Played like 5 hours straight with a friend last night, it was a lot of fun. It's precisely what it says on the tin, Dead Island 2. I can see the combat getting repetitive, and Darktide/VT has spoiled us with what melee combat can be, but it's fun dismembering zombies.

The set pieces are great and running around L.A. is great.

Brigador. It's basically a love letter to the strike games, with a poo poo load of vehicles divided between mechs, tanks, and hovercraft. Banging soundtrack.

It is also goon made, but one of the devs (who has since been removed from the company I believe) got outed as being a huge transphobic POS, so keep that in mind if you care about stuff like that.

If you want more Stardew Valley, the next game to show them is My Time at Portia. You're basically playing as Robin in another town. Almost everything you get a quest to build shows up in town so there's a fantastic sense of progress.

Rune Factory 4 is also a very good game similar to Stardew Valley, but it is extremely anime.

Will check that out, thanks!

I'm not sure really what I want to play but I know that I definitely don't like precision aiming (without heavy auto-aim at least), or inventory management with a controller.

Maybe one of those Ubisoft-likes? Which of the recent ones have the least annoying story and lightest on poo poo like tailing/escort missions?
Or maybe one of the farming games, like Stardew Valley, if there happens to be one that doesn't make you do a ton of inventory management, like Stardew Valley does.

Might be a good time to check out some of the old Final Fantasy titles.

Spiritfarer is under the same broad "homsteady-type stuff and community management" umbrella as Stardew and Animal Crossing and it has zero inventory management. Your character has Sierra pockets and keeps everything with her at all times. Also has local (or Steam Remote Play) co-op, in case that matters.

Sable, maybe? Follows the general blueprint of open-world adventure games, but there's no combat, just vibes (and light platforming). It's pretty relaxing and it has a gorgeous art style. You only need to mess around with your inventory when you want to customize your outfit or vehicle, which is optional.

I'm looking for a game that has the grow crops -> sell -> improve farm loop of something like Stardew Valley but with more emphasis on building a farm and less on the RPG and storytelling. I know farming simulator exists but it's not really what I'm after. I also know about the classic Sim Farm which I really wish someone would do a modern take on.

Starbound is kinda like terraria but in space. But also they were super crappy to the folks working on it. Play "farworld pipneers" when it comes out instead.

Yeah sadly many of the folks who worked on Starbound (including some goons) are never going to see a fraction of a penny from your purchase.

The game also kinda falls apart about 10-15 hours in, it’s tragic.

Subnautica and Valheim are standout games in the genre. Valheim is balanced for multiplayer but I used the Valheim Plus mod for my single player profile. Has a bunch of features I didn’t use, just made the grind easier in the config file.

There’s also No Man’s Sky, it’s incredibly gorgeous and people seem to love or hate it with no in-between.

Extremely poor working conditions, abuse, bullying, exploitation of teenagers, and not paying developers to name a few!

The controversy is a few years old now but the polygon article from the time is still likely one of the best resources.

Almost no one has profit sharing anyways so the people who were exploited to work for minimal/no pay didn't even receive sales money.

Haven’t played NMS but Empyrion: Galactic Survival has this same concept but does it pretty well IMO. The difference I guess is that you can build a ship that functions as a mobile base.

What killed NMS for me after a very enjoyable 20 or so hours was that none of the various systems ever interact with or contribute to each other. Base building and its rewards only ever make you better at base building. Creating a cool fleet of spaceships only ever makes you better at building ever more spaceships. It's not one cohesive game, it's just six completely isolated grind treadmills that you can walk between

Obviously I can see exactly how this ended up being the case with all the updates over the years but it still all ends up v hollow

I played NMS for the first time only a few months ago and that was still the case.
It's just a big pile of shallow mechanics thrown together, not connected with each other in any meaningful way.

The most infuriating part of the game was how much it was constantly nagging me to do the base building bit, in a game supposedly about exploration. Incredibly schizophrenic game design right there.

There's been a pretty sizeable niche for relaxation games lately, though they tend to vary a lot in style and gameplay. Other than the already mentioned Dorfromantik, which is very good, there's the somewhat similar Islanders and the slightly similar Townscaper (though Townscaper is more of a creative tool than a game).
e: the recently released TerraScape seems to be a slightly more "gamified" take on the same concept, though I haven't had a good look at it yet.

A game that I spent dozens of hours on and that has puzzle and strategy-ish mechanics while not strictly counting as a 'relaxation game' is Urbek. It's a city builder with a deceptively simple look and that appears to have streamlined a lot of usual features (doing away with money, for example) but you actually need to place your buildings very carefully if you want to get the ball rolling. Once things start picking up I've found it really zen, though.

Speaking of zen, there's also Cloud Gardens, which I suppose shares some themes with Terra Nil.

For something that's just colorful and relaxing, you could try A Little To The Left or maybe Unpacking. Those are pretty short, unfortunately, but they're nice.

Personally I preferred Islanders to Dorfromantik. I LOVED Islanders. It's not hard to just get through the levels but actually trying to set high scores requires a decent amount of forethought and planning, and when you get a good run on a good island it can be really visually interesting. Maybe I'm bad at Dorfromantik but my towns never ended up looking as cool as the ones in the promo art.

The rivers aren't that bad because they at least connect to the tiles with larger bodies of water (lake/ocean/whatever) so if you have a stray river you can easily transform it into a small lagoon with a little island or whatever with just a couple of tiles.

Train tracks can eat my whole rear end, though.
