Got the chance to pick some parts from an old Dell server, dating to ca. 2004 I'd guess Contained not one but two SCSI controllers, both had Ultra 320 cable harnesses – one was hooked up to two hard drives.  The Adaptec has a standard 50 pin IDC header on it so technically that should be SCSI-1 capable? The other was wired to this beauty:  Even managed to eject the tape it came with, though it does seem to desire cleaning.  Unfortunately that tape will need to be returned to the original owner, but should be possible to get some more. DAT72 is as you would expect a 36 GB tape, that apparently runs at a blazing 3 MB/s, fortunately the Ultra320 SCSI interface should be fast enough to handle it. Also grabbed the original Pentium 4 and 1.5 GB total of DDR2 ECC unbuffered memory across 4 sticks. The SCSI controllers are both PCI-X, so in principle I could perhaps put them in the G4 AGP, that's the only PCI-X system I have available. Guessing these things don't have PowerPC boot-ROMs on them but might be usable when booted into OS X?

Wow, I've never seen a UHF only TV. I guess they did that for cost savings since it's a manual knob and not a selector. I had a tv where the VHF knob had the VHF channels and then you turned it to to UHF and then used the UHF knob.

Oh cool - old PC server hardware is its own pool of weirdness. In related news, we're finally getting rid of a lot of old desktop PCs at work, and I quietly set aside the oldest one, a later Pentium4 with DDR2 and both PCI and PCIe; I found a SoundBlaster Live! and some yet-to-be-identified Ati card in the pile, grabbed a DVD writer drive, and I think I can dig up a floppy drive to complete the look. I wonder if I still have an ISO of XP with the bulk license we used at work built in?

If you want to convert the VHF signal of an Atari to UHF, you can probably get away with a non-linear amplifier stage, hooked up as a signal distorter. This will generate a bunch of harmonics that contain the original TV signal. You can tune into one of those. Hell, if you hook up a fast schottky diode right across the antenna output of the Atari, perhaps that will already generate enough distortion products for one to be picked up on UHF. Alternatively, see if you can find one of those 100MHz TTL oscillator cans, make a 'proper' 1 transistor mixer stage like in the tuners of UHF tvs or in those UHF to VHF converters (with a BFW92 or something) and feed it both the TTL oscillator signal (perhaps emitter coupled) and the Atari signal on the base. This will probably work as a mixer and put out the atari signal at 145, 245, 345, 445MHz etc (depending on the Atari's output frequency) and how non-linear the mixer is. What is the best way to literally wash a PC? I came across a sweet Gateway 2000 386DX/33 today that came out of a metal shop. It must have lived most of its life near some sort of wood saw, because its coated in sawdust. Also, being a metal shop, everything is covered in a thin layer of oil, so that means I cant just blow off the sawdust. I need to wash this machine, or ideally at least the motherboard, cables, chassis and faceplate. Also, I cant in good conscience turn this thing on while its full of flammable, bearing breaking oil-impregnated sawdust. I used to love old full-size towers like this when I was a youngin and they always seemed so out of reach to me. I'd like to bring this one back if I can, since I also have a lot of nostalgia for this design of Gateway 2000, as its when I really started paying attention to computers.

I don't see any reason you can't just use straight up dish soap and water with a soft brush, provided you give it a day or two to dry thoroughly before applying power. I've done that with dirty/corroded motherboards and a case isn't going to be more fragile. Anyone else feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

I think the washing videos I've seen also do a step of immersing it in IPA to make sure any remaining water gets flushed out

Unless you use distilled/demineralized water, there's going to be some amount of solids in the water that get left behind once the water evaporates. And they can still create conductive pathways that can short out stuff.

If it were mine, I'd plan on wholesale replacing the power supply. After that, I'd take the drives out, both HDD and removable media. Then, a first pass with a hose probably won't make the situation worse. Scrub scrub scrub. And yea, last step is probably a bath in isopropyl alcohol (not India Pale Ale, like I first thought when I saw "IPA").

I’ve done it with arcade pcbs as well… wash and scrub with soap and warm water in the sink Rinse it thoroughly Hang it up somewhere it can sit a couple of days Spray the gently caress out of it with 99% alcohol top to bottom Finally, Let it sit for the aforementioned couple of days

Things with interior crevices, like switches, are extra tough to dry out. Remove anything like that first if you can.

Parents are finally cleaning their house so I got to take home my Performa CD + Monitor, old-rear end SOCRATES interactive video system, a box full of old tapes, and my wonderful little 16" TV. I just learned Titan is still making neat stuff for the sega megadrive/genesis, like a 4 channel mod player for the machine that was famously only really able to play fm music since the fm and pcm audio hardware was connected to the z80 coprocessor that only had 8k ram to work with. Well, I haven’t gotten around to washing this PC yet but I did discover that it does not in fact have a 386 as the case badge implies, but it has a 486 DX4 100mhz, which is the fastest, most powerful 486 that intel ever made
