A few top end draft picks in Stamkos and Hedman, having some later picks turn into elite players with Vasilevsky, Kucherov and Point, initially having peripheral prospects pan out well enough that they had great depth in the form of guys like Ondrej Palat, and then using that all as a base to be super aggressive in trading everything that wasn't nailed down to fill out the rest of their roster. Also cap wizardry.

I didn’t get to watch a lot of regular season games, but of those I did watch, he seemed competent. These two games he’s looked like average at best. This is not helped by the Avs new strategy of aggressively giving the puck away up the middle.
