I want to branch out and I'm going to stick with it.
There are a lot of birds called robins that are not very closely related. They're all passerines, but many are in totally different families. Because early bird namers were just like "red belly? Must be a robin."

When you consider how much animal taxonomy has had to be reorganized in the last 50 years, the people who came up with common names probably shouldn't be judged too harshly

Now she’s hosed. They know where she lives.
They’re just gonna hang around and gently caress with the kookaburras and magpies she plays with.

Offhand, they look like juvenile magpies, and they are very clever, and very imitative birds. Hopefully, they will all remember that playing with that fence is bad and dangerous, and they'll tell their chicks about it, and no-one else will get stuck.

Robins are one of the perfect beauties of winter in this part of the world. Most birds stop singing in winter, but robins have this most beautiful, thin, cold little song that persists for the whole season, like a stream that is close to freezing, but never does.

I liked the robin post.

It's autumn here in Australia, and the birds in the local forests are putting on absurd amounts of weight ahead of winter. Lookit these little orb dudes. I love them

grey fantail

eastern yellow robin

speckled warbler (possibly the most bird-name-ish bird name ever)

double barred finch

I dunno. The first one went right back to the fence the second it was freed. If I was a magpie and all my friends were stuck in that fence so eagerly, I would try it out too.

But honestly, how does that even happen? Did the owner spray that fence with magpie pheromones to attract all the magpies in the area, or is this Hitchcock situation where 300 more lurk off camera.

I can't find any recording of it, but European Robins have another, extremely secret, quiet song that they sing to their mate/potential mate, when they are very close to each other.
It's very lovely too, but incredibly quiet, you can only hear it from 2-3 feet away.
Their fledglings do a sort of echo-location thing, where they say "peep" increasingly rapidly as the parent gets closer, then they make a hilarious FIZZZ noise when they get fed.
I wuv Robins.

Clever birds can be extremely dumb when they are young.
I remember when we had a huge number of young starlings in the garden ( I know they aren't corvids, but intelligence-wise, they are similar), and one of them found a crack in the garden wall, and had a look at it, and I swear, 30-40 young starlings queued up to look at this one crack.
There was nothing there, there never was, but they all had to check for themselves.

If 30-40 starlings don't find anything after having a good old stare, there is definitely, absolutely nothing there. It was right at the bottom of the wall too, so each and every one of them had to do a little crouch to peek in and it was 100% adorable.
