Firewatch-likes are probably one of my least favorite genres… but I’m gonna play The Invincible for the art style alone. The fact that it’s got a bunch of critical decisions with branching narratives makes me hope I’ll be somewhat more engaged with the gameplay, not just looking around for the next doodad to interact with to click use/look on to make the story continue.

I don't know if I would call firewatch-likes a genre and also that game doesn't really look like firewatch much at all.

Bugblatter
Aug 4, 2003

I don't mean "genre" quite that literally, but Firewatch is what every preview I've seen has compared the game with.

But narrative branches are already a massive departure from Firewatch, so it could just be poor journalism.

Nah, I was just typing that while the guy's in the video were describing it as being like Firewatch, so that's what came out.

Wrapped Dead Space. That was pretty cool; I'd play a DS2 remake if they put one out. Very cool graphics/physics tech and sound design.

I feel like I'm in a rut, stuck a bunch of hours into a bunch of different games and not really motivated to finish any of them. Usually that means I'm just fishing in the wrong genre, but I can't for the life of me figure out what to play.

Yeah, I often get like that, too, especially when I've bought too many games at once and they're all sitting there on the drive yelling at me in unison. It's kind of been like that for a month now. Usually what it means is that I need to read a book or do some writing or clean the domicile or whatev, like when I just feel drained from staying up too late or the lack of light in early spring.

So yeah, last week I finished a book and did spring cleaning, finished taxes, grabbed a reasonable small pile of movies from the collection that I'd not gotten to and resolved to watch 1 per week. I downloaded The Surge and played for about 30 mins, seems deece! I pulled Stranger of Paradise off the shelf and slapped priority back on finishing that. Afterwards I think I'll spend a few days with Ghostwire when the free patch drops. I also started a new character in Elden Ring, beat Margit, and popped up to Raya Lucaria (think I'll save the rest for later when DLC drops).

I might try to re-pot my plants before Burning Shores comes out in 12 days, and between all this and work...it's all I can do! May/June will prolly be used for Live A Live, Tactics Ogre, or Resi 4 if my friend finishes up with it soon, and maybe the new Amnesia game. When the end of June rolls around I am going to lose track of reality with FF16 and any game caught in its wake that isn't named Armored Core VI or Factions II will be utterly annihilated.

Thank you for reading my liveblog. :blastu:

I'm in a similar situation. I've been staying on top of most of the new releases, having finished up Wo Long and Resident Evil 4 recently so I'm starting some smaller indie games on my backlog and just gonna try to burn through as many of them until I get buried with Horizon dlc, final fantasy pixel remasters and live a live.

After that I have Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy 16 and just waiting for dates on future games like Armored Core 6 or Final Fantasy 7 Reunion.

I am looking forward to Ghost Trick and We Love Katamari this summer too.

Actually quickly reviewing a list of games coming out we really don't have a lot of dates for anything past June.

You can probably go cheaper, but I got one of these to replace my crappy old USB HDD adapter for cloning and stuff. Worked great for moving files around, anyway.

Firewatch-likes are when you have some Interactive Fiction along with the walking

BitBasher
Jun 6, 2004

You've got to know the rules before you can break 'em. Otherwise, it's no fun.

On a related note someone a while back asked about magnetic USB3 adapters for their PSVR2 and I didn't see any replies. I picked up This one from Amazon a couple weeks ago and it works flawlessly. I just leave one end stuck in my PS5 and the other stays on the headset cable and it works like a champ. It comes off easily but has never detached accidentally.

Yeah, I figured they were just using the term as genre shorthand because you're talking to someone on the radio while exploring an unfamiliar environment or whatever, using walking-sim or Frictional-esqe mechanics. The real draw here is the cool art direction and that it's directly based off of one of Stanislaw Lem's novels.

Unironically love this post. Especially timely cause I keep buying poo poo then not playing it. SF6, Diablo IV, The Last Spell, both of the Vaporum games (shoutout to the very few grid dungeon crawlers we got these days btw), upcoming Front Mission 3 remaster whenever the hell that is, like man we are so spoiled for choice and I gotta admit it’s kind of a mixed blessing.

Meet Your Maker's onboarding is rough, it throws a lot at you all at once. "Collect genmat to level your five specialist advisers so you can process them to level the chimera for cells, parts, and synthite." Uh alright can I make maps now. I'm enjoying it now that I have my head wrapped around the progression system and made a decent map. The level building is really well balanced between letting you be evil but preventing bullshit maps. I've only seen one map out of a few dozen that seemed deliberately unbeatable using a trick that should be patched out. Exploring maps is always tense and fun. Watching recordings of people playing my maps rules. Needs a way to play your friends maps. Neat little game, impressive for being built entirely around user generated content. I'm not sure how long I'll last on the service game grind but as a PS+ freebie I'm happy with it.

Getting back into the driver's seat of Stranger of Paradise is humbling. I left my save right outside of the Lich bossfight, so I had to completely teach myself the game all over again. Took me about a dozen tries but I downed his rear end in massive Jack fashion. Feels extremely good to be able to offload sprint and dodge actions to the paddles, and I am zoom-zoom-zoomin like a zolom in these fights. SoP's combat is just so loving ace. Battle-wise it totally looks as if it was one of the combat prototypes for FF16 that they didn't go with but ended up using features from, just the way combos chain into each other, the mobility and brutality, job switching (Eikons), the way companions are employed, etc.

Wild to think of Final Fantasy games approaching the Sekiro/Ninja Gaiden tier of fun, balance, and intricacy in the hardcore action game genre.

I played a couple hours of Super Meat Maker. Tough but fair. You play a couple maps, and you start to get a sense of the common tricks, and then someone will nail you with some unbelievable bullshit. I wish the grappling hook were less sticky.

I bought a 4500 part map and have managed to use well over half of it on making a dope looking base and an absolutely obnoxious labyrinth. It's kind of hard to do a maze because of the harvester, but I front loaded the first room with a bunch of traps to hopefully either kill the harvester or make the player lose track of it. After that it's pretty chill but the path to the genmat is windy as hell and all of the decoy paths look legit and usually end with traps. Gonna spend the remaining 1000 or so parts on making it hell to get out of.
