Most of the true boutique high end companies are just waiting to die while they complain about the kids today not wanting to spend 5 grand on a tonearm. I think part of it is that they also depended on people eventually upgrading their way into big boy systems without keeping an eye on the low/middle end of the market and just assuming that would stay healthy.

those kids with their JBL 305Ps are gonna upgrade anytime now...whoops they already have better audio than us hackfrauds

in *fairness* the idea of MQA being "cool technology which gives lossless sound quality with lower bandwidth" makes a ton more sense in the Bluetooth realm than the online streaming realm. now that tech might be a crock of poo poo but that's besides the point

does anyone actually give a poo poo about their Bluetooth codec btw?

There's also that big group (Voxx) who own Klipsch, Onkyo and Pioneer's non-turntable stuff and Klipsch has gone hard into soundbars and powered speakers too, while still having the more "halo" stuff like the Klipschorn/La Scala line.

(apparently those guys also own Acoustic Research but as a zombie brand - all that's on their site is outdoor speakers and some rebranded IEMs)

LOL my best Laserdisc player is an Onkyo.

Onkyo sells lots of A/V receivers but their quality/reliability is quite poo poo compared to like a Yamaha or Denon

Yeah I bought one from Best Buy in 2018 or something, not having done much research and getting it because it was the cheapest one with all the features I wanted. But it's got all sorts of weird ghosts and gremlins, so to speak.

Randomly won't play audio, have to hard restart or unplug/replug in 2-3 times before it decides to start again. It does have Spotify and Chromecast connect, but doesn't stream Tidal from a phone, it only has a very subpar app that you can only control via remote. One night at like 3 AM it just glitched out and started BLASTING white noise distortion at max volume, nearly gave me a heart attack and had an angry neighbour slamming on the wall.. yeah the list goes on. When I started looking online I started seeing a lot of people having the same issues.

But to be fair it does sound pretty decent, the phono stage was pretty poo poo though

I have a 656 I bought around the same time and touch wood, haven’t had any real issues. I never contemplated the phono stage might suck though. I do have a little phono amp in my chain anyway I just use to ground the turntable, maybe I should switch to that and sacrifice something in a line in. Hm.

Well it's definitely worth doing an A/B comparison to see what sounds better to you. I did on my NR-676 and noticed a lot more surface noise/pops/etc., It sounded kinda muddy, and the dynamic range/EQ almost sounded like they crudely tried to colour the sound in the style of a Loudness/DRC button. The ~$150 phono stage I put in is noticeably quieter on distractions like pops and cracks, has better dynamic range, subtle details come out more and the EQ seems neutral across the band. Keep in mind I mostly listen to classical and jazz on mostly only low play count records, and most with incredible recording engineering work in concert halls. I'm sure the difference is less pronounced on something like AC/DC Back in Black and such.

I AM ALL I AM NONE
My Onkyo receiver's HDMI ports poo poo the bed just out of warranty. Apparently a known issue with the model I had. Looked into repairing it - it would have to be shipped to an Onkyo service center at my expense and the "repair" probably wouldn't last long. Seems like they were swapping out the failed HDMI component for the same flawed component, which would soon fail the same way.

Went back to Yamaha, will never buy another Onkyo.

Breaking news for my reddit peeps: we will be introducing hi-res FLAC for our HiFi Plus subscribers soon. It's lossless and an open standard. It's a big file, but we'll give you controls to dial this up and down based on what's going on.
e: Also Onkyo had a free replacement program for the HDMI board problem for like a full decade. The reputational damage was bad, though, it's probably one of the main reasons they almost went out of business like 3 times in the last 5 years [and ended up doing full bankruptcy and now being owned by the same holding company as Klipsch].

Mods please change my name to "Tooter Skeleton" TIA.

I would love to know the logic behind HDMI CEC/eARC and power on commands because I'll be hosed if I can figure it out. Sometimes it's "power on with TV if it was the last audio output selected", sometimes it's "power on with the TV even if it wasn't the last audio out selected but the TV was the last input", and sometimes it's "power on when nothing is selected at all, or maybe depending on shutdown order". All I want is to be able to use the pass through remote without the power management.

I mean CEC is better than it was (because it used to be absolute garbage) but this is ridiculous.

How am I supposed to get value out of my $1000 dollar hdmi cable now????

Letting vendors design their own implementations is the worst possible way to write a standard but the HDMI Group has a history of making the wrong choice at every opportunity.
