I'm just an hour in, but it plays like a combo of Pokemon and Persona. You collect monsters in a Pokemon style overworld with movement skills based on your captures, and your characters transform into them combat. The gimmick is your party members can Voltron their monsters based on how good their relationship is, making a hybrid monster with their combined moves and stats to brute-force hard fights. There's also an action point mechanic that encourages using buffs and switching between monsters to set up your stronger attacks.

It's pretty fun up front with upbeat music and a cutesy 2.5D pixel art style. Storywise you've been transported to another world, and you're channeling monsters through your off-brand Walkman after recording them in combat on cassette tapes.

Super early story spoiler: :siren: It might have an Inscryption schtick too. It's hard to say, but that's my kneejerk reaction from a deranged and polygonal enemy overlaying the screen with VHS effects.
Edit: I just noticed what I spoiler tagged is in the Steam trailer. It's probably not a big thing then.

Oh, this game is pretty cool. The gameplay is fun, it's turn based but you have to aim the ball manually for skillshots. It also does a good job with the NB main character; I really liked the writing. It's free on mobile with a Netflix subscription actually but it looks like the pc version is expanded.

I've played a bunch of the recent games, some standouts for me:

This game is actually super fun. Not incredibly complex but I kind of like it for that. The combat works really well and the pixel art, while not incredible by any means looks very nice.

I don't give a poo poo about League of Legends but this is a cool game.

No reviews yet, but it's a sequel to Teslagrad and a follow-up to World to the West, so I've got high hopes for this one.

This game also bangs, fun and satisfying puzzle platformer with all kinds of neat physics mechanics to use

This one has a really cool style, I love the retro aesthetic that it absolutely nails (even though the period of gaming referenced is way before my time). It's also pretty unique and the rescued guys' AI is fun to play around with. Not amazing or anything but a pretty cool experiment with a strong commitment to a certain style.

this game bucks the card battler trend by being focused on persistent deck design rather than building up from nothing each run, closer to the design of CCGs like yugioh or magic: the gathering. I also like the look of the grid based combat, it looks very Tangledeep despite being in a totally different genre

This was originally released on the Switch and slaps hard. Visuals and audio are super good and there’s voice acting as well. Every playable story is moderately short and has unique gimmicks.

Definitely big recommend, there’s also a preexisting Games thread for it.

Played this for about 4 hours and its great. I'd actually say its more Pokemon meets Crystal Project. Its really just fun to explore the world and find little secrets and jumping paths. You also unlock a bunch of Metroidvania style movement/manipulation powers.

So many games from my wishlist have come out in the past couple days it's breaking my brain and I can't think about trying to play them all. I'm especially curious about dungeon drafters impressions though.

One not mentioned (I don't think?) so far is Mail Time: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1607240/Mail_Time/

quote:

Mail Time is a relaxing, cottagecore adventure set in a peaceful forest, far, far away. It's your first day on the job as a newly minted Mail Scout. Equipped with a mushroom hat, a pack full of letters, and unbridled enthusiasm, it's time to deliver letters and packages across the Grumblewood Grove.

Their recipients eagerly await the sight of your mushroom hat, so don't tarry! Run, jump, glide, and make your way across the forest to deliver parcels and joy to the cute critters that inhabit these woods.

That's right. It's Mail Time!

Been playing a bit of Bramble, and I gotta say I love it so far. Incredible at evoking a sense of wonder, and mixing beauty and fun with violence and terror; just like old folk tales do. Plays almost exactly like Little Nightmares, but it's a very different game.

Also, The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a very interesting game. The story and name suggest it to be a sequel but it doesn't seem like it is (?). Looks amazing, has truly impressive environments, and the best part is the puzzles don't hold your hand and it has a cool lovecraftian mystery at its core. Great voice acting too. On the negative side, the combat leaves quite a lot to be desired, the game takes a long time to load (although I am playing it on an HDD), and the control scheme is a little strange and can't be rebound. Still, it's a cool game and you can tell a lot of work, care and skill has gone into its creation.

I put some hours into this today, game is really nifty and I really like how the deck building works

Snooze Cruise posted:

You have 5 rune slots. Your color runes let you play cards of that color. But some cards require more, so for example a blue 2 card needs 2 blue runes.

But the game also has clear runes that add passive effects, stuff like giving you more health and negating status effects. So you could build a rainbow deck, but then you are going to be stuck playing lower level cards of each color. Or if you want you can play a monotype deck and add in some clear runes in your left over slots.

It doesn't return much, I might have been thinking of the label, but I'm pretty sure I remember local gigs ~15-20 years ago with bands who described themselves as punkcore. I think it was meant to be a reaction to post-hardcore going all emo, when they wanted to be even more high energy punk trad.
