The thing is having heard Willis talk on the issues a few times now. She is no where near the capability of Ardern. Ardern was able to show a depth of knowledge in interviews and convey empathy with ease. Willis keeps being exposed as almost as shallow and empty as Luxon in each media appearance.

Ardern's success is at least in part because Little looked at the situation and acted in the parties interest over his own. Luxon isn't going to do that and rolling him would undo the immense amount of work they have put into the lie that they are now functional and the infighting is over.

If they win it will be in spite of him though. He was chosen to be the next Key and his greatest selling point so far is that he's better than Collins. Not exactly a high bar.

national is doing nowhere as bad as labour was before little quit, and voters would punish them for rolling a leader. it's not gonna happen.

it's pro-tenant in the sense that there will be more empty tenancies on the market at any given time.

Of the current MPs other than Chloe/James/Marama, Teanau Tuiono and JAG have been good performers. Ricardo has done good work in a really limited portfolio, given the pandemic. I think his experience is especially important in light of the anti-immigrant poo poo that bubbles away beneath the surface in parts of Labour.

Of the new names on the list: Lan Pham would fill Eugenie's shoes well. Hūhana Lyndon is also (apparently, I hadn't heard of her) really competent and would bring with her some good networks the Greens could use. Lawrence Xu-Nan and Kahurangi Carter are both really competent

Chaos vote: Francisco Hernandez. I'm going to rank him #1.

If anyone is interested RNZ mediawatch has a fairly good article on how quickly media have moved on from celebrating the law changes that allow kiwis to gain Australian citizenship to scaremongering about the possibility of an exodus.

Thanks NZ Media. This is because we haven't had to worry about talent migrating to Australia since 2001, right? Or are we more concerned about the slightest increase of pressure to compete with Australian wages and working conditions, you know, the ones above starvation level?

I mean the article points out that the country pretty much agrees with you on media.

RNZ posted:

New Zealanders are world-leaders in tuning out the news, with 69 percent of respondents saying they actively avoid it at least some of the time, and just 37 percent of us taking high interest in what’s being reported.

If the media didn't take the time to focus on how terrible this could be, people might see it as a win for Labour in an election year. My pitch: if there is a mass exodus to Australia it will solve our housing crisis!
