that “exposed” podcaster interview about lvov/lviv was very good, and both the interviewer and interviewee seemed very well read and impartial, so surprising/ absolutely not surprising that the state department wanted this person silenced if she’s clever she can slap a few labels over herself - too hot for tv! what they don’t want you to know about!! etc

OctaMurk posted:eh, the tank still got penetrated. the crew just got lucky the main point of shaped charges isn't to penetrate the metal, it's to send little bits of it flying everywhere and turning the crew into chunky salsa since that didn't happen one would assume that the reactive armor did something to stop the charge from working as intended

Its that time posted:We said it before, but this is a major shift in the tectonic plates of world politics and economics. Our politicians seem to be too concerned with short term gains to consider even investigating the long term consequences of this. On the short term, this is just a way to bypass sanctions altogether. Unless the West puts all of Asia under sanctions, nothing can be done. What I have understood, as I engage with traditional economists that come out of the top schools like Harvard, is that they rely on instrumentalism as their primary theoretical tool. What I mean by this is that they view economics devoid of "human" characteristics, and catastrophically, they don't take into account the political economy at all. This leads to a certain type of dogma, in which the insistence is that reality is nothing more than a math problem. In this view, it makes perfect sense why European economists, who largely study Austrian and Chicago style neoliberal economics, continue to believe sanctions will have an effect. The logic is straightforward - by locking key industry inputs, and/or preventing access to foreign reserves, there would be a natural contraction as debt obligations take on a larger share of economic surplus and the consumer economy shrinks due to central banks fighting to defending their local currency, which leads to devaluation and inflation. In this instrumentalist view, the political economy is treated as a non-issue; instead, a productive economy is a narrow-minded view of markets alone. When analyzing market-causality in this way, as is taught in traditional economic courses, it seems baffling as to why Russia is resilient to inflation effects. In fact, there is no real answer, other than simply saying that oil exports alone are somehow keeping the whole thing afloat. Hand waving away the vast forces that are now at play is part of this instrumentalist view. Most western economists, including myself, are taught and trained to believe that value is inherent in assets. In this type of thinking, commodities and currency are almost magical, which is why so many conspiracy theories you find on the internet center around gold. It's baffling to me how some of my colleagues and fellow economists are looking at what's going on with Russia and simply saying "just wait, the collapse will soon come". Value theory, something that classical economists like Smith, Ricardo and Marx spoke about extensively, is now suddenly required reading to make sense of how sanctions are causing a huge, global schism. We're no longer talking about different economic styles, we're talking about 2 different universes with completely different understanding of economic theory itself. Raw resources, exports and commodities are taught to be "lower" levels of economic sophistication within orthodox thinking. Export based countries like Venezuela or Congo will be "naturally" underdeveloped due to their over-reliance on a single commodity. In reality, the western economic model, as defined in Bretton Woods, is neo-colonial as it forces these countries to have an unequal trade portfolio - if we send cars to Congo and they send us cobalt, why would they develop their own native car industry? This is supposedly "efficient" free trade, but all it does is keep countries underdeveloped and reliably "resource cursed", as they have to import basic needs, which as their population grows, will strain their export capabilities to keep up. This inevitably leads to a constrained, unproductive economy as the currency weakens to service their growing import debt leads to eventual debt-bondage by the IMF as they give them loans with unpayable terms, which leads to a vicious cycle. It's like telling a starving man he has to win a marathon, but not allow him to eat any food. Russian economists were just as blind to this reality on why countries outside of the neo-colonial western core stagnate. Further liberalization only leads to increasing polarization as the richest part of their country gains wealth, impoverishing the rest. It's only in places like America where we consider it to be a success when there's a row of 10 million dollar condos next to a tent city - smashing and grabbing without planning for the long term is how colonizers act, and the damage they spread in their wake is simply thought to be the fault of the colonized. It's not surprising to me that western economists don't know, or even understand, the schism taking place. The people that do see it are the generals - just like in WW1 when Germany used the power of their centralized bank (similar to how China is setup today) to leapfrog England in development, this eventually led to a showdown where economic systems were as much in play as the rest of the appetite for war. Our system is not capable of long term growth without being a parasite on other countries, extracting cheap labor and cheap raw material on currency terms so comically asymmetrically favoring us that we force other countries to transact in dollars; can you imagine the reaction of American politicians if we had to conduct all of our trade in Indian Rupees?

And regarding FF's post about Canada's North, I'm sure our politicians will find market based solutions once we get there. The lack of vision on that is appaling. I'm sure it's gonna be something like Canada's having nominal ownership of airbases and ports, ''assuming command'' of sort. All of it turning out to be just USA boots on the ground from top to bottom. I'm sure they will martial more Rangers up north for the PR stunt, grifting on snowmobile contracts and whatever else on the go. The fun part would be if the Indigenous bartered them off for rare, luxury goods like water purifiers and generators with ships passing by. Not that funny to think the polar ice caps might melt before the canadian government provide them basic living conditions.

A lot easier said than done, also DCS in all likelihood can’t really model how radar is going to work in a peer to peer conflict because so much about radar interoperability and stealth isn’t readily available, In particular, how countries can use datalinks to breakdown the profile of an aircraft. I think the problem in the north is going to be naval strength, and the fact that, with the Russian Northern Fleet sitting there, it is going to be very difficult to dislodge the Russians from dominating most of the Arctic Ocean. NATO, and particularly US, resources are stretched as it is. Ardennes has issued a correction as of 18:56 on Apr 17, 2023 |

Or more likely they got very very lucky. The armour is just thin on the top of a tank. It's also poorly angled, so ERA doesn't affect the warhead very much. On the other hand, this is not a massive chunk of spall at all, which is one of the downsides of the javelin's small warhead. The other side of luck is that the javelin crew hit the tank, because its a clunky weapon that isn't accurate at maximum range.
