With X3, I did appreciate that they attempted some scaling with the major plotlines. The difficulty of Operation: Final Fury, for example, was based on your combat rank, so if you went for it early you could (with some luck) probably scrape through. Whereas if you were a really high rank, it'd be a lot harder. Of course, this being Egosoft, and a game where combat is only one part of the equation, you could also just start the plotline after you were stinking rich and had access to the best ships/weapons/etc - without having killed anyone - and breeze through the whole thing. Kinda gimmicky, but fun.

Breezing through is one thing, it still feels super weird that the (theoretical) last two DLCs for the game only added what were effectively tutorial quests, right down to the "here's a bit where we tell you how space suits work" Even for a new player it's gotta feel weird as hell getting tutorial prompts on the same mechanics in like 5 different spots as you go through the game

Is there like a third party website that goes "Oh, you're looking for somewhere to sell ore, look in X sector, there's often an ore refinery there"? I realise it probably changes from playthrough to playthrough, but I'm new enough that the map isn't much more than a bunch of hexagons. Never quite sure where to search for stations...

Upper right hand corner of the map screen has a search bar where you can type in wares, then if you have ware filtering on it'll show you a granular supply/demand for that ware depending on your zoom level. It's not the most intuitive thing, but it's useful enough for figuring out where to buy/sell things in a pinch.

Yeah I think a lot of it is just me getting used to the interface, AND the setting. Had this game years, but it never really clicked until I came back to it this time. Also figured out last night that when I get a mining ship automated, I should probably give it mining lasers, otherwise it just bobs around its home sector going "Hey, rocks!" Just bought a shark to use as a trader. 5360m/s travel and 35k cubic meter storage is pretty good. Bit expensive, but it doesn't need to be fully kitted for trading purposes. Edit: Terrible idea, it just turns way too slowly and takes way too long to orient before traveling. Back in the X3 days (and also in X4, to a lesser extent) I'd always try to handle plot-related combat on my own - preferring to use my fleets for station defence, etc. in the background. So as a result, I performed OFF with a Paranid Odysseus decked out for the occasion! I had heavy weapons at the front for station- and destroyer-obliterating, then those shockwave generator AoE weapons on the rear and side turrets, to wipe out the bulk of the enemy fighters in seconds. The scaling didn't help, because I did it pretty late in the game, but drat it was satisfying Doing stuff like that is always very tense and memorable - so I really hope they bring in a proper anti-kha'ak storyline! Having them be proper pests in X3 followed by you taking them out was always good fun

What's a faster way of earning faction standing? Doing a lot of small 50-100k credit missions or trading or something else? I've got 1 point left to 20 for boron and I'm just wandering around doing small missions and it's.... taking a while.

The small standing points you get from each of their transactions will slowly build it up. Alternatively/additionally, I'm pretty sure someone mentioned a while ago, that they went to a trading station and just bought+sold energy cells at the same place. Since you get standing points for each transaction, you slowly build it up by buying+selling 50 cells or whatever, over and over (I've never done it though, personally. I just have miners in each race's territory, to help slowly build relations)

To power level rep I find stacking a bunch of missions which your pilots can complete for you best, and while they do that camp out at a station and shoot any smugglers that appear or sit in a sector letting a patrol mission run. Pretty sure the missions with bigger payouts give more rep too. High payout trading missions are really good with the added rep for trading.

That's more for long-term benefits though, rather than boosting my standing immediately.

Nice! Speaking of easy missions I found something that I hope the devs never fix.. You know those war missions that sometimes have decent rewards? One of the recon chains has a submission for scanning a Xenon ship containing ore or silicon and I kept not being able to do that easily. Well turns out the text and actual requirements of that submission don't specify Xenon despite being a Xenon war mission and you can complete it by scanning any ship containing that resource.

I wish I was that lucky, I had to restart due to some mod issues 3-4 days ago and I've hardly seen any xenon. I've taken a boron start again, the last time I do it. My network is something silly like 1b now and I've built a single combat ship other than for personal use. Minor Xenon in Hatikva, a few small raids I've recently noticed in Getsu but that's it. Not even the Split are getting hit. I really want to ramp up the xenon attacks but I don't know what I can do to kick the hornets nest other than outright attacking them myself

There's a lack of a proper strategic level AI that reacts to threats and tasks faction assets to deal with them. I know there is something going on at a high level, but it's not that effective at tasking assets to deal with new problems. Though often factions run low on available ships to deal with all incursions, so you see a lone K dismantling a station, but not the ship graveyard of another K plus escort and multiple destroyers of the defenders.

Trade prices are a function of stock levels. But since everything feeds shipyards, you can just look at what the shipyards are buying. If they are stuck at buying at max price, that's a prime target.

Right click, check logical view I think it's called. You'll need to scan a bunch of modules first before you have access to the information. Something like 50% of modules scanned. Then you'll see everything the shipyard has in stock and can easily see what it's running low on. Also for ship building, go to buy ships then check the bottom right hand bit, should tell you what it's waiting on for your queued stuff

Yeah the entire economy feeds into ship building so having the shipyards and wharves scanned enough to see their supply levels is a very good way of knowing what an entire region needs.

You don't need to scan at all because a buy order with maxed out prices and huge volume tells you the same thing. Every ware in X4 has a minimum, maximum and average price. AI pricing scales exactly to how full storage is. If they're paying the maximum for something they need it badly.

i use the sector satellites mod pretty much always now, spending 100k on an advanced sat, you drop it in a zone, it persists and also drops a little probe on every station in the area that disappears after like 30 seconds, but grabs subscriptions to all the stations it hits, and then it adds new stations as they pop up in a zone.

Also, how can I tell what a mission requires in terms of delivered items once I’ve accepted it and flown away? I need to bring stuff to my little HQ but I forget what.

I was on vacation all last week and I finally got back into the X4 saddle. I now have an ice refinery and a hull parts plant running in rork's demise. In case it wasn't apparent, the boron are extremely water hungry. I've overbuilt the refinery for station building and eventual med supplies/bofu needs so I'm not selling faster than I'm building but it's still selling at like 1.5mil/hour which is pretty drat good imo and that's including alot of selling to myself. Hull parts are hullparts. They're always a decent seller. Now I have two of the three station building wares for boron stations automated. Not quite sure when I'll get around to claytronics, probably going to get habs/meds/food going now for my stations. Also boron stations are real cool looking.
