Lame: Checking to make sure the burger shop doesn't poison the burgers buy giving a few to secret service first.

Preferred method: buy 5x the number of burgers you need so that the chance of someone dying is only 20%.

Sounds like nonsense to me.

I mean yeah Ted and Marco tried a little and failed but those guys have been humiliated enough by Trump and understand that they have no chance challenging him in 2024 and no way will they enter this cycle.

But Ron and Tim Scott and Haley are entering this race (presumably in the case of Ron) somehow with a plan that they might win without ever engaging or attacking their main opponent. Their runs seem based entirely on the presumption that Trump will either not run (too late, he's in the race), will drop out, be jailed or die or become medically infirm prior to the election, or that he will somehow refrain from throwing poop at them like Donkey Kong throwing flaming barrels.

In the case of Haley, and maybe Scott, perhaps it's just a VP audition in which case it might actually make sense. But no way will DeSantis ever be Trump's VP even if he wanted it, Trump would never tolerate a potential rival to be one heart attack away from taking his job.

I mean it looks like maybe DeSantis is just a paper tiger anyway and he just wouldn't have the chops to get elected President, Trump or not. But it certainly looks like he would have been a lot better off just sitting this one out like Ted and Marco instead of making the motions to run.

He's (making motions like he's) coming at the king. And it's looking like he missed. Badly.

I mean I get it though. If they're gonna run at all, they have to start campaigning at some point. They don't have the option of waiting for Trump to be disqualified, but if by some chance he does, they need a backup. It would be pretty unprecedented, at least in recent history, to only put forward one option in the entire primary, especially one as volatile as him.

But it is funny how the entire party is now defined by loyalty to him, so he's essentially impossible to run against. But in some sense, how can they just... not?

He's deflected it by saying that he is smart person who used the law to protect his money, as a big smart money man does. It was brought up a lot in the last election. In my mind, if you are a GOP candidate is to say you lost the election to Joe loving Biden. You lost, the voters rejected you, we can't win with you on the ballot because you're a loser.

But they can't because they'd have to acknowledge the election as a legitimate.

The problem the Republicans have is that their minority of crazies control the party but they don't have a person who can unite the majority or pull of enough base people. They are all aiming for the same piece of the pie, whether they believe it or not, but don't know how to be genuine to the crazies.

I see what you're saying. I'm undecided whether going scorched earth against Trump is the way to beat him or maybe the alternative which perhaps Haley, Scott and Pence are trying which looks more like what Frank Luntz proposed (non paywalled version). Which is basically to criticize his erratic behavior and distractions and making everything about himself and propose to do better while praising his 'accomplishments' but avoiding harshly criticizing Trump. I tend to lean more in the direction of, DeSantis is the only one who could beat Trump and would be most likely to do so by going viciously scorched earth and out toxifying Trump, it could work but would probably lose him the general election so it's starting to look like he won't run at all.
