Here's another Dalai Llama OSS story:

Tibetan border guards shot and killed a friendly CIA spy and wounded his White Russian companion due to a wacky mixup in 1950. This was actually the first death of a CIA officer in the line of duty. The offending guards were initially sentenced to torture by a Tibetan military court. Keep in mind the source here is pro-monarchy OSS man Frank Bessac who was witness to all the events and friend to the Dalai Llama. He published the story in Life Magazine:

"The leader was to have his nose and both ears cut off. The man who fired the first shot was to lose both ears. A third man was to lose one ear, and the others were to get 50 lashes each".

"Since the Tibetan Buddhists do not believe in capital punishment, mutilation is the stiffest sentence given".

Bessac goes on to say that was too grotesque for him so he had the sentence reduced to 50 to 200 lashes each then watched, "enjoyed the whole proceeding", and took pictures(two of which are included in the article).

I wonder if certain behaviors of the rich/powerful can be attributed to some sort of evolutionary drift caused by the lack of pressure they experience? They seem pretty loving backwards and vile as a rule.

Edit: I hope in some respects it's just a natural effect of their upbringing, as the idea that they bring something worse to the world and spread it around is pretty sad.

Yeah, actually, gamers in the house forever,

remember that “brainwashing” is not just from comic books of whatever but is the original Havana Syndrome bullshit. no one would ever believe in socialism of their own free will therefore it can only
be the result of a psychological condition. it’s the same as the wumao thing how it isn’t just enough for liberals to believe that people who disagree with them are wrong; no, literally no one disagrees with them at all but some people are paid to pretend to disagree

Yeah using "brainwashing" in a piece of Korea is especially tasteless when placed in the context of the origins of that term and its reverberations into modern day.

There's a funny bit in that documentary about US POW's who decided to stay and live in the DPRK, one of them was separated from his unit and hiding in a bush, and witnessed a Chinese patrol coming into a Korean village and actually paying for their food and being nice to the villagers - with what he knew US troops would do in the same situation he just went "well, I guess I'm on the wrong team" and stood up and handed himself in, lol

Some black artillery GIs surrendered after being ordered to stay behind and die covering white infantry's retreat, which was obviously racist and exactly backwards for which group was supposed to be protected according to doctrine. Unrelatedly, some white POWs formed KKK cells to resist their captors and beat on cooperative prisoners, but only because they wouldn't stop doing whataboutisms!!!

A senior Chinese central bank official said last month that China is reluctant to participate in sovereign debt restructuring unless the World Bank and other regional development banks also agree to write down their own loans. The World Bank dismisses that demand, arguing that development bank financing already comes with low interest rates and does not add significantly to a country’s debt burden.

"Debt trap" is such a non issue. China owns minor share of the debt (like less than 20%) both in Sri Lanka and in the African countries. Probably in Pakistan too since Pakistan borrow mostly from Saudi.

“I’m very, very concerned about some of the activities that China engages in globally, investing in countries in ways that leave them trapped in debt and don’t promote economic development,” Yellen told U.S. lawmakers last month. “We are working very hard to counter that influence in all of the international institutions that we participate in.

Oh I just realized that if you're the US forcing a big interest spike and a recession would be a way to hurt China economically due to their heavy lending in the past couple of years

It would also be incredibly damaging to yourself and your people but you know, why start caring now

how come the articles about Chinese debt trap loans virtually never quote or even anonymously interview officials/businesspeople from one of the nations (which they also never name) struggling to repay China. even for propaganda it's presented in the most insulting paternalistic way possible

e: also doing anything on the Moon is tens of times harder than doing it on Earth not only because of vacuum but because no atmosphere means none of the lunar fines have been eroded so every bit of dust is an extremely jagged sharp little dagger that will gently caress up any machinery without constant lubrication and cleaning, just like your mother.
