That might be ok I guess but he's also in his late 40s, dating a girl in her late 20s, who is a bartender in a trendy area and has bartender/server friends/roommates/etc.

So he's hiring people he meets out of that pool of people. One has kind of worked out in that she's helping with HR now but had no idea what she was doing when she first came on, she worked as a waitress and then as like the receptionist at a gym.

I get a call out of the blue a couple weeks ago at noon or so.

"Hey, I have someone I want you to talk to about QC!"

"Talk to as in like, hire?"

"Yeah, I think he'll be great!"

"Ok, if you want me to, but I'm not really hiring anyone at the moment?"

"I'll send him over, he'll be there at 2 pm!"

So I interview this guy. It's a QC role but we do a lot of electrical troubleshooting, calibrations, etc, so it's not something just anyone can walk in and do. This guy is a bartender, in his first semester of school to be an electrician (literally in a 101 class I think at the moment), a musician on the side also. So he goes to school until noon, works as a bartender in the evenings, and has side gigs in the area at local bars as a musician. His availability is like twice a week in the afternoon. He's not going to be useful to me for a very, very long time. Boss is bound and determined to hire him for *something* though, and wants me to manage him.

They're taxable everywhere. But the programs will trigger net 0 payroll adjustments everywhere I've ever been given the scrip which is maybe a big deal for major big brain tax schemes but is probably noise for everyone else.

This also makes them a big dumb options program for penny amounts because you're usually accruing like $10s of dollars a year and cashing out for a sweet $50 frying pan 5 years in and just get the tax hit in year 5. See, the company is helping you out by not giving you real bonuses.

Yammer quotas are because middle managers are big babies who want to see big engagement and are willing to pay you to do so at the expense of work. Except surprise you'll be fired for not meeting a real goal while the Yammer quota is probably just going to be used to make sure you get the 0.5% 'average performance' pay raise.

Those work rewards remind me about the time I took an easy a college course that was called entrepreneurship. It was taught by a very rich guy that taught the class just to make himself seem smart. He made his millions by basically creating computer scantrons back in the olden days. It was a lot of jerking off how entrepreneurs are just so driven and smart. His current at the time multimillion dollar business was a reward system for companies to give points to employees that could spin a digital wheel and win prizes. It was hooked up to like credit card companies and poo poo. I’m sure it was used to not pay employees better.

He would also take apprentices from the university if he liked you enough. One of them came to speak for a class and was making a bunch of money selling stock images and we had to sit through that thing like it was the most innovative idea in the world. Man what a piece of poo poo that guy was, trying to pass off being super lucky as if it was just something he was born with and you just couldn’t teach. Wish I could remember his name cause I wanna see what other dumb poo poo idea made him millions.

Was pretty loving cult-y, lots of nonsense words and numbers on projector slides that didn't add up. Once all the 'recruits' left they immediately had a members-only meeting where the speaker yelled at them all for not pulling in enough new bodies for the bottom of the pyramid. When I got home I Googled them and saw all the MLM stuff and noped out, but didn't have the balls to tell my friend she was being duped by a scam :(

It was legitimate unfortunately. Like he partnered with some credit cards and he made a front end for corporations to send their employees to spin a wheel and win prizes. I’m sure it was in lieu of actual bonuses or pay raises. It was very see how fun we are? You get to play games on company time! I don’t know if it’s still around, probably not cause I doubt any company wants to spend the money on frivolous poo poo for their employees instead of just grinding them to dust.

Well, column A, column B.
In that, it's quite possible to truly be incredible value and be incredibly valued, but still be underpaid and then fired, because organisations with competent management pursuing the stated legitimate goals of the organisation are uncommon.

It's best not to be too secure because there is no chain of reason or logic that can make you safe from a fundamentally broken, unreasonable system.

Sorry about the bad news :(

If it was a corporate thing I'd agree, and I'll never feel 100% safe or anything. But this is a mom and popish place (80 employees, single owner who started the company by himself) and the owner has gone to great lengths to keep me. If for some reason we really struggled and had to get rid of staff, myself and about 4-5 others would be the last ones off the ship, because we can all do multiple things and he can rely on them being done correctly and with the best interest of the company in mind.

Obviously that could all change but for now I'm one of the most reliable people he has and he prioritizes that over most anything else.

Yeah, that's the main thing I could see upending everything. When I first started, the company was owned by two brothers, one who started it (engineer) and then let his other brother (business) take over the business side. Then they started to hate each other, wouldn't even be in the same room together. Business wanted to sell, the other refused to. Engineering brother bought out the other one and is now sole owner, and the company is his baby. He's hired/promoted other people to handle the business side now and the company is run by him and a small inner circle of managers, me included.

She clarified that what she wants is for me to take three days off and travel each of those days to another (nearby) city to help.

Use up three of my holiday days.

Oh he's still a pain in the rear end, but it's more in a way where he says "yes" to every weird custom thing customers want to do, and then a few of us end up having to take a lot of time to figure out how to pull it off. He has every intention of helping and usually does, but he's also busy as hell. He wants to travel around the country actually doing the work like the dudes we pay $20/hr to, and doesn't have time for the "annoying poo poo" like doing reviews or running the day to day.

So yeah he let go, but only so he can just go and do whatever job he wants to do.
