I haven't tried this in MJ, but I will. I have done this in ChatGPT and its language ability is pretty rudimentary. <Language> to English is pretty good. English to <Language> is not any better than Google Translate, though.

Seems the thread has moved on, but here are my tests regardless.

German:
Duetsche Frau tanzt mit dem tueffel - German woman dances with the devil
Result: No Devil

Eine deutsche Frau tanzt auf der Straße - German woman dancing in the street
Result: looks like Germany I suppose but got the 'woman dancing in the street' part

eine Frau tanzt auf der Straße - A woman dancing in the street
Result: Looks like it's influenced by the language

English: a woman dancing in the street
Result: similar but more varied in 'ethnicity'

Elon Musk sitting on mars holding a potato:
French: Elon Musk assis sur Mars avec une pomme de terre.

German: Elon Musk sitzt auf dem Mars mit einer Kartoffel.

Japanese: イーロン・マスクが火星に座り、ジャガイモを持っています
Result: It knew it was something about space or mars, but not much else.

Japanese in kana only: エロンマスクがかせいにすわり、じゃがいもをもっています
Result: LOL all Japanese is Animu

Japanese in Romaji: Elon Masku ga Kasei ni suwarite, jyagaimo wo motteimasu.
Result: Well, it got Elon Musk

Japanese with better grammar: 火星に座りジャガイモを持つイーロン・マスク (my wife thought this sounded more natural)
Result: Elon "Mask" LOL

Conclusion: It definitely understands western languages way better than Asian. I did a bunch of iterations of the Japanese ones and never got closer than the one that has Mars. I also tried just "火星" and it did give me pictures of Mars, so it seems to understand parts.

Then I thought to compare some images using the same seed as stuff I've done before but translated to a different language, so here's those comparisons. In these cases, the language clearly does matter, and it seems to understand what is being asked in a lot of cases. Not sure why there's better results with these. But MJ still struggled with some. Maybe the ChatGPT translation for the languages I don't know? :iiam:

Yeah I think for at least the next 2 years, especially for LLMs, less so image AIs, renting cloud time is the way to go

I looked into a "good" machine with 128GB memory for playing around with LLMs and was looking at a $8-11k bill

Seems like stable diffusion will run on a $900 $340 card though which is nice

It doesn't understand anything, it associated non-english words with images based on it's training data. Which is why when you feed it prompts in German, it spits out images that look like they're from Germany, because the training data images that were labeled in German were most likely taken in Germany.
English results in more varied output because more of the training data came from English sources.

Also because it's the lingua franca, so it's spoken more widely geographically and in more contexts around the world than German is, generally.

You're really going to have to get over this semantics argument, because the majority of people playing in this space who use language like "understand" in this context are doing it as shorthand for "associate words with images based on it's training data." OP was not assuming theory of mind.
