Senor Tron posted:Annoying thing with the washing machine is that it doesn't unlock for a couple of minutes after playing the drat song. To contribute to laundry chat, we got a ductless Mielle dryer last year. If you select "extra dry" it will beep that its in that mode. Every. 20. Seconds. For like five minutes. All that IOT programming to monitor via an app and nothing to change either that beep frequency or volume. Except to turn the volume completely off.

Heck Yes! Loam! posted:Mine does twinkle twinkle little star. Love that rice cooker. I love that rice cooker too, and I think it's a great thing to talk about in the context of smart appliances, because you have a heinously expensive machine with reasonably niche appeal, and yet it's so well designed and functional that if you talk to anyone who has one and try to take it away, they'll be like "I will loving cut you. I will gut you like a fish!" And it doesn't have, or need, Internet connectivity. It's just perfectly designed to do exactly what it does, and it does it well, and people pay an order of magnitude more than a basic rice cooker to have one. Why is this ethos not applied to other appliances? The only other appliance I've seen such devotion to is the Breville toaster oven. And again: it's very "basic" and "unsmart," it just does the task it's meant to do very well.

I bought a second hand thermomix and it is a pretty impressive device. I thought, well this is pretty good, maybe I will fly to the UK and buy a new one (it is not available where I live). Then found out the latest one needs internet connectivity and a membership to use recipes? gently caress that! The second hand one is good, just only have the original recipe chip (in French) and seems hard to get more recipe chips but whatever, still an awesome heating blender.

I have one because anything cheap won't stand up to heavy use and I expect it to pay off over the long run.

How'd you guess I have been to SE Asia?

Always finish what's on your plate, here have another spoonful, only a little bit left. But yes, fried rice is tasty. Also milk, rice and sugar.

Reminds me of beta-level constructs from Alistair Reynold's Revelation Space. They're basically just a character sheet along with a database of recordings from the original person paired with a voiced projection. I suppose you could do a lovely version of this with current character sheets and an Elevenlabs voice. The results will be ghoulish and weird, though.

Don't do this, but if any of your parents/family/friends regularly send you voice notes on WhatsApp (or I assume iMessage, idk I'm not American) you already have enough isolated recordings of their voice to perfectly clone them. I hate the future.
