Well, there goes our streak of good main events. Wonder if they can get anyone to fight Tsarukyan on two weeks' notice.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

UFC is on sunday morning rather than saturday night for me. the casuals didn't show up because of various reasons like "i want to hunt for chocolate eggs with my cute nephews instead of watching a man get pummelled on easter morning" but the regular crew was around and there was a decent crowd that had loaded up on booze with minimal food so everyone was rowdy and exploded when izzy KOed pereira.

then we met up with the casuals and got even more drunk so all in all, it was a pretty good UFC

Nice narration through Izzy’s finish:

I’d missed that Izzy’s eyes are tracking where Pereira’s head is even as he gets partly caught by the left hook. Truly a game of millimeters.

It's funny to think that he actually started out being fairly enjoyable (although I didn’t watch him on TUF and maybe he was always an annoying weirdo), he was knocking all his opponents out, KO'd annoying dipshit Kevin Casey outta the UFC, and his only stinker of a fight early on was against Elias Theodorou who had possibly the most obnoxious fighting style in history

Sam Alvey should keep fighting because it keeps him distracted from his real life pastime of plotting how to kidnap children so their actual family members can't get custody of them.

Despite it being mostly unheralded, I'm getting the big fight jitters for Holloway vs. Allen. I'm a big fan of both guys, Max is Max and obviously amazing but Arnold Allen is heavily underrated.

People aren't putting much stock in his win over Kattar because of the injury, but while that was unfortunate I don't think it was the story of the fight. They had a slow rangefinding and feeling out process for a couple minutes, then Arnold Allen was completely dominating Kattar landing a bunch of solid strikes to one single good punch (a ratio far better than Holloway achieved in his own domination of Kattar, though at less of a pace), and then Kattar was desperate enough to throw a wild knee strike that he injured himself landing from. I don't see it as fundamentally that different than Yair's win over Ortega.

While there's some uncertainty around just how good Allen is, I think the likely range runs from top 5 FW at the bottom to top 10 fighter in the whole sport.

For the matchup itself, Allen poses some interesting problems for Holloway. He's a southpaw, which has caused Holloway some issues in the past, who likes to move in and out of range with a lot of interruptive strikes or solid combinations on an angle. Holloway really wants to build off his jab, stopping him from doing that seems to be the key to winning against him standing, as shown by Alex and Poirer. Allen also has a good low leg kick, he does a great job of covering it or throwing it after forcing movement.

A prime Max is definitely a massive step above anything Allen has faced, though. It's a pace and pressure that broke one of the greats, it's fluidity and snappiness back up by an iron chin, it's a hundred subtle details underscoring the punches that never stop long enough to have a moment to think about how to address them. But is this still prime Holloway? I worry that the answer is no, that he was thrown to the wolves too young and too early in his career and while he rose from that to the championship, the wars are starting to take their toll.

On paper, Yair should've been a great stylistic matchup: Holloway should've been able to force Yair onto the backfoot enough to largely take away his ability to kick safely, and even if he didn't he should've been able to outpace and out cardio someone so reliant on big actions. That didn't happen, Holloway had success on the feet but was eventually catching the losing end of exchanges more often than not and had to rely on his wrestling to separate himself on the scorecards. He lost the fifth round. Then, in his third fight vs. Volkanovski, he had his career worst 5 round performance, failing to win a single round on any card. He was left beat up and bleeding, having been heavily outlanded by the more telling strikes.

But he's still Max Holloway, he bounced back from the first loses to Volkanovski by setting the significant strike record against Kattar with over 400 in a fight I christened him "Onslaught".

It's going to be fantastic fight, I'm only sad one of them has to lose.

Facts. Unless Yair upsets Volk a Max win has sucky divisional implications.

Then again Yair will have to beat Volk twice probably so that would gum up things even further. Instant rematches suck poo poo.
