thailand and Taiwan, but is more or less openly practiced in certain zones.

I know there are certain porn sites out there that operate with Thai Bar girls, which begs the question:

If porn is illegal in Thailand, then how do those exist? Underground? That many bar girls performing for the same few sites, someone's gotta talk, right?

yeah they showed the larger trend behind this in about 2015, using science and science literacy. you can educate people on the fundamentals of science all you want, they can be highly literate - and they will still crowbar scientific principles around to support whatever politics they inject into their brains anyway. institutions of higher learning in the US are ""liberal"" only insofar as the university mindset in western societies revolved around learning latin and socratic debate, which were marks of liberal intelligentsia. you can find tons of colleges of science inside of these larger universities that are staffed by reactionary chuds nowadays since nobody cares about the classics anymore; they want a degree that will pay for itself since the gravy train of graduating with whatever to get into high society ended with the millennial generations.

and even in the case where you have a "liberal" science college, they still find that people who identify as strongly republican going into college will still deny climate change after getting a biology degree. they'll just cherry-pick scientific principles that support their view. similarly, far-leftist environmentalists won't acknowledge the massive benefit that nuclear power would objectively be and the massively reduced risk profile it shows versus pretty much anything else; they just cherry-pick the physics that suit their argument that it's too dangerous.

politics are pretty much immune to enlightening effects and it's not subtle. it isn't a coincidence that after respected social scientists started pointing this out, a lot of prominent science communicators (like neil degrasse tyson) started losing their minds and saying more and more blatantly anti-scientific poo poo. they realized it didn't matter. their entire lives are lies. if you do a timelapse of NGT's twitter sometime it's pretty hilarious how he just loving stops caring and gives up on his ideal of educating people around 2015. it's just constant pompous assertions that science is always correct and the thousand well-actuallys that made everyone hate him.

effectively the only thing that changes politics is life experience. even the death penalty stuff like you were talking about, most times that has been passed anti-democratically by parliaments that aren't worried about direct accountability despite the fact that their constituents hate it. when the death penalty was suspended in the UK in 1965 over 2/3rds of citizens were in favor of it. it was only after a generation passed and everyone realized that society wasn't going to crumble because you weren't murdering criminals that folks started to soften on it and came to generally disfavor it.

Omg Beijing transfer was super clowny, I had an hour for transfer because my flight incoming was late an hour.

But the whole process is just everyone rushing you when there’s no need to rush. Yes hurry up and be nimble, but don’t panick for the sake of panicking. Gates never close on time in China. Uggghh

Oh well least I didn’t need to kill time in Beijing airport.

Hongqiao works amazingly well if you're doing something that the designers envisioned. And horribly if you're not. I've experienced both multiple times.

Unfortunately, you have no way of knowing beforehand whether your particular gate / transit combo has the mandate of heaven, which is... inconvenient.

Last time I transferred at Hongqiao I had to go through security six times and wait 14 hours for my one hour layover.

Part of the misery of Chinese airports is they suck and you're also there for ages because as far as I can tell, 100% of flights in China are delayed. But they also will never tell you it's delayed so you're just standing there looking at the gate thing announcing your plane is on time for the departure four hours ago, with no way of knowing if it's going to be there soon or show up tomorrow.

In fairness to Chinese airlines it's not their fault, airspace in China is absurdly restricted. Those restrictions are from decades ago and have never been updated for the 500000000000% increase in air travel, so the airspace is so crowded that everything is constantly hosed.

Why they refuse to admit planes are delayed is a mystery. It's not just the boards won't update, the airline workers also won't answer questions.

Another reason airports suck in China is they're all designed and built as prestige/grift projects so they are these absurd, gigantic cathedrals that are nice to look at but completely nonfunctional for the humans who need to do things in them.

In some ways this is the most frustrating thing. Air travel has exploded in China in recent decades so within the last 20 years or so almost every airport in the country has either been built from scratch or completely, massively expanded. This was after we as human beings had figured out to design functional airports! A fair number of them were even designed by prestigious foreign architects!! Yet they're all inevitably terrible to actually use.

Places like LAX suck in part because they've been expanded piecemeal and are held together at the seams with duct tape by underfunded government agencies. China doesn't have those excuses but a lot of airports are nearly as bad anyway.

Very interesting conversation with a guy in my conference today who is Singaporean. We're talking about student research essays and we are talking about historical revisionism and nationalism, and I bring up the 1964 race riots and how that is part of Singapore's founding history, etc, and I showed him and essay my student wrote about the actions of the PAP during the events, Chinese vs Malay perspective, etc. The dude backs up in his chair when he sees the title. "oh noooo, we don't talk about this... if Lee was still alive this would never, ever talk about it this." Very interesting because he was talking a minute ago about how Japanese people don't know about WW2 events.

weird turn for the China thread but here we go:

quote:

During 2001–02, Glasser was the focus of an obscenity-based court case, People of the State of California v. Adam Glasser, et al. over the depiction of vaginal fisting in his 1999 video Tampa Tushy Fest 1.[2][6] The film won the "Best All-Girl Sex Scene – Video" award at the 2000 AVN Awards.[5] Glasser pleaded not guilty to violating California Penal Code Sections 311.2(a), "production, distribution or exhibition of obscene matter"; and 311.5, "advertising or promoting matter represented to be obscene", better known as "pandering obscenity". Then before trial, he reached a plea agreement in which his company pleaded "no contest" to "creating a public nuisance", and paid a $1,000 fine, in exchange for all other obscenity charges being dropped against the defendants.[6]
