I wonder if certain behaviors of the rich/powerful can be attributed to some sort of evolutionary drift caused by the lack of pressure they experience? They seem pretty loving backwards and vile as a rule. "Debt trap" is such a non issue. China owns minor share of the debt (like less than 20%) both in Sri Lanka and in the African countries. Probably in Pakistan too since Pakistan borrow mostly from Saudi.
