I don't think anyone of note actually expects Ukraine to invade Crimea, and certainly not this year even if somehow the tides of the war turned almost by magic overwhelmingly in Ukraine's favor. Yes, Russia preps for it and deters it, cause what else would they do? But there won't be any offensive on Crimea beyond maybe irregular warfare or air and missile attacks. Ukraine has a lot of options still on the table without trying to retake Crimea by land or sea (with what navy?).

Maybe with this very post I have kicked off a counter-attack into Crimea.

I'd say it's not so much about assaulting Crimea as driving to the sea of Azov and thus cutting that route of supply.

i had no idea this movie existed. i watched a trailer (no sound) and came away with the impression is the movie is mostly sick kung fu crossbow action and people staring at each other pensively

it looks like the whole movie takes place in the middle east? seems like a move faithful reproduction would have him returning home to do battle with various jodies and bad actors taking over his small midwest hometown

I watched "Robin Hood" (2018) last night, a movie that begins by recreating the siege of Fallujah with medieval weaponry - English marines of the Third Crusade checking corners with longbows, and then having to take cover from a rapid fire bolt thrower that they then have to outflank like it was Brecourt Manor. A shoulder-mounted crossbow bazooka is a stand-in for an RPG-wielding insurgent, and the crusaders have to use a flaming arrow to call down trebuchet fire like it was a danger-close artillery strike.

The action eventually shifts Jolly Olde England, where they recreate the Matrix lobby shootout scene with crossbows, Robin Hood does the medieval equivalent of shooting out all of the floodlights during a heist by snuffing out candles with arrows, and the arrows themselves are frangible arrows that are fired from a "street"-type longbow that he holds sideways because that's how Jamie Foxx taught him to do it.

Oh and the Sheriff of Nottingham did 9/11.

the movie's politics feel like it should have been made maybe 10 years earlier, where it would have fit in with films like Green Zone and Shooter when it was in vogue to criticize the war in Iraq and American foreign policy in general as bad and wrong

I say this because the Sheriff of Nottingham is written very obviously as a Bush analogue: he wields the "we fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here" narrative when justifying the Third Crusade, and the Crusade itself engages in all sorts of right-wing excesses such as torturing prisoners and weaponizing pig's blood as an islamophobic curse

Robin of Loxley himself ends up where he is because he's drafted into the war, and then he's falsely declared dead, and then his manor and land is seized to finance the war, so he comes home to nothing.

to the movie's credit, Robin is explicitly shown as throwing all the money he steals back to the people living in slums, and he even says "wouldn't we all want to some wealth redistribution?" when rousing the peasantry to revolt against the Sheriff. He uses his manorial home (after reclaiming it) as a base of operations throughout the movie, but the implication by the end is that he leads the people of Nottingham into founding a different settlement, in Sherwood, using the treasures looted from the Sheriff's coffers

there's also a really neat subplot about the guy who moves in on Maid Marian after she's been told Robin of Loxley was killed in the war - Will positions himself as the nascent populist leader of the peasants, but when push comes to shove, refuses to join in on Robin and Marian's revolt because it's going to ruin his carefully crafted political career. Marian gives him a great dressing-down that fits in very well with a figure like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez falling into the trap of careerism now that they actually hold office

Donetsk and more than a few frontline settlements lost their pumped water from Ukrainian mysterious NATO-origin artillery fire last year so this is probably going to be the first time the residents got fresh water besides the water tankers that's been delivering water.
