Lincoln instead declares war to bring the territories back under control and re-enslave the freed slaves and is very much a villain. The new bloc of southern states and its allies (we didn't have a lot of friends along our borders then) prevents the US from helping strangle socialist revolutions world-wide thereafter and becomes socialist itself, and our history is an alternate history within it and viewed very much as a dystopia that's comfort to reactionaries who didn't like how it wasn't white people running things on both sides. If the first bit seemed interesting, pick it up instead of reading the spoiler, it's a quick read.

It's basically 90's military technology plus spaceships vs everyone on all sides of WWII It's fun, but extremely horny.

Guns of the South has an incredibly normie 90's view of the Civil War where everyone North and South is morally the same just wearing different colored uniforms and Lee is the greatest and most principled man ever and yes that's all complete stupid rear end in a top hat bullshit but it was incredibly the style at the time Also I believe there is a sex scene between Lee and Mary Custis and okay on one hand Turtledove is a gross weirdo who has always put pointless weird sex scenes in every book he's ever written but on the other hand there's nothing wrong with two people in their mid-50's loving and having a mutual fun time

Guns of the South was written when South Africa was still under apartheid, and the thesis of the book is that even the Confederacy would have been horrified by it. Robert E. Lee reads some books on the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement and decides to get on the right side of history. At the time, it was meant as a critique of South Africa, but now to an American it reads more like apologetics for the Confederacy.
