Russian lefty youtube channel did a summary of recent budget figures

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjfGEwlc2BU

quote:

In the first two months of 2023, the Russian budget deficit was almost 2.6 trillion roubles. The budget for the whole of 2023 has a planned deficit of just over 2.9 trillion roubles - in the first two months of the year, the authorities have almost reached that figure. Expenditures have grown by 51% over the same period last year, while revenues have fallen by 24%. The state finances have not been in such a state for many years.

Anyway, also mentions that the output of finished metallurgic products is up like 30% or something compared to the previous year.

I am not watching that half hour video. Looking at that YouTube channel's history, I'm sure the author is the quintessential eastern European liberal fanboy.

The liberal way to call down big guns is with extremely expensive and sophisticated guided missiles called down by private military contractor tier one operators, the educated experts of the battlefield. *blows up hospital anyways

Nobody has ever ended a war because it went over budget.

Running out of steel has ended wars though.

I'm regretting listening to this, apparently Iran is helping Russia win the war so Russia can help them invade Iraq, for??? I don't know. Also apparently Russia isn't producing artillery shells or replacement barrels, because reasons??

Apologies, I should have proof read it a little closer for fat thumb typing.

Honestly I've seen the result of what's supposedly happened and it's not a lifted turret, it's a heavily damaged recoil system with the gun being fully run out (compressed) it's then put in the clamp and driven to armourers who go through hours worth of checks, the cage on the bottom of the turret would have been ripped off in order to get where it's sitting, it would also have ripped all the cables that go through a rotary base junction box that connect the turret to the hull. The multi ton weight of the turret wouldn't sit like that with the barrel in that position, it would have been recovered in situ back to wherever they operate out of, I would expect a lot more damage to the turret cage, not ruling it out as stranger things have happened.

Not watching but Iran's finally getting some Su-35s and probably some nice deals, help in sanction busting. First real IRIAF acquisition since they stole mig-29s from Saddam IIRC

super dumb question

how is any counter offensive going to be much of a surprise? it's not as if there's a question of IF ukraine will ramp up after mud season. russia has abundant aerial surveillance, and otherwise. any and all materiel buildup will be seen. they're literally at war, so everyone has active countermeasures ready and are free to fire... what does it matter if there's a powerpoint leaked with a date?

Whatever the military need would usually be for secrecy or surprise, in this case it's far eclipsed by the political need to telegraph, well basically trumpet, the location, objectives and timelines of any offensive to western donors, due to the specific situation Ukraine is in.

Agreed. Even the most frugal business I've worked at had free coffee. This place had free coffee and cheap cafeteria meals, but sometimes the cafeteria does special things like seasonal desserts or a really nice free coffee!

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

Honestly I think the problem is that a lot of people confuse the question of "what ought America do, assuming we were trying to do the best thing for the world" and "what is America actually doing." The objective of American foreign policy is not to bring peace and justice to Eastern Europe, it's to keep us in and the Russians out. Doesn't matter at all if that means we accidentally do something right.

Interesting, but what if it's that nazis have the worst tanks and are dumber than pigs?

I just watched a video about how when Hermann Goering committed everything the Luftwaffe had to Operation Bodenplatte during the Battle of the Bulge, he neglected to inform any other branch of the German military what time the aircraft would be launching, and by this stage of the war the concept of "large formation of friendly aircraft overhead" was so alien to the Wehrmacht that they blanketed the Luftwaffe with flak as they flew past... and then flakked them again hours later when they came back (in dramatically reduced numbers).

They did but not as frequently as they should.

Also we would get an email from the regional NEC telling us someones computer had been compromised occasionally which meant we had to call the user and tell them that their computer had been disabled and they had to turn it in for re-imaging AND they had to take the cyber awareness challenge to re-active their account. Which was fun while I was at west point because just about everyone that did this was at least a lt colonel.

The Ukrainians' greatest advantage here is Russian politics. Russia very clearly has a ceiling for casualties they are willing to take, and will give ground where they have to rather than allow themselves to get put in a position where they have to go toe to toe with the Ukrainians on equal terms.

That means if the Ukrainians pile on somewhere, they will achieve some level of local success because, in the time before Russian fires can be massed from elsewhere and brought to bear, local commanders will break contact and withdraw. Ukraine gains some territory on the map, and the casualties they suffer under the rain of shells never makes it to western reporting. With no reporting on casualties, it's easy to make all of these look like major wins.

Russia is trading space for losses, and absent that last bit, it's just Ukraine gaining space.

Now, you could argue how sustainable this is etc etc but what we've seen is that Ukrainian military and political leadership is committed to... whatever the gently caress they are doing.
