I had an escalde that would tow a 7500lb dump trailer full of logs without even feeling it, then the lifter banks went out at 150k and that was that. I got a new 4runner now that doesn't like 4k towing but man its 4wd is super fun at the bio dump. What I'm saying is dont buy a gm product.

Maybe get a truck and a cheap lovely van to carry the in-laws around in. Or the other way around works too I guess.

Putting both together gets you poo poo gas mileage all around. So when you're not towing you're still hauling a ton of SUV

Our other vehicle is a tacoma access cab. I haul a lot of fishing gear around 6 months out of the year and commute with it. She doesn’t want my stinky dirty stuff in her vehicle at all so we can’t share.
She doesn’t “work” so no commute and mostly is a shuttle for family and scouts. When she had a van she managed to get it stuck in a ditch during snow weather events so many times she doesn’t want one anymore. >.<
She never managed to do that with her Pilot and we’ve had equally bad storms since. So barring moving or better snow plowing van is out.

I’m digging nobody sticking up for GMC products. Personal antidote are always amusing. Most likely down to ford or Toyota.

For everything long haul freight, from ships to trains to pickups, there is one ranking for how green it is per cargo capacity

Nuclear > Fuel Cell > Diesel > Gas > Bunker

Good luck getting a fuel cell truck, or a nuclear container ship though.

But surely someone has modified their Duramax to roll maximum coal with bunker fuel.

That's the 10-speed trans, right? Or 8?

Edit: I've got 255k on a 95 suburban, it needed a fuel pump a couple years ago. Took about 3 hours in the driveway.

You would need fuel heaters and coils in your fuel tanks. Theres no way 24vdc can handle that, you would have to tow a trailer with the full unit or mount it in the bed.

You also forgot wind and solar.

You can't do wind, solar, or battery for long haul cargo. Ocean is too big. At least the non-tesla electric semis are targeting the niche they're good for - last mile delivery.

I do like the kite sail idea for cargo ships to reduce fuel use. And there's a part of me that's sad that fully wind-powered sea transport isn't viable at the scale we need because there's something really neat about sailing ships.

I've got about 260k on an '03 yukon xl which is exactly the same as a suburban. It has 1001 problems and hasn't run since last April.

I can't afford to fix it, nor can i sell it because getting it fixed seems a lot more likely than replacing it with the current used 4wd market.

If I was going to buy a 6 seater that could tow decently I'd probably look at a new pilot. I love my ridgeline and they're basically the same vehicle.

 the semis are basically useless and pepsi can only use the ones that work to move chips as the batteries can’t handle pulling sodas.

Haha I forgot you had mentioned your pilot.

It's a completely different transmission in the 23s but I also don't know what youre towing and how often, and you're probably at a higher elevation than I am.

My buddy has an Expedition and doesn't have any complaints. To me that's too loving big so our 6 seater is an explorer.

Since we bought the 19ft trailer we have managed one weekend trip a month to various state parks or the Olympics. Next summer we want to do a 2-3 week long road trip to Yellowstone or Yosemite. Our starting elevation isn’t particularly high but to escape the area we kinda have a few mountain ranges around us in Bremerton WA.

I looked up a bunch of stuff about the Manila Galleons when we were taking essentially the same route they would have been (Guam->Hi->southern NA), and you'd think a nuclear powered submarine would be way faster, and it is, but not by as much as you would think (less than twice as fast).

That was also the only time I had to make a trip that was constrained by fuel capacity (of our escort) and holy poo poo do surface ships suck fuel down at an unholy rate, even when they're slowed down to crippled submarine pace.

Lemniscate Blue posted:

They're the original nuclear(fusion)-powered ships, I think we're going to end up in a position where almost all sea-going cargo capacity is wind powered, if we end up getting serious about decarbonizing.

That’s a misleading statement, because a ship on bunker (not actually bunker, it’s IFO 380cst) still puts out less crap per ton miles that a gasoline car.

You probably could but it might not approach efficiency or feasibility. I know Maersk is looking into different types of wind power generation from sails to turbines. With the new IMO requirements coming in a lot of the old paradigm is going to shift, especially with speed restrictions.
