Foot porn, specifically, if I'm remembering some of the director's commentary correctly.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I really cannot stress enough how good the director's commentary is, if only for the hilarity of how amateur this stuff still is. I rewatched the Captain Sunshine episode again with commentary and I had forgotten that when everyone shows up to Captain Sunshine's house the playback for them stops and they start making jokes about how they don't have any copies of their own show.

I'm prerty sure an earlier season they mention how they are watching it from a DVD they were given for selling a shitload of copies or whatever. Turns out those DVDs are not meant to be watched so the quality was garbage but they literally had no other copies to watch.

I think that's one of the reasons I love this show so much. It has such an amateur and labour of love feel to it even after all these years.

I know, but I feel like subscribing to the service says I'm okay with how they just gave a giant middle finger to a lot of creators. Buying the physical media feels like I'm putting money directly in the pockets of Publick/Hammer/Urbaniak/etc.

Yeah, one of its charms is that it's very clearly written and designed by two very idiosyncratic people with a certain outsider view of popular culture and media. You really are entering their mental space when you watch Venture bros. and it's catnip to me and my friends because we're sort of in the same age group, have a lot of the same points of reference, and are basically the weirdo target audience for it. The comicbook, music, old cartoon, 70 sci-fi, 1960s culture, and sideways historical references fall right in my wheelhouse. There's no writing team, just their voice and interests.

I've always wanted Venture Bros. to be more critically recognized (given the sheer auteurism of it), but at the same time it feels special to me in a way a lot of more popular animated comedy doesn't. And part of that is it isn't suitable for a mass audience or critical esteem. It's just its own weird, special thing for a certain kind of person. It's also very funny.

I have all the blu-rays and dvds and the Venture Bros. book. I regret never purchasing any of the tees. I always wanted a more robust action figure line, but that's money and space I don't have so probably better they never released much.

I don’t know that it isn’t suitable for a mass audience. Almost all of the references fly right past my girlfriend and she still finds it enjoyable for the characters and story. Another one of my friends enjoyed it in a similar way, though he’s gotten into more niche-y pop culture interests lately and finds it a lot funnier. I think when the show started airing it was a harder sell but I don’t think that’s the case anymore.

when the Alchemist says to Triana "I used to go to the Batcave when Nik Fiend was the doorman" you don't have to know exactly what he's talking about, it's clear he's an old guy trying to impress the young alt-chick with his old school cred and she just doesn't give a poo poo. but if you do recognize it it makes it that much funnier.

also, in the not too distant past i realized that in the scene where Monarch and Dr. Mrs. are disguising themselves as Beaver Inspectors, the Monarch just randomly tosses out a Cure song lyric. the first time i saw it it just whizzed past me.

You may be right (my wife enjoys it when she pops in), and I may be a little stuck in the past. It has been pretty well-rounded since season 3 and I may be backward projecting a little. I don't think would ever have a huge audience, but could probably have a much larger one if more people knew about it. The characters and situations are pretty universal in their way.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Yeah, the trick is Venture Bros is built around a core of extremely familiar and well-worn cliches- even if Johnny Quest isn't big anymore, the whole adventurer, action hero and supervillain archetypes the show revolves around are pretty much the core of mainstream pop culture now even moreso than before. It has defitely gotten very lucky in that regard, but maybe it's just recognising particular archetypes and themes that are just really popular, especially since a lot of the old stuff they reference is basically the older equivalents to the modern stuff. Like, the whole joke with Team Venture is that they're basically a cast you could drop in any action or sci-fi movie to play the token humans.

They can get away with so many obscure and nerdy references probably specifically because the rest of the show is all relatively mainstream pop culture especially nowadays. And especially since a lot of that has probably taken cues from Venture Bros at this point.

I probably don't get half the actual jokes in Venture Bros due to my music taste, lack of knowledge of superhero comics, and being born in 1988, but I still consider it one of the best shows ever aired. Animated or otherwise.

Starting a rewatch and while the pilot itself has serious rough edges it’s always pretty incredible how many cylinders the first episode is already firing on. The line reading of “this is serious” that Doc has when discovering his second kidney scar has lived rent free in my head for almost two decades.

My favourite moment in the first episode is when Brock is running down all the henchmen and you think the screen is tinted red in that one shot to represent his rage, and then the windscreen wipers go past.
