Ska will forever be my guilty pleasure, and I'm not even that guilty about it.

Electroswing is the kind of music that should be relegated to video game soundtracks and nothing else. It's should be illegal to produce or purchase an album.

KC and the Sunshine Band falls under this category. The lead singer and face of the band was this white disco haired Donny Osmond/Greg Brady looking mother fucker so everyone wrote them off as disco but most of the band is black and their poo poo is funky as hell.

Also, someone else beat me to the punch mentioning Fishbone. Those dudes were wild and would mix ska, funk, metal, punk and R&B soul in some really cool ways. They never quite got their due IMO.

The funniest genre of music is patriotic military marches, because they always sound like circus music.

Each one of these was supposed to be a bold, stirring salute to patriotism, liberty, and the American* Way Of Life, and they all sound like music for clowns.

As a bit of a side note, Battle Hymn of the Republic / John Brown's Body (same tune, different lyrics) both have some pretty intense lyrics and can be pretty good if sung right. It's a fairly melodic song, but you can put a real gently caress you spin on it. Not the best example, but you get the idea;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_UpjvmwEVI

Problem is, most of the versions you'll hear follow the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version of singing it like it's a goddamned church song. Both versions are basically about curb stomping slave owners, stop singing it like you're the intermission for a Latin mass.

Fake edit:

If you push into early 20th century socialist/communist anthems you can find a lot of ones that toe the line between beer hall song and military march. Prime example:

Of course you can find the same thing from the right, but gently caress Nazis I'm not posting the Horst Wessel.

I really appreciate the Wasteland 3 soundtrack's habit of taking old hymns and ballads and putting a new spin on them for boss fights. Their version of Battle Hymn of the Republic hits pretty hard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi2TLXt3ulc

Their rendition of Power in the Union was pretty powerful as well, especially when the chorus kicks in with "We Have Power!"

Ugh. If they're going for ska, they should be emphasizing the offbeat more. It's there, but it's really subdued, and it's the sine qua non of ska.
