Well, I haven’t gotten around to washing this PC yet but I did discover that it does not in fact have a 386 as the case badge implies, but it has a 486 DX4 100mhz, which is the fastest, most powerful 486 that intel ever made

iComp extended far enough into the p2/3 range to roughly guestimate 6 iComp points are worth one geekbench point.

An i9-13900 at 2.4ghz base clock would have an icomp score of 397,986.

It’s wild that the benchmark is printed right on the chip. Can you imagine said i9-13whateverK coming with that emblazoned on the heat spreader?

Weird times.

It’s also wild to consider that the top of the line of any chip could run without a heatsink

It's an Intel-specific benchmark rather than any sort of third-party evaluation, so it was just their word on how to rank their CPUs in terms of net performance in the 386-PIII era.

Revision demo party was again last weekend and the most interesting prod was this demo for the Arkanoid arcade cabinet. They reverse engineered the board and wrote new ROM chips for it. And also wrote a crack and a trainer.

That does have many familiar things. Of course the yellow Donald Duck binders, but also that "Suuret löytöretket" ("Great Expeditions") book that everyone apparently had. And the scrooge piggy bank.

I would have liked a Hakki Hamsteri or Jeans Club reference. And Myrkky magazine.

Ha, I had that cassette carousel. I think most of my Donald binders were red, though?

E: apparently they changed to red ones in 1992 [at least in Norway]. Huh.

There's a few other Bad Anacronisms in the picture, apart from the poo poo joystick.

e: I'm looking at that lamp and thinking "is that my brother's old lamp?" and, of course, it could be. I'll try to dig up some old photos to see if the stickers match.

Yeah. That photo is more a general 80s/90s nostalgia mix instead of a single point in time.

Good time to share the birth of imgur. It was a great service before it got delusions of grandeur and tried to be its own social platform.

My understanding was that right up until now you could upload the most depraved poo poo imaginable as long as it wasn't tied to an account/shared to "the community".

Sucks for the forums and anywhere else people have ever posted images. I'm at least enough of a packrat that I still have everything I've made and every image I've found interesting saved locally, but at this point the directory is a giant gently caress-it-bucket of hundreds of thousands of files. At least it's something.

The idea of a free image hosting service for the entire internet is already a tech relic that was only possible in the first place because of immense amount of loose cash sloshing around in the web economy. That well has finally dried up and the effect can also be seen in how Meta and Twitter are scrambling for some kind of actual income structure that is not completely tied to venture capitalism or the whims of corporate advertisers. On the other hand it means that old forums threads might turn unreadable, on the other hand gigatons of all kinds of random poo poo that was posted anonymously will be wiped out from circulation, so I'm not too negative about the whole thing. Embrace the transience of all things and all that.

I agree that this is a dumb move, but they really should just disallow uploading without an account. Purging everything not related to an account seems like they're band-aiding the real problem, or at least the problem as they describe it.

No more imgur without an account is a much easier pill to swallow

Someone really needs to make a distributed bittorrent-like thing where we all run our waffleimgur client and every time the page requests an image from it, it goes and grabs it from the distributed network.
