Spike is a broken person who is so closed off to his own feelings he'd pretty much rather die than confront them. Which kinda fits the conservative ethos, I must admit

I think the trick with role models is that celebrities, anime characters, and comic book superheroes are not actually good role models. Good role models are people you live amongst and who can show you how to live a kind, gentle, giving, rewarding and charitable life. Normal people who lead brave, creditable lives in mostly small but important ways.

But what do I know

I was gonna say Batman is fine, no killing, just the crippling people thing, but I guess he is still a bajillionare and probably does do some charity stuff, but we are still living in a mansion with a butler and making bespoke jets and stuff. Could give more.

Maybe there is nothing bad about spider-man? I don't know enough. At least he seems to live modestly.

Reminds me, I wish I could find it but a couple of years ago someone wrote a twitter thread that was a concept for, for lack of a better term, 'a progressive Batman movie', that actually addresses the criticisms that he's a rich guy beating up criminals and does something interesting with it. Does anyone remember what I'm talking about? I'm having trouble finding it but it was awesome.

For fictional/mythical-historical characters as good masculine role models you have that dude who started the House of Telcontar.

You know, the twenty-sixth King of Arnor, the thirty-fifth King of Gondor, and the first High King of the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor, King Ellesar, Strider, or whatever you call him. Aragon.

Frigging Cinema Therapy did a grand episode on non toxic masculinity that's real good that stars him.

Also, the woodcutter Gotz from Harvest Moon: Back to Nature.

Yes, but the police are really loving lazy and way too murdery anyway. So it's for the best. "Sorry Batman, I know you did the right thing, but the law is the law so I'm just going to look away for a second and- oh no! He swished away to his ridiculous custom billionaire battle car and headed off towards Wayne mansion! Can never pin him down. Okay, time for lunch."

Like, do you want a cop to dump their entire gun into your back as you flee or do you just want Batman to break your leg, when he could stomp your spine, but chooses not to?

I know who the better male role model is.

I mean my dad was never around and I did sports but my coaches all sucked because I was a weird skinny kid so I was either poo poo on by them or just flat out ignored. Honestly if it wasn't for getting involved in the climbing community right when I got to college I was pretty much the perfect target for Jorp because I was angry at being ignored or targeted by adults that should have been mentoring me and his message is one that I legit would have been drawn to 25 years ago

does universal healthcare exist in the batman universe or if he breaks your leg are you on the hook for twenty thousand dollars if you are an uninsured freelance henchman for the local bad guy, whereas if a cop shot you to death at least your family might have a chance of getting something via a gofundme

It's not too hard for me to imagine considering I had a father, a grandfather, and two uncles that weren't fit to be role models, and teachers that I only had an antagonistic relationship with because I'd already learnt by then that the supposed authorities in my life weren't worth listening to.
Worse than the absence of these figures is often the presence of them.

my grandfather was a vaccinologist and i realize, now that i'm in my mid 40's and survived a pandemic (so far), that he would have been a great role model but when i was a child i thought all that poo poo was boring.

also he ate gross stuff like cottage cheese and prunes all the time and viewed pizza as an extravagance one should only eat once a year, which as a child also seemed like some sort of red flag.

IIRC, it's the moment he calls Buzz "a coward and a liar" that he hauls off and hits him. That particular c-word is like the magic fightin' word for a lot of people. Like how the entire McFly family can't handle being called 'chicken'.
