Oh yeah, speaking of Swtorista (for the umpteenth time), she's doing her annual birthday event this Saturday. Details here! Should be fun.

Regular single player content should never really give you trouble - certainly not if you're still working your way through the original planets. To be honest I'm not sure how good companions are at tanking nowadays because I always put them on either healing or DPS, but for a largely relaxed experience you'll generally want them to be healing you. If they can't keep up, I would recommend doing two things first:

1. Take a good look at their abilities bar to verify that all of their abilities are in fact enabled. If a little green blob is missing, right-click that ability to turn it back on. I don't think this is something story companions really suffer from, but when I've got HK-51 with me sometimes two of those abilities are disabled for whatever reason and it definitely makes him worse at healing (or dps, of course).

2. Buy your companion of choice a lot of gifts. Get one up to at least influence level 20. You can find out which gifts you should give to which companions here.

Apart from that, it's possible that your ability rotation is somewhat suboptimal. Have a look at Swtorista's basic class guides. And if at level 32 on Tatooine you're still walking around in gear meant for Ord Mantell, maybe get that fixed. Finding someone to do a few 2-player Heroics with you should quickly get you up to speed, but you can also find basic planet-appropriate gear at the starport's vendors or on the Fleet.

The majority of the information in this guide seems to be aimed at max level, which does leave me wondering about how much of it might actually be suboptimal at my level. Like (for TK sage) without that level 78 passive that makes Project do additional damage after Mind Crushing somebody is it even worth it to hit Project?

To be honest, if you have at least some idea of what you're doing it would be quite difficult to mess up any combat style's rotation at level 32 to such an extent that normal SP content is making life difficult for you. Similarly, gear should not matter much in those conditions either. But if you're having difficulty and the issue not with your companion, then I'd certainly be looking at improving your rotation and/or gear. Also, part of optimising your use of abilities is just in using as many in as short a time as possible of course (without running out of your combat style's equivalent of stamina/mana) - especially if you find yourself fighting to stay alive. Even if you can't max out your abilities' damage potential yet, you might be able to at least speed up your rotation to increase damage output.

Maybe we're not just a bunch of frak-ups after all.
Has anyone else been constantly crashing to desktop since the update? I had at least 5 while doing a couple of Hammer Station runs, then a couple after that.

Don't know about mouse acceleration, but a common issue is that the camera is too sensitive. Apparently it's sometimes just bugged out and can be remedied by opening Preferences/Controls, setting it to 0%, then 100%, then 0% again (hit Apply every time).

It's been solid for me, but I haven't done any FPs yet so that might have something to do with it. In any event, could be an issue with the new 64-bit executable. Keep an eye on this post, I guess.

My favorite of all time is Vanguard but every time I come back for a brief stint I make one of those, so looking for something different.

Right now I am leveling a Guardian which seems OK. Did I make a mistake making Juggernaut my secondary?

Maybe I’ll just make a smuggler and a commando and level them to 10 and see which one I’m vibing more.

Guardian and Juggernaut are the same class so yeah, you should have gone with something different as your secondary class.

All right, so! More tech developments: there's a new cloud test server (Shae Vizla) up until the 18th. It's primarily for the APAC region, but nothing's stopping you from logging on anyway if you're living on the other side of the globe. Conveniently, it'll be right there in the server selection screen if you log in on your account right now - no additional downloads or configuration needed! Note that you can copy an existing character straight to the Shae Vizla server via your SWTOR.com profile.

Anyhoo, if you do some stuff before the PTS closes again you'll get an Opal Vulptilla mount. Some more details:

quote:

This is a continuation of our effort to modernize and update the game with the focus to improve the player experience and optimize tech that is used by the team. Some of the benefits to this migration are:

  • This technology allows us to improve the overall player experience such as connectivity, ping, faster start up, and better in-game performance
  • Backend updates that are crucial to the continued health and stability of the game can be streamlined more efficiently
  • The resources required to maintain our current systems can be reallocated to focusing on enhancing the game experience
  • We will be able to leverage and integrate updated tech such as newer hardware, software, and graphics
  • Once finalized, SWTOR may be capable to extend its servers capabilities to reach new players

There are functionality benefits for both the players and the development team.

quote:

We will be granting the Opal Vuptilla Mount to players who achieve the following:

  • Log into the new server
  • Complete an Arena or Warzone PvP match
  • Complete a GSF match
  • Complete a Flashpoint

This may seem like a silly thing to want and probably be a lot more work than needed but I wish I could use different weapons/animations in different classes. Like iunno an assault cannon on a sniper or dual wield lightsabers for an assassin. Purely an aesthetic thing for me tbh.

