Man I still remember watching movies as a kid on an old Betamax player. IIRC the main reason it failed was the tapes could only hold like 60 minutes of film & despite being better quality than VHS, the VHS standard had more space (90-120min) so people gravitated towards that. Almost reminds me of the whole HD-DVD vs BluRay standards when they first got popular.

I think it was Betamax was 60-90 minutes, while VHS was 90-180 minutes. Betamax was long enough for most movies to be released on a single tape, but not long enough to record a movie from TV broadcast (which were usually 2-hour blocks, IIRC).

Movies were secondary. One of the biggest early uses for video tapes was timeshifting sports games, and those tend to be longer than a standard Betamax tape.

Recording times for an L-750 Beta cassette at the three availability speeds:

Beta I: 90 minutes*
Beta II: 180 minutes
Beta III: 270 minutes

Picture quality improved at the faster speeds. The last prerecorded Beta I bought was Total Recall; I watched it and a prerecorded VHS copy on the same TV with equivalent VCRs, and the Beta was clearly better.

*Most VCRs didn’t have Beta I.

Just picked up a VIC-20 and it looks and feels loving mint (aside from the adhesive on the badge having failed). It works at least to the degree I could test it.

This is a real shame as it smells of mold (it came still in plastic, in the original box) along with the PSU, RF-modulator, and antenna cable which means I'm going to have to open it up :( At best, it'll just take waiting for Summer and letting it air out in the front yard. At worst... how does one treat a motherboard with possible mold? Spirits would at least be safe, right? But would it kill anything if there's something to kill? Can you safely (for the motherboard) ozonate the motherboard in a container?

e: Shame it isn't one with the COOL KEY LEGENDS. ee: Paperwork in the box says it was originally bought in 1984. I think the late date matches the keyboard?

No ozone. Ozone is like hydrogen peroxide, but in gaseous form. Doing it once probably doesn't hurt, but you're essentially speedrunning the aging process with it.

Demineralized water and isopropanol are both fine. Ethanol denatured with methanol is also fine, but avoid the one denatured with ketones (ketonatus).

Avoid getting liquid inside any coil (like in a modulator) and mechanical assemblies (like key switches)

yeah i was gonna say holy gently caress don't use ozone, & in my experience iso is alright but you wanna minimize the water content

i'm pretty sure there's some kind of substance you can seal it up with which will absorb smells, and it might be better than baking soda, but i don't remember what it is

Oh gently caress the keys is going to be the hell of it, aren't they? At least there's no foam in them... or is there? I guess I have my Summer vacation cut out. At least I have a veranda I can work on if (when) it rains.

Dumping a bunch of Donoteat in the bin bag (where I put it) would dry it out at least. Mold doesn't do too good without moisture. It's odd that I didn't see any corrosion on the metal parts visible through the ports.

e: I just realized I do have a bottle of actual mold-remover. I'll have to check with the manufacturer if it's OK to use with plastic/styrofoam/cardboard (uhh I don't think so)/components/PCBs but I guess also ask if they have something that works and then order a uhh sample bottle for testing purposes. And some protective gear because the stuff I have has hella warning squares.

I of course opted to keep it. He was so proud of his HP calculator he would never leave it at work, opting instead to bring it home so nobody could steal it from him.

Now I just need to learn RPN so I can actually use the thing.

IIRC the 11-c was $90 in the early 80s and it was a major, major purchase but I eventually caved and bought one before going to college. Probably literally the most useful purchase I’ve ever made. I dont know how many hundreds of hours I used it.

I do remember I always had subroutine A programmed to solve quadratic equations. Maybe I still do, no idea how static the memory is.

Ladies.
Do college students still have to buy scientific calculators? It was a rite of passage in the 90s, but hell, apparently kids aren’t even learning cursive so who the hell knows.

Every semester my dad would give me a blank check made out to the UNT bookstore, and every year I would add a $150 calculator to the purchase, then return it for cash the next day.

OK, so, to recap: OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGY: scientific calculators, cursive, paper checks, textbooks, University of North Texas, parents.

TI sells over 90% of graphing calculators in the USA and has an incredibly captive market since they’re always on the approved list for standardized tests.

The issue is that parents are gonna complain if they have multiple children with 3 years between the kids, and they can't re-use the same calculator for multiple children.
Not an issue for the non-graphing conventional scientific ones like the Casio FX-82 series because those are like 15 euro. But for an €100-150 graphing calculator it starts to hurt if you gotta buy a new calculator just because the school books are desgined for a different one.

On my high school (15 years ago) i had to use a Casio FX-8960. I think the school switched to the Texas Instruments one later, but then back again to Casio.

Just this week I dug out my TI-84 from 2005 and gave it to a 16 year old because their high school required a TI-84 and all the stores here were sold out. Looks like you can still sell them all day on ebay for $40. I mean good on TI for keeping a standard for school calculators, but at this point all the kids have Chromebooks. Surely there is a graphing web app or something that these could be replaced with.

Once I got to college I found a TI-89 at a thrift store and it was a revelation because it could differentiate.

The keys and the plastic parts of the case can be cleaned in the sink with regular dish soap and water. People clean PCBs in the same way, in the sink with dish soap and a soft brush., but never tried this myself.

For just general de-stinking I have heard that putting the stinky item in a closed container with regular grilling charcoal works. My friends bough a used car that smelled like the previous owner's dog, even after cleaning and vacuuming. So they put open bags of grilling charcoal in the back seat and left the car alone in the sun for a few days and the coal soaked up the stink.

I don't particularly dislike the ti83, I bought one for high school in the late 90s and used it for pre-engineering in 2009-2010 without any issues, even though it looked like an antique compared to the newer ti84+ that people were using then. Our books were mostly calculator-agnostic, which was nice. They had walkthroughs for both Casio and TI calculators, but after a certain point it was just expected that you'd know how to use the calculator for what you needed it to do.

I bought a Casio Classpad when I started on my Bachelor's and I don't regret that one bit, it was a lot easier to do more advanced calculus with than the ti83.
