Yes, the stakes involved in self-driving cars and AI-authored jokes are essentially equivalent.

True, but also developing an AI that can write a passable script for a tv show that needs minimal editing is going to be much easier than developing an AI that can safely and reliably drive a car.

Technology doesn't progress at a consistent pace that you can just predict based on past developments. There's been huge developments in AI over the past two years thanks to advances in machine learning software, but without major breakthroughs, there's no guarantee we're gonna see the same rate of advancement in the next two years or two years after that.

We're not in Foundation/10,000 monkey times yet.

A writer on Twitter (sorry, I didn't save the link) retweeted that House of the Dragon is going to shoot because the scripts are "complete", and noted that this is what happened to Quantum of Solace: strike happened, shot the preliminary script, none of the customary script changes during filming. It's not regarded as a well-written Bond.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying this outcome will be good, nor will it eliminate all writing jobs. It will just eliminate many.

There will be still be prestige TV and high-quality TV. But the job that is “writer #15 on a show that people don’t necessarily watch for its high quality” won’t exist forever. Also, we can do our best to defend the dignity and well-being of the people who will lose these jobs without suggesting that the jobs themselves are necessary and inherently worthy of protection.

But if you're a TV producer and are willing to trade away quality for a lower price, you've already been able to do that for years.

Aspiring screenwriters that will work for basically nothing/"exposure" are already plentiful and will give you something at least as coherent as a fitted model output. If you're willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel, writing's already cheaper than the craft services table

You've seen the output of the public Chat GPT interface trained on the entire lovely internet and limited to 32K words of memory. Imagine a private LLM trained on only TV writing with enough memory for a whole episode, because that's the poo poo under NDAs being pitched to networks. Even if you need one or two writers to punch it up, you're knocking out at least three quarters of your labor costs. GPT has gone from nonexistent to coherent in four years, there's not much daylight between what the public version of 4 is doing and what the studios need it to do.

Yeah, I think we have gotten pretty desensitized to big tech and scientific claims of a revolution just around the corner and are pretty jaded to whatever the latest hyped new thing is, but it would be a mistake to underestimate what is coming in AI and how soon. Even just stopping our progress now but continuing to increase implementation and utilization of what we already have will have seismic effects on our current paradigm.

The scripts will be incoherent and have zero ability to consider continuity or even causality, but we just have to train the audiences to expect that.