It's been something people have wanted for years, but it would be an enormous programming undertaking. You'd have to design animations for every ability (even if you steal from other abilities, it still has to be programmed) and then you'd have to somehow balance weapon damage. It'll never happen.

My move is to just block them so the message changes to something like “[player] spits on thin air” or whatever the message is. I once had some edgelords slap me 100 times for suboptimal play in kuat drive yards and it was fun to watch them miss suddenly

Not as fun as playing with normal people but you opt out of that when you play swtor with randos

I tried Gunslinger and I just wasn’t vibing the cover mechanic. Rolled Scoundrel and liking it a lot more, plus the ability to swap to healing when I want to.

I’m 50 and still haven’t picked my secondary combat style though. Not sure what to go with.

I don't remember at what point that becomes a thing but the various defensive options being "I brought my own cover" and "now it has extension panels!" is just hillarious to me.

Awesome!
I got a Steam Deck awhile back and given that SWTOR's class mission is about as close to comfort food as I can get, it was one of the first things I setup. To my surprise, the whole thing works remarkably well.

To give a bit of an idea on how I've mapped everything:
  • The quickbar in the top-left corresponds to the directional pad.
  • The one on top is for L1/R1.
  • The one in the top-right is for B,X,Y(A is used for jumping).
  • L2/R2 are used for clicks, the trackpads are used for mouse movement.
  • Pressing the trackpad selects the closest enemy.
  • For the back buttons, L4 is for pressing ESC, L5 for pressing Z, and R4/R5 are used for the top two items on the quickbar on the right.
  • The left joystick is used for walking and strafing, whereas the right one is used for turning, similar to most console games. Clicking on the joysticks are also mapped to quickbar actions

Of course, I won't ever be able to participate in anything big, but so far, the experience is exactly what I've been needing. I'm only up to Level 20 so far, so I'm not sure how well this will continue to work as I get more powers, but I'm assuming that I'll be able to not run into too many issues with a healing companion. All I'm really interested in is going through some class stories again. The game works surprisingly well to pick up and quickly do a couple of quests in the story. I'm also using Steam Link on a regular basis to play on my television and it plays pretty relaxingly there as well. If you have a Steam Deck, I'd heartily suggest giving it a try.

Release my children! My hat is truly great and mighty.

Sooooooo it's been a little quiet recently as Galactic Season 4 and PvP Season 2 have just been rolling along, but things are happening! Maybe. If nothing else, you have two more days to log in for another droid pet. Go on then, you know you want to.

Possibly more exciting, though, is the livestream about update 7.3 planned for this Wednesday (3 May) at 1 p.m. CT/6 p.m. UTC! They'll be talking about the update's "story elements and other content". 7.3 will apparently bring more class balance changes and economic credit changes, but apart from that and continuing the main story where 7.2 left off, it's anyone's guess right now what else it might include.

Release my children! My hat is truly great and mighty.

All right, live stream's finished. You can rewatch it here if you like (disregard that it's mislabelled "7.2 Game Update Livestream", this is the 7.3 one).

First things first: there's a new code, LotsSahar, which you can redeem for a very nice Sa'har Stronghold poster. Be sure to do it before 18 May! Similarly, if you log in between tomorrow (4 May) and the 18th, you will get a new boxy droid pet! Wheeeee !!

More materially, from 7.3 (which will supposedly be ready "soon") we can expect the following:
  • More solo story content that involves you returning to Voss. It'll take place in an entirely new area. Although it won't be as big as Ruhnuk, it's apparently big enough to include side missions. There'll also be new achievements, new Voss-type decorations and more modern (detailed) versions of Voss-type armour sets. Here's a little video: https://twitter.com/SWTOR/status/1653825734966640643?cxt=HHwWhoCw0cvvyPMtAAAA
  • A new Flashpoint, also taking place on Voss. Unlike every Flashpoint since the Shadow of Revan expansion, though, it will tie into the main story but not be required to progress the plot. In that sense it's more of a classic optional Flashpoint, although it will come in Story as well as Veteran and Master Mode varieties.
  • More PvP medals/points tweaks. Being involved in the action around objectives will yield bigger rewards than before.
  • More substantive credit economy changes. Socialism is coming to your galaxy far, far away! Also the GTN will be improved in various ways and start offerinig actual market data so get out your spreadsheets I guess.
Also, not necessarily part of 7.3 as such but they talked about it so may as well mention it:
  • PvP Season 3 will start on 18 July (one month after PvP Season 2 ends) and bring us some more rad armour.
  • New Cartel Market items, natch.
  • The Nar Shaddaa Nightlife Event will return on 11 July.
