We should all be so honored. If you cannot carcinize during your lifetime, you can at least lend your life force to assuring its continuance.

They used to call me tricky-kid, I lived the life they wish they did.

Radiolab did another episode on crabs.

Features a better take on the "everything crab soon" idea as well as an absolutely adorable story about a regular lady that somehow figured out how to successfully breed hermit crabs en masse.

I didn't realize that most hermit crabs are crabnapped and shipped across the world

The lady is a delight and really it's a heartwarming story of an empty nest mother who becomes crab mamma.

I'm scared to look, I just don't have room right now for all the crabs I'd inevitably need to buy :negative:

my wife has been working on a series of ceramic sculptures inspired in part by the cabinets of curiosity. That article is a decent intro. They were put together by wealthy european (especially french) men in the late 17th century into the early 19th, who were interested "natural philosophy" which was basically "science" in a time before a more formalized scientific process and community had developed. They'd have parties and soirees and invite their wealthy friends over and chat about the stuff they'd collected. Sometimes they would have lectures on a particular subject and they'd write papers on their stuff. Their lifestyle as idle rich people allowed them the funds and time to pursue their interests: some were little more than collectors, but others put real time and effort into documenting and trying to understand the stuff they were accumulating.

A ton of it was stolen from the colonial possessions of their countries. Countless cultural artifacts were taken from indigenous people and put on display half a world away. Some of the stuff was fraudulent. A lot of it was improperly preserved, and some important specimens were basically destroyed due to bad treatment and handling. When these rich people died or went broke their collections were usually broken up or sold off piecemeal, so few remain intact. But overall these things were a stepping stone on the path towards an international scientific standard and community that would follow.

The cabinets themselves were often ornate and there's a few examples still preserved. My wife and I saw this one in Paris a few years ago, the librarians were nice enough to let me photograph it.

These are not the original contents, but a catalogue of the original stuff does exist, and they let me take photos of that too:

This right here is an example of why I came to these forums. Sure, there’s a lot of jokes. But also a lot of people who share stuff that they are fascinated by in a way that I get to learn or see new stuff.
