It's already illegal, that's why only criminals do it. The problem is that there is absolutely zero way whatsoever to prevent it. Positively nothing. Not a thing. Can't ban guns because that would only take them away from non-criminals. And all the criminals would just go to Criminal Walmart where they can buy infinite guns.

I’ve started responding to “it’s not guns, it’s mental illness!” with “So if being in America somehow causes people to become violently mentally ill far more than any other country on earth, we should probably not allow such easy access to guns since their sole purpose is to kill things until we figure out how to fix the mental illness thing” and people get Real Mad because they’ve been trained that shouting mental illness is some sort of checkmate, liberal move.

Like if there really is some kind of element that is causing people to loss their minds violently in America at extreme rates that’s even more of a reason to restrict gun access because anyone could just become one of The Crazies at anytime

America is a very large and geographically isolated country, most Americans don't know anyone who lives in another country. Except for people close to the Canadian border, Americans aren't going to be personally familiar with a country that doesn't have a gun violence problem. So right away it's easier to make arguments that rely on people forgetting other countries exist. If Germany let every 18-year-old with a pulse walk out of a gun store with an arsenal it would be tough to blame the resulting shootings on video games when everyone's Dutch friends are playing the same games. Or mental illness or whatever, all their French or Italian friends would be like "well mental illness exists here too and no one shoots up a school".

But also it's an excuse. Thanks to decades of gun manufacturer propaganda and culture war bullshit, a ton of people absolutely believe that more guns make them safer and when reality doesn't agree they need a rationalization.

One of my friends is very cosmopolitan but he's from the Dallas suburbs so he has a lot of chud childhood friends because Dallas. So during covid they'd talk about how covid was fake, Democrats made it up to shut down the economy in order to hurt Trump's reelection etc, and he had this one friend from the UK who would ask them if they thought everyone in her country was making it up too, like why would the British care enough about American elections to shut down their own economies. Nobody ever answered her and it didn't change any minds because it wasn't about that.

This is some end-state fashbrain poo poo right here. It's not even "opposite of reality", because understanding what a gun literally is and what it literally does is the only way it works as a visual metaphor. The comic hinges on knowing and understanding the literal truth and just rejecting it and substituting a purely political understanding of the situation instead of the real, literal one.
