Some quotes and tidbits from Yle, our National Broadcasting Company.

Yle posted:

Finland's membership is a direct result of Putin's actions, says UK's foreign secretary

According to Great Britain's foreign secretary James Cleverly, Finland joining Nato is a direct result of the aggressive politics of Russia's Vladimir Putin, and its illegal invasion of Ukraine.

- A new member joining our defense alliance is a positive thing and one we will celebrate. After that we must quickly change our focus to Sweden, and work hard on getting Sweden into this group of allies and friends.

According to Cleverly, Nato has never before in its 74 year history been as important and united as now.

Canada's foreign minister: with Finland Nato is stronger than ever before

According to Canada's foreign minister, Mélanie Joly, Nato is stronger than ever before after Finland joins it.

Joly, who participated in a conference of Nato's foreign ministers emphasizes that Canada was the first country to ratify Finland and Sweden's applications.

According to Joly Finland and Sweden, as arctic countries, have much in common with Canada.

She appeals to Turkey and Hungary to ratify Sweden's application. The parliaments of the two countries have not yet approved Sweden as a member of Nato.

Joly also had a message to Russia's president Vladimir Putin.

- If he truly desires peace, all he has to do is to leave Ukraine.

And of course what would the day be without a little threats from the innocent little guys next door.

Russia threatens actions because of Finland's Nato membership

The Russian president's spokesman Dmitri Peskov says that Finland's Nato membership violates Russia's security, says Reuters. According to Peskov, Nato's structure is a direct threat against Russia. He claims that Finland joining Nato will force Russia to retaliate in order to guarantee its security.

There's still one step left: depositing the document with the US State Dept, but they arranged it so that Anthony Blinken will be the recipient and the exchange takes place at NATO HQ in Brussels. This will happen 30 minutes from now, and the second he receives the paper, Finland becomes an official member.

Its to demonstrate the 'powerlessness' of the ICC decision and how Russia can 'flaunt' it.

In reality, it just demonstrates how feeble Russia's tit-for-tat responses are.

They don't really think its genuinely going well, hence why they need this as a morale boost, or at least provide new content for their disingenuous shitposting. They can treat it as a victory 'on paper', in that they have taken a town that they have been declaring as an objective for many months.

Its of course a pyrrhic victory, with the Russians exhausting themselves against a single target for months on end (including wearing down Wagner) and using up a lot of the manpower gained during the mobilization. The opportunity costs are tremendous, and it leaves them in a weaker position than before.

But it can be framed as a 'victory' that their propaganda can use, even if its not a particularly credible one.

In reality though, if this is literally all you have been able to achieve after spending so much blood and treasure, and you have nothing else to celebrate - things really ain't going well.

Meanwhile on a more serious topic, again from Yle.

Journalist: Jyri Tynkynen
Original link: https://yle.fi/a/74-20025657

Yle posted:

Lapland's Border Guard is preparing for increased harassment and is awaiting information on possible changes in their tasks related to national defens.

So far co-operation with Russia is going well, says Lapland's Border Guard commander. At the same time, at the border preparations are underway for an increasingly difficult task.

Finland's Nato membership will change the Finnish Defence Force's operations in Lapland as well as through the entire country, says the commander of Lapland's Border Guard, colonel Jarkko Alén.

According to Alén, the Nato membership won't change the Border Guard's main tasks of securing the border and monitoring it, as they are civilian duties executed by law enforcement. Instead, Nato will have an effect on what kind of military duties the Border Guard might be called to take on in the future.

- Those details are being worked out together with the Defence Forces. We are a big part of Finland's defence systems, and I believe this will be the case in the future, says Alén.

Finland's Nato membership might make our eastern border more restless, in case Russia decides to try to cause problems for Finland. An example can be found in 2016, when the Salla and Inari border crossings faced as many as several tens of asylum seekers in a day.

The amount of border guards is being increased

The commander of Lapland's Border Guard says that the Border Guard are prepared in today's security situation for serious, expansive and lengthy disturbances at the border. Alén specifies that the disturbances in practise might involve illegal entries into the country.

At its worst, these may be intentional acts by a foreign government, which has been documented for instance at the borders of Belarus and EU countries. So far there are no indications of this taking place, however.

- I have to say that currently Russia's border agencies are handling their responsibilities on the eastern borders security quite well, and the situation is peaceful, Alén says.

In any case, the Border Guard is aiming to increase the amount of guards at the eastern border by 100 man-years by 2026.

It's kinda interesting, but not really that surprising to think that Finland's eastern border is probably under threat of government agents entering the country illegally quite frequently. Russia's done it in plenty of other places, so why not here as well? That together with all the other shady poo poo they've been doing, like the purchases of land near important military targets by Totally Honest Everyday Russians.

Are you telling me engaging in the largest urban meat grinder in Europe since WW2 has been an extremely cost ineffective use of resources?
