I think it was on one of the zoo shows on Animal Planet or NatGeo Wild where they said that turtles can feel the brushing on their shell and quite enjoy it.

Now I’m imagining setting up a gentle buffing wheel attached to a weight-activated switch, and just seeing how much of their day a turtle will spend getting brushed.

Turtles can feel their shells and love them to be scratched by brushes or wood fences, or the bottom of kitchen cabinets. Had a couple tortoise growing up and one of them had a favorite scratching corner in the kitchen where he’d just rub his rear end against the cabinets. If you used a toothbrush on their back, they absolutely push into you like a dog enjoying a brush.
